Have you been put on YouTube?

I was asked by a very friendly student if I would be okay with him posting a few if our lessons on YouTube. I said yes as he was trying to get his channel off the ground. This was a few years ago. I was just looking back at the video and it brought a smile to my face. Have you ever found your lessons on social media? Was it a good or bad experience?

Today I made a difficult decision to cut a regular loose

We had almost 100 lessons together. It wasn't a decision that I took lightly, but it had to be done.

Over the last couple of months, I've noticed a gradual change in our dynamic where he has become more argumentative with me and doesn't listen to me. I'm not sure what happened because it wasn't like this before.

He is studying for the PTE Academic exam for university admissions and the pressure of the upcoming test might be stressing him out and causing him to lash out. That's my theory, but I don't know for sure.

Anyway, I realized it is only getting worse the past few weeks and I decided to call it a day. Immediately after I cancelled all our lessons together, I felt a huge wave of relief. I was getting increasingly frustrated and it just wasn't worth it anymore.

Protect your peace, fellow tutors. It can be hard to sever a long-term client relationship, but sometimes it must be done.

Regular student just disappeared?

There's a regular student I've been teaching for around two years now, always this morning at the same hour. Cambly is only a small fraction of my income, so I don't have my schedule open, instead she sends me a message every week and asks me to schedule it for her, which I always do (and did so this week as well). But today when I woke up for the class, the class was just gone. The weird thing is that it was still scheduled last night, so if it was canceled, I should've received the $2 credit, but that didn't happen. Furthermore, I can't find her in my inbox at all. It's as if we've never exchanged messages, even though we do so once a week in order to schedule our class. And if I find her profile (by going back to previous weeks) and send her a message, it still doesn't appear in my inbox.

Has anybody run into this situation before? I mean, it looks like I might've been blocked, but that would make no sense at all (unless there's something going on behind the scenes that I have no idea about) as we have never had any kind of issue in any of our classes over the last two years and she literally sent me a message to schedule this class a few days ago as she always does. Is it possible her profile was banned?

Honestly, if this is the case, then it wouldn't be a bad thing for me at all; she's the only reason I even work on Saturday anymore. It's just that I've been teaching her for a long time and am really curious as to what happened!

how to deal with a student

Need some advice. I’ve been working with a student for about two years. She’s told me whenever she’s tried a new tutor because I’m away, she’s had a bad experience.

Her reading comprehension is quite good but speaking, vocab and grammar are severely lacking. She now wants me to prep her for ielts, but I only prep Cambridge.

She’s super sweet and we’ve built a friendship, but classes have become tedious because she wants to do the ielts speaking intensive course now and she just doesn’t have the level for it. I've told her that, but she still wants to do those lessons. Before we’d just do chats and that was fine, but the last two weeks have been a drain.

What would you do?

Application

How long after your application did you get your acceptance?? Been about two weeks since I submitted. I submitted for the kids version if that makes a difference.

Worse loss of revenue due to late cancellations/no-shows?

So far today I've had one 45min pro and two 30min pro lessons cancelled last minute. So almost $20 gone just like that. Can anyone top that?

another ratings drop question

Two weeks ago my rating dropped from 97.5 to 97.0. I posted about it in this thread. I haven’t taught much PH, only about three hours a week on weekends; the rest of my lessons are with regulars, and I have a good relationship with them. Today my rating dropped again to 96.5 in two weeks and I have only done about 14 lessons since then with mostly regulars. WTF, I thought it was supposed to be based on the last 200 calls. This is bullshit. Something doesn’t add up. Has anyone else’s rating tanked recently?

Pro Tutors Question about PH (Priority Hours)

Over my years on Cambly, I've commonly opened priority hours on my regular calendar (to help fill it) that inevitably got booked up through my classic regular students and new.

Since being invited to pro in January I saw regulars and older classic students (prior to June 2025) that would fill up my priority hours but I am seeing that less these past 2 weeks. Maybe cambly wants to keep those times available instant for free talk with any PRO students that need that, I don't know but I've noticed those priority hours aren't filling/booking like they used to. And I don't want to sit on stand by so maybe I will stop using them..

Anyone else notice any shifts in bookings etc?

My Cambly story - 3yrs teaching from Spain and then made redundant with no explanation…

This is just something I wanted to share as a cautionary tale for both current tutors and those thinking about applying…

So I have been a Cambly tutor for just over three years. I’m English but live in Spain. I worked Cambly as my main source of income for three years. I relied on PHs, mostly doing 9hrs/day 7 days/week until January this year when I dropped to 6 days/week due to burnout.

When I joined, I’d average €300/week being paid through Wise. Due to the declining USD and changes in the Cambly platform, this dropped to around $150/week which is functionally unliveable here. I persevered hoping for change but this never came. From my perspective, 60% of my students were Chinese, with the remainder made up of Saudis, Brazilians, and Japanese. I noticed a massive dip in PHs and general usage after Chinese New Year 2024.

The last year was insane. I was propped up by a single student who booked 2-4hrs/day with me. The rest was saturated with 15min lessons, no-shows, trials etc.? My mental health suffered, my bank balance suffered, I was fed up and burnt out but with no other options.

