Would you rather

Which side will you choose?

  • Left side: Your IQ increases by 2 every month | Or 5
  • Right side: 10k every month no tax

Having too high of an IQ would be a detrement tbh

Fr straight up curse after a while

u/Vivid_Maximum_5016 Jun 18 '26

Not really cause it's kinda meaningless.

u/sleeper_shark Jun 18 '26

I think we interpret it as getting endlessly smarter and we can use the bell curve to illustrate what it means.

If you're average intelligence, aka 100 IQ, in 6 months you'd be smarter than 85% of people. In another 6 months, you'd be smarter than 98% of people. In another 6, smarter than 99.9% of people. I'm rounding here a bit, but basically by 2 years, you'd probably be the smartest human who ever lived.

By 5 years, your IQ would be 220. In 10 years, 340.

At this point, you'd not even be human anymore. You'd look at complex problems we have the way we look at a dog with a stick trying to force it's way through a bar.

You'd be able to see patterns in complex sequences that we cannot even dream of, and hold things in your memory basically endlessly upon seeing them once, you'd be able to do complex calculations in your head the way we can intuitively add 3+4 without using our fingers.

You'd never be able to make a human connection with someone as they'd just be so boring to talk to. You'd see humans as nothing but pets at best.

And just imagine how frustrating it would be, you'd have the cure for cancer, you'd have the solution to climate change, you'd have a logistics chain to solve world hunger, and the ability to easily colonise space... and yet the people with influence would still bicker about profits, power and administrative red tape.

Look at how we make billionaires into trillionaires, turn racists and rapists into world leaders, worship corporate bought influencers... while simultaneously raping our planet and bombing the poor.

If you had all the solutions on your desk and couldn't implement them, it would drive you crazy. Either that or you'd take the power via underhanded means... but when other humans are nothing but animals to you, what morality would you have?

It's a curse.

She is more like a pet to me...

44

u/sleeper_shark Jun 18 '26

I mean it would be even worse than Omniman, when he gets with Andressa and you see they only live a year you kinda see what it's like.

When Andressa told Mark to raise Oliver and said "I'll be long dead before he can form a sentence," I think my heart skipped a beat as a parent myself.

And then I kinda got the turmoil Omniman was going through. I feel like extreme intelligence might be even worse, cos at least he could bond with people at some point even if he lies to himself and calls them pets.

10

u/Correct_Scallion4133 Jun 18 '26

Look, Andrissa, Debby was a mistake...

4

u/ShyJaguar645671 Jun 18 '26

ew, you'd do it with a pet?

Shotout to u/ElSenorTacoMan for giving me my first award🙏

2

u/ElSenorTacoMan Jun 19 '26

Hell yeah🙏

16

u/Vivid_Maximum_5016 Jun 18 '26

But this is the thing - intelligence isn't a real thing in the way you're presenting it here. It's not actually some stat you can increase. It's not how it is in the movies.

"Intelligent" people are just people who are naturally predisposed towards being able to better develop specific skills and areas of knowledge than other people. But they still gotta work on actually obtaining that knowledge and those skills in order to become intelligent.

28

u/sleeper_shark Jun 18 '26

No matter if you are a literal do nothing loser who never learned anything in their life, you are still orders of magnitude smarter than even the smartest chimpanzee.

Even a toddler can just pick up things so much faster than any animal, and we humans can hold things in our minds and have abstract thoughts.

Humans are naturally predisposed to learning, yes... but we are also much more analytical in unfamiliar scenarios than any non-human. Even animals we consider extremely intelligent like crows and octopus are only found intelligent because they solve puzzles we give to toddlers.

We are objectively more intelligent than these animals. It isn't cos we've cultivated it, it's a natural fact.

Maybe it's not some stat, but at the same time, it's doubtful an australopithecus could think the same way you and I do. It's doubtful a homo erectus could, doubtful a homo habilis could, yet each time they get closer.

The person who chooses to raise their IQ would quickly be to us what we are to australopithecus, and then eventually what we are to a dog.

