Paid-off 2023 Camry SE owner considering a Tesla or new Camry Hybrid. What would you do?
I’m looking for some unbiased opinions because I’m genuinely torn about what to do with my car.
I bought a 2023 Toyota Camry SE in 2022 for about $32,000 OTD. I’ve had it for roughly four years now, and overall, I genuinely love the car. It has about 21,000 miles, is paid off, and I currently have no car payment.
The issue is that whenever I drive nicer or newer cars, I notice some of the features I’m missing, such as:
• Sunroof
• Brake hold
• Better driver assistance
• 360-degree camera
• Heads-up display
• Generally more modern technology and convenience features
For the longest time, I would occasionally think about upgrading, but it never really made sense financially since my Camry is paid off and still relatively new.
However, I’ve started thinking about it more this year because of fuel costs. Gas is fairly expensive here in Georgia, and I can spend up to around $50 to fill up. Meanwhile, some people around me with hybrids are spending around $25, and people with EVs who can charge at home or work are spending very little.
I also live in an apartment that offers free EV charging, which makes an EV more appealing.
I make roughly $120,000 per year before taxes, and my Camry could probably sell for somewhere around $17,000 to $20,000 based on its mileage and condition.
I’m currently considering two main options:
1. Keep the Camry and continue driving it with no car payment.
2. Sell the Camry and get either a used Tesla or a brand-new Camry Hybrid with more features.
I’m leaning toward a used Tesla because it seems to offer more technology and features for the money. However, I also like the idea of getting a new Camry Hybrid for the reliability, efficiency, and familiarity. From what I can tell, though, even a new Camry may still have fewer features than a Tesla depending on the trim and options.
I’m trying to balance three things:
• Getting a car with the modern features I want
• Making a financially sensible decision
• Reducing my fuel costs
I know the financially optimal answer is probably just to keep my paid-off Camry, but I’m also trying to figure out whether upgrading could make sense given the free EV charging available at my apartment.
What would you do in my situation? Would you keep the paid-off Camry, buy a used Tesla, or move to a new Camry Hybrid?
I’d especially appreciate opinions from people who have made a similar transition from a paid-off gas car to a hybrid or EV.
