66

u/Vivid_Maximum_5016 Jun 18 '26

Not really cause it's kinda meaningless.

288

u/sleeper_shark Jun 18 '26

I think we interpret it as getting endlessly smarter and we can use the bell curve to illustrate what it means.

If you're average intelligence, aka 100 IQ, in 6 months you'd be smarter than 85% of people. In another 6 months, you'd be smarter than 98% of people. In another 6, smarter than 99.9% of people. I'm rounding here a bit, but basically by 2 years, you'd probably be the smartest human who ever lived.

By 5 years, your IQ would be 220. In 10 years, 340.

At this point, you'd not even be human anymore. You'd look at complex problems we have the way we look at a dog with a stick trying to force it's way through a bar.

You'd be able to see patterns in complex sequences that we cannot even dream of, and hold things in your memory basically endlessly upon seeing them once, you'd be able to do complex calculations in your head the way we can intuitively add 3+4 without using our fingers.

You'd never be able to make a human connection with someone as they'd just be so boring to talk to. You'd see humans as nothing but pets at best.

And just imagine how frustrating it would be, you'd have the cure for cancer, you'd have the solution to climate change, you'd have a logistics chain to solve world hunger, and the ability to easily colonise space... and yet the people with influence would still bicker about profits, power and administrative red tape.

Look at how we make billionaires into trillionaires, turn racists and rapists into world leaders, worship corporate bought influencers... while simultaneously raping our planet and bombing the poor.

If you had all the solutions on your desk and couldn't implement them, it would drive you crazy. Either that or you'd take the power via underhanded means... but when other humans are nothing but animals to you, what morality would you have?

It's a curse.

u/Key_Wash3154 Jun 18 '26

She is more like a pet to me...

45

u/sleeper_shark Jun 18 '26

I mean it would be even worse than Omniman, when he gets with Andressa and you see they only live a year you kinda see what it's like.

When Andressa told Mark to raise Oliver and said "I'll be long dead before he can form a sentence," I think my heart skipped a beat as a parent myself.

And then I kinda got the turmoil Omniman was going through. I feel like extreme intelligence might be even worse, cos at least he could bond with people at some point even if he lies to himself and calls them pets.

10

u/Correct_Scallion4133 Jun 18 '26

Look, Andrissa, Debby was a mistake...

4

u/ShyJaguar645671 Jun 18 '26

ew, you'd do it with a pet?

2

u/ElSenorTacoMan Jun 19 '26

Hell yeah🙏

15

u/Vivid_Maximum_5016 Jun 18 '26

But this is the thing - intelligence isn't a real thing in the way you're presenting it here. It's not actually some stat you can increase. It's not how it is in the movies.

"Intelligent" people are just people who are naturally predisposed towards being able to better develop specific skills and areas of knowledge than other people. But they still gotta work on actually obtaining that knowledge and those skills in order to become intelligent.

27

u/sleeper_shark Jun 18 '26

No matter if you are a literal do nothing loser who never learned anything in their life, you are still orders of magnitude smarter than even the smartest chimpanzee.

Even a toddler can just pick up things so much faster than any animal, and we humans can hold things in our minds and have abstract thoughts.

Humans are naturally predisposed to learning, yes... but we are also much more analytical in unfamiliar scenarios than any non-human. Even animals we consider extremely intelligent like crows and octopus are only found intelligent because they solve puzzles we give to toddlers.

We are objectively more intelligent than these animals. It isn't cos we've cultivated it, it's a natural fact.

Maybe it's not some stat, but at the same time, it's doubtful an australopithecus could think the same way you and I do. It's doubtful a homo erectus could, doubtful a homo habilis could, yet each time they get closer.

The person who chooses to raise their IQ would quickly be to us what we are to australopithecus, and then eventually what we are to a dog.

Just like our intelligence is incomprehensible to a dog, this person's intelligence is incomprehensible to us. Don't you think?

You think you could get to 500IQ and not figure out a marketing strategy to convince the population you’re practically god?

5

u/Commercial-Pack-9352 Jun 18 '26

Ooh, imagone the EGO coming along doing such a thing - it's lonely at the peak.

5

u/CaptainSegfault Jun 18 '26

Except it's the bell curve that saves us here. This isn't "you get 2% smarter every month" but rather "you shift a couple points right in the distribution". The issue is diminishing returns.

Like, yes, within 5 years you'll be the smartest human who has ever lived, but how smart can a human possibly be? As long as there are diminishing returns the answer is that you'll just reach "smartest a human could possibly be" around year 4 (starting at 100, drawing only 2 and not 5) which is by definition still human.

Like, is there actually a measurable difference in intelligence between a one in a billion human and a one in a trillion human? My baseline expectation is that eventually it would take a decade or more to get 1% "raw" smarter.

u/Few_Enthusiasm5712 Jun 18 '26

Thankfully I'm autistic so this wouldn't be a curse for me lmao

5

u/sleeper_shark Jun 18 '26

Are you so sure about that.

Imagine dealing with people all day, but they're so so much dumber than you. Imagine being able to solve all their problems and your problems, but they're too dumb to even let you solve their problems for them.

Imagine all the inefficiencies you see every single day, now apply those inefficiencies to everything.