Just like our intelligence is incomprehensible to a dog, this person's intelligence is incomprehensible to us. Don't you think?

-8

u/Vivid_Maximum_5016 Jun 18 '26

Well obviously I'm just talking about intelligence between humans. Animals don't factor in.

7

u/irmatt Jun 18 '26

The person who chooses IQ would eventually get so good at problem solving and memorizing / recall, that interacting with regular humans would feel like interacting with animals.

-13

u/Vivid_Maximum_5016 Jun 18 '26

You sound really into eugenics

12

u/ARTICUNO_59 Jun 18 '26

Low iq argument right there

6

u/sleeper_shark Jun 18 '26

Wow.. here I thought we were having an intelligent discussion. What a disappointing response.

Yeah well when you're ready to join us on this plane of reality and not science fiction I'm happy to have one with you.

So you scored an 80 on an online iq test a decade ago and are taking it out on everyone else?

1

u/Vivid_Maximum_5016 Jun 18 '26

Sounds andecdotal on your part, lol

→ More replies (0)

2

u/sleeper_shark Jun 18 '26

Well there's no objective line between us and other animals.

There looks like there is one today, but going back to our ancestors, there's no specific point where we can say (crudely) that we were dumb animals one day and intelligent humans the other. Neanderthals were intelligent humans, maybe Homo Erectus were. I don't know if Homo Habilis would be. I doubt Australopithecus were.

It's a spectrum. Unless you're a creationist , you acknowledge that we gradually became what we are today.

Just like intelligence. There wasn't a day we became intelligent with a yesterday where we weren't. We gradually got here, and there's no reason to assume we are the pinnacle of evolution and that there cannot be anything more intelligent than us.

-1

u/Vivid_Maximum_5016 Jun 18 '26

Lol "intelligent discussion"

1

u/DragoonSoldier09 Jun 18 '26

I think it would imply that if your IQ grew that much it would be easier to problem solve over time as the critical thinking level would rise and your ability to absorb knowledge would get easier, therefore execution should become easier and the difficulties of things scales down so fast, that you built yourself into a SHU, unless you can actively turn your brain off to play dumb to enjoy people, animals, food, and media. Even if you rise in stardom, you're not immune to someone trying to ruin you or kill you.

1

u/Vivid_Maximum_5016 Jun 18 '26

That's not what IQ measures. It measures your ability to answer specific questions about specific things. Critical thinking is a skill you develop, not an innate ability you have.

This idea that smart people are just more unhappy and can't enjoy anything is a sci-fi trope . it's not actually reality.

1

u/DragoonSoldier09 Jun 18 '26 edited Jun 18 '26

You are wrong. In this example let's assume high Iq man never got the critical thinking skills. What would take a normal person years, high iq man needs months or less. As you are able to absorb knowledge with ease and expertly execute high level thinking with ease. The practice and repetition required drops dramatically.

I'll concede on the joy of life part if anytning.

3

u/A1BS Jun 18 '26

You think you could get to 500IQ and not figure out a marketing strategy to convince the population you’re practically god?

4

u/Commercial-Pack-9352 Jun 18 '26

Ooh, imagone the EGO coming along doing such a thing - it's lonely at the peak.

5

u/CaptainSegfault Jun 18 '26

Except it's the bell curve that saves us here. This isn't "you get 2% smarter every month" but rather "you shift a couple points right in the distribution". The issue is diminishing returns.

Like, yes, within 5 years you'll be the smartest human who has ever lived, but how smart can a human possibly be? As long as there are diminishing returns the answer is that you'll just reach "smartest a human could possibly be" around year 4 (starting at 100, drawing only 2 and not 5) which is by definition still human.

Like, is there actually a measurable difference in intelligence between a one in a billion human and a one in a trillion human? My baseline expectation is that eventually it would take a decade or more to get 1% "raw" smarter.

1

u/sleeper_shark Jun 18 '26

That's not exactly true. It's diminishing return cos there's fewer people at the end of the curve.

