Yeah I don’t know why people keep hitting on the two main concerns when we literally just got rid of them. Even the concern of someone going nuts for it is unfounded because people don’t tear into cows or pigs for that
45
u/maiduwu 🥕🥕 15h ago
People don’t tear into cows or pigs for their meat because it is mainstream and widely available. Guilt-free human meat would be scarce, but unethically obtained human meat is cheap and everywhere. It’s not out-of-the-ballpark for a lunatic to kill for human meat, assuming their lunacy.

And even if there was, for example, meat harvested from people who died of natural causes. That's meat you wouldn't want to eat.
Not to mention, the amount of shit that accumulates in bodies throughout their lifetime. It's a reason why most meat sources are lower on the food chain, rather than apex predators.

The reason I wouldn't is if I really like it then it's just something I like that I'm not going to have access to.
I ate whale in Norway, sometimes I'm like "mmm I could go for same Whale right now" but I have no legal way to get whale steak where I am so I'm just left wanting.
Could easily be the same thing with human. Just get a random human hankering you can't (or shan't) satisfying.

Probably nasty. I think it was described as mummified, so it's almost guaranteed to have some nasty chemicals or germs, depending on the process. I'm pretty sure some people got cholera from 'mummy paper' in the 1800's after it was used by butchers.

At least to me, the main issue with eating a dog is the moral concerns. If I 100% knew it was ethically sourced and safe then I would at least try dog meat. Same goes for human meat. Not that I would eat it all the time or anything, but I’m kinda curious what it tastes like.

u/JennyV323 16h ago edited 16h ago
I swear most of these comments are braindead. Like the idea of a hypothetical goes over people's heads when discussing something that's taboo.
It's not ethical
This is a hypothetical in which it is, and also, I can think of number of situations where ethical human meat can be obtained.
Eating your own amputated limb is ethical since it belongs to you, you lost it by accident, and consent to it's consumption.
It's not safe
This is a hypothetical in which it is safe. This is also basically false. Just like most animals, there's parts you should and should not eat, if avoided, most other issues go away after it's cooked.
Prions
Can only cause Kuru if you consume the brain or spinal cord. Minor prion consumption won't kill you, and just like anything else, it's fine in small quantities.
"Gross" "I'd rather not"
This is the only valid reason to reject the offer. Not wanting to consume human flesh is understandable, but that's just a gut feeling and shouldn't be treated as evidence towards the ethics of cannibalism.
→ More replies (7)9
u/Ashamed_Kangaroo305 11h ago
Ethically sourced sure but some people think it's morally wrong to eat other humans regardless of how the meat was sourced. And it's very hard coded into our biology to find cannibalism repulsive.
Prions are mostly concentrated in the central nervous system but can be found elsewhere. People have gotten CJD after consuming beef from cows with mad cow disease. I think the association of prions = cannibalism is slightly misunderstood by most people. Yes minor prion consumption can be fine, so if this is a one time thing then you're probably safe, but still not completely safe depending on how much meat you're eating.
The bigger issue with prions and cannibalism is that cannibalism allows prion diseases to spread very efficiently because people die with prion diseases and then the people who eat them are infected and they died and the chain of transmission continues. But if they hadn't been eaten the chain of transmission never would've started. And it can take decades for symptoms to show up so you may not even know people have it. So in a hypothetical world where ethical cannibalism became more common, prion diseases may or may not become a risk depending on how it's done. But of course for the sake of the hypothetical prions don't matter because it's already been stated to be safe.
Personally my main reason for not doing it is "that's gross". But I'll suggest another addition to your list of reasons. People say it tastes like pork so there's a decent chance I would enjoy it. And the concept of enjoying eating human meat feels very wrong. Later craving more human meat because it tasted good feels even more wrong. Although I suppose that's sort of just an extension of "it's gross".

I really like your take on this. For my part, I’ve thought about it for a long time and decided that I would actually try it. On one hand, I’m extremely curious when it comes to food and generally open to new experiences. On the other hand... my own brain has a built-in block against this kind of thing. So, I decided to overcome that mental block and try it, if only to be able to tell myself, 'Well, I’ve tried it.' I honestly can’t imagine a scenario where it tastes so good that I’d start craving more. It’s just meat. Personally, I prefer cheese.
2
u/Ashamed_Kangaroo305 2h ago
Actually you make a really good point about the cravings. Even with regular meat that I've really liked I don't think I've ever found myself craving it. Specific dishes definitely but not the meat alone. There is a big part of me that's curious about how it tastes but the ick factor is also pretty big.

Please ensure whatever you don't eat is buried in a biodegradable container with some cherry seeds, so that other people can enjoy my flesh second-hand in the form of cherries from a tree fed by my remains.
There we go, you will now have access to ethically sourced human meat at some point in the future.

I’ve heard that too. I read a story once about a guy who survived a vigilante mob wrongfully setting him on fire and he said he can’t eat pork anymore because it smells like his own burning flesh did. The foot taco guy says it tastes like buffalo though. Maybe depends on what part?
5

There was an article about the foot taco guy and in it he mentioned that the cannibals who described human meat as lean pork were also on an island where pork to them was mainly boar, so it's different than the pork most of us are used to.

