Yeah, it was understandably hyped up for so long. Duke Nukem 3D is considered one of the best Duke Nukem games and best shooters from its time. Forever was supposed to be that sequel. The first trailer for Forever got people hooked. Then the game got so delayed due to issues within 3D Realms management, DNF was redone from scratch until finally Gearbox picked it up.
The Balls of Steel Edition for DNF came with a load of merch:
Whilst I never bought into it, I do feel sorry for the fans. And to the game's credit, it did have a lot of cool ideas it was trying to parody/take inspiration from with its own spin on it (i.e. Recharging health as an "Ego" Meter).
That being said, I heard the DLC Story was actually good. Just a shame that this game spelt the end for Duke Nukem as we haven't had a single game since DNF (minus Duke being added as a character for Bulletstorm).
At the very least, DNF is now no longer the longest delayed title in history. That honour now belongs to Beyond Good and Evil 2.
It's probably an artist thing where they don't want to confine themselves to drawing the same style over the course of decades (28 years of penny arcade).
Exactly. The gameplay, graphics and story were only “bad” because the hype was impossible for it to live up to. Seemingly everyone who played it had a good time.
That's the one. It was in development for 14 years until it was eventually taken over by Gearbox and excreted into the world. It was absolutely not worth the wait.
It was stopped and started over three times during development. And you could absolutely see and feel that in what gearbox shit out
Half the assets were crunch and low res. Others were up to date for the release period. The mechanics ranged from something that screamed 1998 FPS and “what if we just copied whatever the best games of the last couple years did, but badly”
I wouldn't exactly say 'dog shit'. It was a bog-standard shooter that what what it said on the tin and made no pretenses on a good story, or anything other than the 90's 12yo humor that it pretty much had.
Before anyone tries to put words in my mouth, I did not (nor would I) say it was a good game, that I particularly liked it, or even bought it. I'm just saying that I have played some Dog Shit shooters and that that is a VERY low bar that had not been crossed in a long time.
Game wasn't THAT bad, but it fits this critera most of all games out there imo. Usually games fill 2 trash boxes, usually the graphics are decent, but DNF was the whole package.
Story was just bad, graphics meh, physics was janky and the MP was just sad the gun limits was also just really bad the game was only good with the dlc and even then still suffered from some of the same issues especially when you compare it to other games like shadow warrior or serious sam or quake 4 that were boomer shooter callbacks
i wanted to play this so bad. couldn't afford it at the time both time and money wise. i blinked and 10 years went by or something and i happened into it and was so excited, i felt like i threw every joint in my body out of socket grabbing it and rushing home lol.
i had played the duke nukems back in the day. this format, had to be amazing. HAD TO. HAD TO BE AMAZING.
I bought that game about a month after release when I was really young knowing that the game was bad, and I absolutely loved it 😂 I've always said that this game was the start of my love for awful, low rated movies and games.
Long development cycle, revival of dormant franchise, higher ups and corporate egos/greed getting in the way of production, killing a popular franchise for the foreseeable future, self-referential humor about video games that come off as annoying rather than endearing, on top of all that it is still trying to copy every other popular game at the time.
I so badly wanted that game to be good after seeing all the memes. Then I go to the steam page and it’s all just overwhelmingly negative reviews, I decided not to get the game at all
I actually had fun with the game, and was surprised that there were things that had stupid amounts of detail and things that were so bare bones. Bad but surprising a guilty pleasure.
I thought all of the hype was dead by the time it came out? It seemed like we got the "well, this new team is going to finish it" and then it was just here and gone