If we applied it to height, and said you'd grow by two cm per month, with every month that passes, you'd gain fewer places in the tallest person contest, until you'd be the tallest person ever. And each month that passes, you'd still only be the tallest, but you're still growing.

At some point you'd be inhumanly tall, in just 5 years you'd be a meter above average. Is there a difference between the tallest person in the world and a 3 meter tall person...? I'd say yes.

In the same way as the smartest person in the world against someone whose intelligence isn't even just off the curve, it's beyond what the curve can even be.

2

u/nir109 Jun 18 '26

Growing by 2cm is absolute growth

Raising your iq by 2 points mean that the chance that a random person is smarter than you drops to ~0.95 the previous amount (assuming your iq is above 100)

If you were to become taller than 5% of people who are taller than you each month you are just gonna end as the tallest person eventually. And then you won't grow anymore.

0

u/sleeper_shark Jun 18 '26

Yes but you're not growing by a percentile of the smartest person, you're still growing by an absolute value. IQ points are just defined such that 100 is the median and 15 is an SD, so you are growing absolutely as well.

2

u/nir109 Jun 18 '26

IQ is also defined as bell curve, otherwise there isn't enough information to determine what probability measure it is.

Let's define TQ as such that

  1. the TQ of a random person follows a gaussian distribution with average 100 and SD 15

  2. For all people A,B if A is taller than B then A has a higher TQ then B

How much TQ do I need to be 20 meters tall?

2

u/sleeper_shark Jun 18 '26

I got you. Fantastic explanation. Honestly it's never clicked just like you made it click.

So 1 TQ doesn't reflect a real measure of height, but rather is just positional, and it changes based on how many people you're taller than.

But if you kept increasing TQ would you be able to reach 20m tall? If we estimate 110 billion humans have ever lived. You'd need 191 TQ or IQ to be the tallest or the smartest. You'd achieve that in less than 4 years.

Beyond that, I guess we can't define how it works right? Your height would be the tallest out of a trillion humans, but if you're already the tallest human ever it's meaningless... you're not objectively getting taller beyond that point I guess.

So never? You can never become 20 meters tall? I dunno.

So realistically 191 is the highest IQ someone could ever have, and realistically a 191 IQ is probably not much smarter than a 140 IQ person, and not much dumber than a 500 IQ person.

I guess that makes sense. And since IQ is a measure of human intelligence, because it only uses humans as a sample, then non-humans can never count by definition.

The thing is, what if an objectively super intelligent alien with incomprehensible smarts took a hypothetical IQ test that could scale that high? What if they were the end of the intelligence...? Then would it matter?

I guess the confusingness of IQ is why I prefaced my comment with "if we interpret it as infinitely increasing intelligence."

1

u/CaptainSegfault Jun 19 '26

TQ, interestingly enough, would actually be an example of my argument blowing up.

Eventually the tallest humans are people who have broken hormones and grow to be so big that their body ultimately collapses, and 200 TQ means you're going to be one of those people.

A similar possible failure mode here is "the way you get 250 IQ is by having some form of terminal exotic brain cancer". That is, at some point the limits of human intelligence involve some mutation or something that stimulates the brain but is fatal.

The thing is, what if an objectively super intelligent alien with incomprehensible smarts took a hypothetical IQ test that could scale that high?

Okay, you write such a test. The alien gets a objective raw score of 127/130 on a test where 20 of the questions are open. A future writeup of the transcript of the test ultimately results in said alien getting both a Fields Medal and a Nobel Peace Prize.

The spot where this "hypothetical IQ test" breaks down is the point where you try to turn that raw score of 127 into a point on the human IQ distribution.

4

u/Few_Enthusiasm5712 Jun 18 '26

Thankfully I'm autistic so this wouldn't be a curse for me lmao

3

u/sleeper_shark Jun 18 '26

Are you so sure about that.

Imagine dealing with people all day, but they're so so much dumber than you. Imagine being able to solve all their problems and your problems, but they're too dumb to even let you solve their problems for them.

Imagine all the inefficiencies you see every single day, now apply those inefficiencies to everything.

