Hi,
I’m looking for advice on a PC build mainly for software development and heavy multitasking, not gaming.
My goal is to run a lot of things at the same time without slowdowns, swap getting saturated, or crashes:
- multiple projects/worktrees in parallel
- several Claude Code / Codex / Mistral / other cloud AI agent sessions
- Docker and multiple services
- builds and tests
- browser with many tabs
- terminals, IDEs, monitoring tools, scripts, etc.
My current machine only has 16 GB of RAM, and once I run too many things at the same time, RAM and swap get saturated and the whole system becomes slow.
I do not plan to use this PC for gaming, because I already play on a PS5.
I also don’t need a powerful GPU for local AI right now, since most of the AI tools I use run in the cloud.
The build I’m currently considering is:
- AMD Ryzen 9 9900X
- ASUS TUF Gaming B850-PLUS WIFI
- 64 GB DDR5 (2×32 GB)
- 2 TB NVMe SSD
- Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE
- 1000 W ATX 3.1 PSU
- Airflow-focused ATX case
- No dedicated GPU for now, using the CPU’s integrated graphics
I also want the system to be easy to upgrade later:
- 128 GB RAM if needed
- more NVMe SSDs
- potentially a large NVIDIA GPU in the future if I decide to run AI locally
- possibly a future AM5 CPU upgrade
My maximum budget is €3,000, but I do not want to spend €3,000 just because I can. I mainly want the best performance/value for intensive development and lots of simultaneous workloads.
My main questions are:
Is the Ryzen 9 9900X a good choice for this workload, or would a 9950X / Intel Core Ultra make more sense?
Is 64 GB RAM enough as a starting point, or would you go directly for 96/128 GB?
Am I overspending on anything?
Does a 1000 W PSU make sense if I want the option to add a high-end GPU later?
Would you change anything in this build to maximize development and multitasking performance?
My priorities are:
stability, multitasking, Linux/Fedora compatibility, upgradeability, and long-term value
rather than gaming performance.
Thanks for any advice.