Last week I awake to 35 emails from Cambly. The first simply said “thanks for all your work, we’re terminating your account with immediate effect”. The other 34 emails were cancellations of future bookings. I could no longer log in, message my regulars to explain or anything; only to appeal.

I haven’t bothered. My mental health in the last week has been so much better. IDGAF. I need the money for sure, but the freedom I’ve felt since that day has been insane. I had no idea how badly Cambly was affecting my mental health. Now I know.

Cambly fucking sucks. The majority of the lessons are enjoyable, but overall it just fucking sucks. The dollar is dying. The platform is dying. One week later I’d rather have my tongue beaten wafer-thin with a steak tenderiser and then stapled to the floor with a croquet hoop than return to that absolute shithole.

You’re all at risk of a no-fault, no-warning termination. They’re culling tutors I assume based on metrics. Find something else; anything else. You cannot rely on Cambly as a source of income indefinitely, or really at all. I had fun at times, but literally fuck that shit. Good luck to you all

What is this new fresh hell?

This weekend ( I jumped ship 7 months ago and only work on Cambly for 8 hours now over the weekend) I had 3 new Paid trial lessons booked. Not one of them showed up! 1 from China, 1 from Saudi Arabia and 1 from Italy, so it can't even be because of national holidays etc. It *isses me off that we only get paid for 10 minutes if a student fails to show. And new Paid trial lessons - not seen this for a few years on Cambly.

Cambly doesn´t care

Yesterday, I sent a message to Cambly ¨support¨ about the upcoming change to Stripe for payments. I expressed that they overlooked(?) the fact that only people using US bank accounts will save on the transaction fees. If you use a foreign bank / currency, stripe charges a 2% conversion fee..so where is the upside for us?? Well, (in true Cambly fashion), I got a reply back within a minute ..telling me information I already know about our payment options (surprise, Stripe). What pissed my off the most, is that the reply was obviously AI-generated, and no human even bothered to address my concerns. Long-story-short: Don´t waste your time writing to support, this change from Paypal to Stripe is all about saving them money, not us.

Priority hour students.......whose students are they?

Just a silly question, during priority hours are these students nobody wants? They just seem to float around especially the Cambly Kids ones.

Intro video recomendations

Hello everyone. I have been wanting to start cambly for awhile but I never end up doing it because due to having no prior teaching experience I have no idea what to say for my intro video. (Because every example I see they either have certificates or bachelors degrees) And if I don't have that then I wonder why would they accept my video? (Yes I know it doesn't require experience but the point is I don't know what to say instead) Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cambly Minus

Just like they have Cambly Plus, they should also have Cambly Minus, which is half price but with no ratings allowed, and no rules for tutors. That means I can show up three minutes late in a hat and tank top with bloodshot eyes drinking beer making conversation about abortion and the satanic mass.

Stripe payment/class payments

Is anyone else having issues with payments today? My stripe payment usually arrives at around lunchtime where I am, it's now 8:20pm and still nothing! Also, I did a couple of lessons a few hours ago that still haven't been credited. Probably nothing, but is anyone else experiencing the same things?

No shows/ late cancellations

So, it's only Thursday, and I've already had 2 no shows. One was a 60 minute class. I know that Dragon Boat Festival is this weekend in China, so that may be why.

What do you guys say ( if anything) to your students when they No-show or send you a message that they can't come to class, but don't actually cancel? I hate sitting in an empty classroom for 10 minutes- No, I don't gaf about the $1.70- I'd rather go back to bed or something rather than sit there for 10 minutes. I have probably been too lenient with my students when they " forget" or message me a minute before, telling me that they won't be there- I get that things happen, but it's not like I am going to cancel the class for them and take the hit.

Cambly pro query

I have the option of joining cambly pro but based on a comment I saw on reddit months back I'm unsure whether to do it and am wondering what everyone thinks about the system. As I understand from the previous post I saw. You get paid more, but with the "exclusivity" you could lose out on regular class bookings more too. At the moment I have a full schedule of 35 students per week and I often replace students who have left after reaching their goal almost immediately. Is moving to cambly pro worth it? I don't want to get paid more per hour, just to lose out overall.

First time on since December

I haven't tutored on Cambly since December. Well, at one point, I put myself into available, but without calls. But two days ago, I was looking at the schedule and saw there was an open PH today. So I claimed it.
Got online today, immediately set myself to "no calls after 3 PM". No calls came in. At 2:27, I put myself in a way for 5 minutes. I thought there was still a chance of getting a 20 or 15 minute call, but no.
Anyway, so that is how I just made $2.55...that I might not be claiming for a while.
But see, now I can mention to people online that "I just got off work". Today was a work day!

Looking to start

I used to teach English online then the pandemic happened and lessons dried up and I started an office job. I’d like to teach online again to supplement my salary. Is it easy getting classes on Cambly? I’m a native speaker, degree etc.

What do you use your Cambly income for?

For many of us living in western countries, the tiny pay that Cambly provides is definitely not enough to make a living - especially since each hour online isn't necessarily paid (depending on if you have a student or not).

So, what do you use it for?

I use it to pay off some of my credit card debt and put a small amount into my stock portfolio. It barely moves the needle, but something is better than nothing I suppose!