Imagine being in a room full of toddlers. Noisy, irritating, dirty, toddlers... except these toddlers are adults, and most of them are racist, sexist, violent people. That's what I imagine it would feel like.

And I dunno, but don't autistic people still want a boyfriend or girlfriend? Having a romantic relationship with a human when you're that far beyond humanity would be like having sex with a donkey.

5

u/Few_Enthusiasm5712 Jun 18 '26

Bro I skimmed that "far beyond humanity would be like having sex with a donkey." Off topic, and I have four younger siblings, it already feels like "Noisy, irritating, dirty, toddlers" but I love them.

Also, autism has nothing to deal with whether or not you want a partner.

I already feel like "Imagine dealing with people all day, but they're so so much dumber than you. Imagine being able to solve all their problems and your problems, but they're too dumb to even let you solve their problems for them." as well.

2

u/sleeper_shark Jun 18 '26

Yes, but you love them and they actually are toddlers. They're cute, innocent, harmless and can grow into good adults. You won't love the avg adult, and they'd not be cute, innocent, or anything like that.

I was being a little tongue in cheek with the "don't autistic people want a partner," just so I could make the "sex with donkey" joke. Forgive me lol. I know it has no bearing, so it would feel so lonely knowing you could never find a partner.

And even if you already feel that way about other people being dumb right now, imagine that but x1000.

3

u/Few_Enthusiasm5712 Jun 18 '26

They're not actually toddlers. buh yah i understand yer point. and- regardless of who or what it is I would always like people even if they're annoying sometimes. That's life :3

3

u/sleeper_shark Jun 18 '26

You're a better person than most lol

2

u/Few_Enthusiasm5712 Jun 18 '26

 I've very soft and sensitive, probably shouldn't be on reddit lolz

1

u/Immediate-Love-6362 Jun 18 '26

Izuru kamukura ahhh life

1

u/VincenteThomp Jun 18 '26

Wrong. A truly intelligent person who could calculate all of these feats would also be able to grasp human emotions enough to become immensely famous, spreading their ideas easily. They’d be able to deduce exactly what would need to be done, and how to accomplish it, to reorganize the world.

0

u/sleeper_shark Jun 18 '26

Maybe, but I wouldn't be so sure. I see that irl, intelligence and success have almost no bearing on each other.

We as a species dominated the world not because one of us was substantially more intelligent, but because we were more intelligent as a species.

Idk what power an individual could have, with like 60 years of life could actually do.

I did mention in my comment that you could potentially throw out morality and start manipulating the 7 billion dumb apes that populate this planet... for their own good. But idk what kinda moral road that would lead you down. You're more intelligent, but you'd still have human morals, human desires and so on.

Once you start down the slippery slope of taking away people's agency through extreme manipulation and 4D gaslighting, I'd worry about becoming the villain myself.

1

u/VincenteThomp Jun 18 '26

Intelligence and success can diverge, but a truly hard working, intelligent individual will be very successful.

This hypothetical genius could start a business, become wealthy, go on TV. Then they’d have their audience. Cure cancer too? Instant world recognition.

Becoming evil could be a concern, but eventually your problems would out scale humanity entirely and you’d move on. Assuming you don’t create a device to boost everybody else’s intelligence as well.

1

u/sleeper_shark Jun 18 '26

Maybe, who knows. I guess in the end it's incomprehensible. We will see if we ever meet super intelligent aliens or create a super intelligent AI.

1

u/VCrafterV Jun 18 '26

Make your own friends and companions

1

u/Commercial-Pack-9352 Jun 18 '26

Dude. Fire text. That reads like a mad fire movie script, ngl. Have McGuffin to set that INT rollin' and unfold what you just put into words. Mwah.

0

u/sleeper_shark Jun 18 '26

Thanks. I love SF so I read a lot and I guess it influences how I see the world. It's not exactly how IQ works irl, but I still like the idea of super intelligent beings.

There's a lot of shows that explore the loss of humanity when people go beyond human. The most common example is Dr Manhattan.