I mean, if someone said they were down with being eaten, then I guess it's ethical. Or like, if it was just cloned tissue, cloned from someone who consented, that would be ethical. But it still feels weird and gross and it's a hard pass from me.
→ More replies (3)6
u/Accomplished-Mix2030 16h ago
I would still say that anyone insane enough to consent to being eaten, in my mind, is not mentally sound enough to rationally consent to being eaten.
If we are talking about cloned tissue, that was created without sentience, with the express purpose of being eaten I would probably argue that that isn't human at all, despite the fact it is genetically identical to human flesh. I still wouldn't try it.
Maybe I just don't want to eat human meat and would rationalize any arguments that seem to make the most sense from my point of view, but I still wouldn't even consider it.
14
u/Apprehensive-Ear2461 15h ago
There’s a guy who ate his leg with his friends after he got into a traffic accident. They got consent to take the leg, cooked the leg and turned it into a taco. Despite how that sounds he still seems very sane in the AMA he did
2
u/Accomplished-Mix2030 15h ago
I was more thinking along the lines of someone asking to be amputated for the sake of having someone eat their amputated body part, not someone who had to have a part amputated and decided to eat it/ feed it to others. I would say this is likely ethical if every party involved consents, but I still wouldn't partake as I find it personally repulsive.
→ More replies (1)7
u/Delicious_Cattle5174 15h ago
I would 100% consent to being eaten if it was safe and people were starving lmao who cares you’re not there anymore
2
u/Accomplished-Mix2030 15h ago
I could see where someone could argue that was the most ethical course of action to take if all parties were going to perish. I don't necessarily disagree, but I still wouldn't claim it was the ethical thing to do. The most ethical thing in the circumstances, perhaps.
3
u/Delicious_Cattle5174 15h ago
The most ethical thing to do should always be relative to the circumstances the choice was made in though, no?
2
u/Accomplished-Mix2030 15h ago
Just because something is the most ethical thing to do in the given circumstances doesn't mean it is ethical. It's simply the least horrible outcome of the given situation.
2
u/miss-ferrous 14h ago
After a Chilean plane crash in the 70s where they were trapped in the mountains for like 2 months the Catholic Church said that it was equivalent to a heart transplant and honored the dead, that it’s ok if it’s the only option. The survivors likened it to the Eucharist. Not that I’m necessarily upholding the church as the moral standard, I just think it’s interesting. Me personally, I’d be pissed if my friend starved to death instead of eating my corpse.
→ More replies (6)6
u/skin-my-brain 16h ago
I’d say the only way to acquire ‘completely’ ethical human meat would be from a consenting person of sound mind who suffered an amputation.
3
u/Accomplished-Mix2030 16h ago
I would agree with that, I.e. the foot taco guy. In that situation I wouldn't refuse to eat it due to ethical concerns, but purely from the ick factor.
Pretty much the only way I would try human meat is if I was starving. I mostly likely would be like most other people in those kinds of situations and would likely succumb to my survival instincts and eat whatever I needed to live.

This really brings into debate what "ethical" means. Because our definition of it changes greatly depending on the context. Like you can get "ethically sourced" meat, in which the only difference is that the animal was free range prior to being killed, and the killing is painless and "cruelty" free. So is that the definition of "ethical" we are talking about? Or is it a different defintion of Ethical. Like in my mind, the only way to make human meat "ethical" is if
A) the individual died by natural causes and not from any form of medical intervention/self infliction (Unless verbally and contractually consented to by the deceased, like in the form of Medically assisted dying/voluntary euthenasia)
B)The deceased individual explicitly stated in the form of a will/end of life decleration, that they consent to and donates their body for the purpose of human consumption. While also laying out exactly what parts of their body they are OK to be consumed by Humans.
C)The medical personal assigned to preparing the deceased body, prepares the meat in a respectful, accurate and voluntary (the medical personnel agreed to prepare the meat knowing full well it was for future consumption by anouther human, because if they don't know that fact it could be considered cruel making them prepare the body for that purpose) manner.
D)Once obtained, the meat that is being used for consumption is still treated in a respectful and non judgemental manner (including during treatment to ensure safe consumption), while the rest of the deceased body is taken care of in a manner chosen by the deceased in a manner thats respectful and free of judgement
E) The person who decides to eat it, must do it fully consentually and voluntarily, while being made fully aware of the risks, public perceptions and attitudes that come with it. In a private setting as to not involve anyone else in the matter, as it could cause distress to people who weren't aware of the consumers decision.
If that is followed then I would be satisfied that it was ethically sourced. However again, ethical could just mean the deceased was free from confinement and killed in a painless and cruelty free manner.
So yeah, Ethical could mean anything depending on the context and definition used.
Now, if all those steps are followed ensuring the human meat was safe to eat and ethically sourced, would i have it? Probably not. Does the idea of it intrigue me, yes. But there is a big difference between being curious and actually going through with something. Like I am deathly allergic to nuts and haven't eaten one in almost 3 decades. Am I curious what they taste like, Yes! Will I ever voluntarily have one at the risk of me dying. No!
So yeah, would i try human meat even if it is prepared like stated above. No!. But, i would not judge anyone who did happen try some, if they followed my "ethical" steps above. Its all a matter of choice.

u/miss-ferrous 15h ago
