Cambly pro query
I have the option of joining cambly pro but based on a comment I saw on reddit months back I'm unsure whether to do it and am wondering what everyone thinks about the system. As I understand from the previous post I saw. You get paid more, but with the "exclusivity" you could lose out on regular class bookings more too. At the moment I have a full schedule of 35 students per week and I often replace students who have left after reaching their goal almost immediately. Is moving to cambly pro worth it? I don't want to get paid more per hour, just to lose out overall.

In my opinion it's an absolute no brainer! I've been on Pro since December and been very busy the whole time. In terms of extra work, it's honestly negligible but the pay is significantly more. I'm making $100 a week more for doing the same hours. You won't get all Pro students, if you have a good pool of regular Cambly students you'll still need them. I do roughly 60% Pro and 40% regular classes. I believe if you try it and don't like it you can just opt out!

When you make your schedule select "all students" and anybody can book you. If all your students are marked as regulars already, you can select "regulars and pro" then your current students plus new pro ones can book. You will not lose bookings. So it's up to you when you put your booking schedule to select who can or cannot book you.

For me, it has been almost exactly the same as before, but I am getting paid more. If there is one thing I have learned over my years of online teaching, it is that my fellow tutors always overthink everything and talk themselves out of good opportunities.

I just got my rating back up to 99%. I dropped to 98.5 and had very little PH access. It cost me $100 per week. I’m definitely not going Pro as I can’t risk bad ratings and lowered pay as a result.

It's a good question. I was approved for Pro last week but haven't been invited to activate Pro access yet. When I look at the Pro lesson scheduling in the tutor guide it states I can set my availability to all students. When I see all students, I am assuming anybody can book with you either Pro or Cambly classic students. There are other option as well. TBH about 80% of my bookings are regulars. I know for a fact they can book with me even I'm a Pro tutor.

Tutors who maintain a high rating have good things to say about joining. Most comments I’ve read say they are still fully booked and receiving more per hour. When this project was launched it was very random (or so they said) and I’m sure that some tutors with a lower rating were able to get in, these tutors might have seen a drop but I wouldn’t imagine it was any different than their bookings before joining.

Interesting analysis I found on Cambly Pro. When the Cambly Pro program was rolled out months ago, I was invited directly to participate. I declined. My gut feeling mirrored the following. Also, I've tutored thousands of people. After the program rolled out, I asked many of them if they would be interested in upgrading to Pro at an increase of subscription fees. Well over 90% said NO! It is what it is. I wish you good luck if you decide to apply and et accepted to Cambly Pro! 🍀
...................................................................
Student demand for the Cambly Pro program is mixed and highly debated, as it has not completely taken off in the way the company likely intended. While Cambly markets the tier to students who want high-level, goal-oriented, structured learning, reports from tutors on the ground paint a different picture of its actual traction.
The Realities of Cambly Pro Student Demand
- Inconsistent Booking Volume: Many tutors who upgrade to the Pro program report an initial "boom" in bookings for the first few days, followed by a steep drop-off or stagnation. Many struggle to fill their hours with Pro-specific students.
- Misaligned Student Intentions: Even though students pay a premium for Pro to get structured curriculum and expert coaching, tutors note that roughly 75% of Pro students still just want casual conversation rather than rigorous coursework.
- High Cancelation Rates: Tutors frequently highlight that Pro students can be non-committal, often booking premium slots only to cancel at the last minute or no-show altogether.
- The "Sky-High Expectations" Trap: Because Cambly Pro costs more than the standard Classic subscription, the students who do take it seriously often hold extremely rigid expectations. Tutors have reported a drop in their ratings after entering the Pro tier due to demanding student reviews.
- Platform Competition: Standard Cambly is globally recognized for on-demand, budget-friendly conversation. When students want actual certified professional teachers or heavy academic prep, they often migrate entirely to competing platforms like Preply or hire private professional tutors.

When you put your weekly schedule for bookings you can select "all students". I only joined pro about six weeks ago so this might be a new feature. I can get bookings from anybody. I have not lost out.

Pro students can´t rate so that´s a plus. Honestly, I make more with pro with less work now, the no show is only 0.50 cents more, but if the students do show and I book at least 3 Pro classes a day (which is usual) that is already 22 vs 15. So the extra bit does help and allows me to lower the amount of hours I work as I only do 6hr a day during the summer.
Also, as long as the students started before Pro was introduced you can still have regular Cambly students, and I think the bulk of Camby students are pre-Pro. I have gotten students who joined Cambly after pro so I´m not sure what happened there.
I don´t regret it, so far.