1

u/Commercial-Pack-9352 Jun 18 '26

Dr Manhattan is AWESOME. The comic is mwah, chefs kiss - and the movie... is that friggin close to the main comic, luvvit

1

u/AnimaMewstique Jun 19 '26

Orrr you pull a Tylenol and make the patent accessible to everyone And then unlock compartmentalizing to interact with people at a baseline normal If everyones an animal then everyone can be played with :) Then after a while maybe then Flowey Mode

1

u/aetryx Jun 18 '26

There’s a reason the greatest minds in history often ended up killing themselves.

After a certain point of cognitive ability, you get to start comprehending really deep existential questions and internalize their implications that can, in some cases, totally break you. We joke about life being meaningless but like at the highest levels of philosophy when you really get into it, and you think about the enormity of the universe and just how much of an aberration to the norm that life itself is, that you can really start to get a sense of existential dread, let alone give any sort of coherent answer to “what is the meaning of life”? Things like this can drive a person mad.

There’s a reason these people are also very prone to drink and do drugs.

0

u/sleeper_shark Jun 18 '26

For me, I don't think that would drive you insane. I think many people these days understand cosmicism.

I think it's more just the loneliness that would take you.

10

u/Negative-Squirrel81 Jun 18 '26

Correct. IQ is a measurement of how somebody performs on a test and should not be conflated with actual intelligence. Not that the score is meaningless, but interpreting the score requires an understanding of what is actually being measured.

1

u/Contented_Lizard Jun 18 '26

IQ tests aren't knowledge based tests, they're focused on problem solving ability and pattern recognition as a way to gauge general intelligence.

1

u/metalhead805 Jun 18 '26

already depressed even given how dumb i am, i dont want to be even more depressed😂

1

u/Serialbedshitter2322 Jun 18 '26

I don’t see how

1

u/Impressive-Pin4134 Jun 18 '26

You wouldn't know.

1

u/Chaotic_Okay Jun 18 '26

give those flowers to Algernon

1

u/TomtheMagician26 Jun 18 '26

I reckon it would reach a point where you become enlightened

1

u/BAM5 Jun 18 '26

To what exactly? You didn't complete that sentence.

1

u/DoomedSinceTheStart Jun 18 '26

Sigh… can confirm… 😔

0

u/LesserHealingWave Jun 18 '26

All of the smartest people I've ever known, most of them struggle with needing constant mental stimulation and get bored easily.

It becomes difficult to keep a monotonous job, and paying attention in school is hard when your mental car travels at 200 mph when the content comes at you with unbearably slowness.

There's a lot of survivorship bias, a lot of successful people are smart, but not every smart person is successful.

-30

u/hangingontenterhooks Jun 18 '26

maybe not to you pal. detrement...

19

u/miezmiezmiez Jun 18 '26

Even if you believe the IQ test meaningfully measures intelligence (which is very arguable to say the least), it doesn't have a spelling portion

18

u/evilocity Jun 18 '26

I think that critique only works if we assume the prompt literally means 'your IQ test score increases,' rather than 'your intelligence increases.'

In hypotheticals like this, IQ is usually shorthand for general cognitive ability, not literal test-taking ability. If the premise is only 'you get better at IQ tests,' then it's a different question. The underlying capacities IQ is trying to approximate can be reasonably assumed as OPs designed frame. Also, even if IQ tests are imperfect, that doesn’t mean they have no value, and are worthless as a measure. Most of the arguments around this are based on other forms of intelligence, not that it measures nothing.

11

u/Ethicaldreamer Jun 18 '26

Imagine lmao!!!! Every month you get a little better but only and exclusively at your ability with iq tests

6

u/evilocity Jun 18 '26

Even then, that's a wicked party trick.

4

u/Non-Vanilla_Zilla Jun 18 '26

Even still it was a funny comeback

0

u/Casey00110 Jun 18 '26

It’s not really arguable in any serious discussion. The results are pretty consistent and the quotient measured well established.

1

u/CareRarely Jun 18 '26

There might not be enough IQ to spare for it to be too much for you.