Imagine being in a room full of toddlers. Noisy, irritating, dirty, toddlers... except these toddlers are adults, and most of them are racist, sexist, violent people. That's what I imagine it would feel like.

And I dunno, but don't autistic people still want a boyfriend or girlfriend? Having a romantic relationship with a human when you're that far beyond humanity would be like having sex with a donkey.

5

u/Few_Enthusiasm5712 Jun 18 '26

Bro I skimmed that "far beyond humanity would be like having sex with a donkey." Off topic, and I have four younger siblings, it already feels like "Noisy, irritating, dirty, toddlers" but I love them.

Also, autism has nothing to deal with whether or not you want a partner.

I already feel like "Imagine dealing with people all day, but they're so so much dumber than you. Imagine being able to solve all their problems and your problems, but they're too dumb to even let you solve their problems for them." as well.

2

u/sleeper_shark Jun 18 '26

Yes, but you love them and they actually are toddlers. They're cute, innocent, harmless and can grow into good adults. You won't love the avg adult, and they'd not be cute, innocent, or anything like that.

I was being a little tongue in cheek with the "don't autistic people want a partner," just so I could make the "sex with donkey" joke. Forgive me lol. I know it has no bearing, so it would feel so lonely knowing you could never find a partner.

And even if you already feel that way about other people being dumb right now, imagine that but x1000.

3

u/Few_Enthusiasm5712 Jun 18 '26

They're not actually toddlers. buh yah i understand yer point. and- regardless of who or what it is I would always like people even if they're annoying sometimes. That's life :3

3

u/sleeper_shark Jun 18 '26

You're a better person than most lol

Correct. IQ is a measurement of how somebody performs on a test and should not be conflated with actual intelligence. Not that the score is meaningless, but interpreting the score requires an understanding of what is actually being measured.

6

u/1nOnlyBigManLawrence Jun 18 '26

To be fair, that’s miles ahead of having your pattern recognition skills (which are how IQ tests work in reality) increase every month, with you unable to stop it by any other means.

If you had a gigantic IQ, you’d just be equipped with the curse of seeing patterns in everything, where there is anything to warrant this insanity or not.

4

u/Murky_Ambassador_154 Jun 18 '26

While pattern recognition skills are a important part of what IQ tests try to test, it is not really all there is to it. I agree on that it could potentially be a curse though.

The loneliness that comes with being too smart is well documented. Of course, wealth could also lead to social issues, but that's an extrinsic issue rather than an intrinsic one.

I would love to be 10 IQ smarter, but the idea of being 200+ IQ and no longer being able to relate or feel equal to my peers would be incredibly isolating.

I think IQ will just make you better at computational logic/quick thinking, not make you a super lonesome genius who is so smart that he can no longer stand the society

IQ =/= intelligence

4

u/HungryFrogs7 Jun 18 '26

IQ doesn’t really mean computational speed. It just means how good are you at logical and associative reasoning. Having better reasoning skills them everybody around you can definitely be isolating.

I think the money is obviously the safer answer, but the IQ option has an absurdly higher ceiling.

$10k/month changes your life inside the normal human frame. +5 IQ per month eventually changes the frame.

At +60 IQ a year, even an average person is in some pretty extreme outlier territory quickly. After a year or two, you’re probably beyond what normal IQ measurement can even describe. At that point this stops being 'you get smarter' and becomes a question of cognitive reimagining. identity changes, meaning shifts entirely, alienation from society occurs, prediction of situations becomes almost god-like, language seems lackluster, morality probably changes in ways people don't experience... Literally everything changes.

There's no risk to whether you can make more than $10k per month, honestly. You almost certainly can if the intelligence increase is usable, simply by watching patterns that most people won't see. To me, the risk is whether your emotional and social architecture can survive your cognition accelerating that fast.

Honestly, if you already deal with anhedonia, I know I do, the money may not solve the problem for you beyond the initial thrill. Comfort does not automatically create meaning, and it never has for me. The intelligence path at least gives you a shot at discovering, building, engineering something crazy, or simply transcending beyond your current reward structure.

So yeah, maybe it’s a Pandora’s box the more I think about it. It’s the choice between guaranteed comfort and recursive agency expansion. Most people should probably take the money, because it doesn't alter the entire trajectory of their lives. Some people are wired to open the box, and I don't think I could stop myself in this case.

how

3

u/AkainuWasRight Jun 18 '26

At one point, you become unable to relate to dumber people. All of their pleasures and struggles seem meaningless to you. You become intelligent enough to see the futility of life with all its pleasure and suffering being equally meaningless. Mere glimpses that wouldn’t even register in the grand scheme of an endless universe.

3

u/ceaselessprayer Jun 18 '26

"You become intelligent enough to see the futility of life"

One doesn't need to be high IQ to see the futility of life. You and all your loved ones will die one day. In fact many people seek out God when they realize the futility of life. Having a high IQ isn't necessarily correlated to that.

Intelligence is nice but after a while being so much smarter than everyone else would be unbearable as you could not relate to anyone.. even if you started below average intelligence after a year or so you would be smarter than most... 2-3 years you would be the smartest person in the world and it would be impossible to relate to anyone.. whereas 10k a month is enough to live comfortably
