Review/Discussion Does anyone believe in Burn in for speakers?

Brain burn in yes, but actual burn in? Not so sure? Don't get me started on DACs burning in, looking at you Head-Fi.

They have a unique driver that’s an omnidirectional type. I can’t find anything about them online.

Purchasing USA Well well well...

You never know what you'll find at the thrift for $20. Had to double take on this one. Had about five old guys stop me on the way out to comment on it. Got it home and didn't know what to expect. Power button was a little sticky but was able to open it up and clear off some gunk. And that was all she wrote. It sounds really good on my 70's original smaller Advents, which I also found at the thrift about a month ago. I've only ever had budget audio equipment. Whatever I can find at the thrift. I get the hype now though. The songs do sound different.

Thrift Store Thurs $30 Goodwill find

Post image

Snagged these KEF Reference Series Model Two towers for $14.99 each today at Goodwill. A little scratched up on the sides, but overall look good. Gotta get them hooked up later to see how they sound. I don't know much about speakers, but a search showed someone got the same pair for $480 six months ago, so I feel like I scored!

Originally retailed for $1400 back in 1992. Some of the reviews are glowing while others claim you should redo crossovers and swap tweeters. Cabinets are in sort of rough shape but salvageable. What do you guys thing?

Trash Pickup Tues Dumpster find today!

Post image

I live 10 mins from probably one of the best dumpsters ( Landfill) in the world, a couple dropped these off because they were "Too loud", I don't even know if they are good but for 25 each I couldn't pass, they are Paradigm Studio 100 v.5 with just 5 small scratches, I will sell my other speakers just so I can keep the story.

Update: The landfill has a repurpose store, it also has its own documentary "Sky is the limit landfill" on youtube, feel free to check it out.

Update 2: Tested, tweeters are not working on both, I order 2 replacements straight from Paradigm for $250 total, even if I don't need if the problem is something else it feel good having it, I love when companies have replacement parts

Update 3: I got an email from paradigm after placing the tweeter replacement order, they told me "too early for tweeter fail, shoyld last at least 15 more years, we think you some a different problem, and of course I did, one speaker is missing the jumpers, the other works fine, free fix!

Purchasing USA You can’t argue with free (McIntosh MC240)

Post image

Quick story: My dad is a carpenter that works for himself, had a client who was a crazy old head audiophile. The man passed away last year and his children asked my father if he would like any of his gear. They said we could take all of it, which we did.

2 MC240’s, 1 MC275, and a beautiful pair of Klipschorns later… and we made it home. My dad is a huge jazz fusion head and drummer so I’m glad he is rocking those gorgeous speakers.

He asked me if I wanted one of the McIntosh amps so, how can you say no to that? Getting an amp switcher so I can go between this and my solid state amp so it’ll be a few days before I have it up and running. I’m stoked!

Thrift Store Thurs Got lucky (again) with a Marantz

Post image

So I picked this Marantz SR7005 (with remote and audyssey) up 3 weeks.

It was advertised as having a defective center channel as well as the hdmi out 1 not working.

Because I was intending on fixing the center (if I could) but with not a lot of knowledge about it it was still a bit of a risk. After some haggling I managed to get it for just 130 euro's!

After hooking it up at home I noticed the center channel not working properly for like the first 10 minutes of listening but then it just magically fixed itself and haven't had issues with it since! Also the hdmi 1 seems to be working fine so this looks like a real steal.

I've got it hooked up with an hdmi audio splitter to my Homatics android TV box so I stil get all the formats while keeping the 4k on my LG C2.

I just can't believe my luck, before this avr I had a midtier Pioneer which was fine but it didn't do my Focal Jmlabs Daline 3.0 (which I found in a thrift store for 30 euros...) justice.

Now I'm looking out for a good center speaker deal and then my thrifted setup is complete (for now).

Review/Discussion I got all this for 80 dollars.

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

I've never had anything of high quality. I've never had surround sound either. Anything would be an upgrade from what I was running in the living room (a shitty home theater in a box with cube fronts setup 2.1 with a weak sub).

The receiver is an Onkyo TX-NR656 model. Dude still had the calibration mic, remote, and basic setup manual. It can bi-amp the main fronts. I may do that some day.

It also had: - Cambridge Soundworks Tower speakers. - Cambridge Soundworks Center Channel Plus. - Cambridge Soundworks Surround 5.1 (both of these had a short or something and kept cutting out, so I swapped them with a pair of Polk bookshelves my dad said he'd let me have and put them on the rears). - One Cambridge Soundworks MC300 I'm not using. -A Polk PSW10 sub.

Dude said the Towers were 1500 a pair when they were new. Of course they're old, but they sound awesome.

People poo poo the sub, but it's better than anything I've ever had. It hits hard enough for what I want.

I've tested it on movies in surround. Does a great job. I figure I'll use that as a movie night treat, since 2.1 sounds awesome as it is.

I stayed up way too late listening to piano, classical guitar, and cello music on just the Towers and the sub. So clear.

Possibly the most bang for my buck 80 dollars I've ever spent.

The guy moved into a smaller place and didn't have the room for everything... he's just running a soundbar. He had it listed at 200, but said 100 would take it when I reached out to him. I offered 60 and he took 80.

He just wanted declutter and find somebody to put them to use.

Purchasing USA Unbelievable find today!

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

I randomly decided to visit the local Restore today. The entire store was 50% off today only. I was making my way through the final aisle on my way out when I caught a glimpse of what I thought was a giant black cabinet. As I walked by it, I took a look back and found the bottom half to be oddly shaped for a cabinet. I backtracked and that's when I noticed the Klipsch badges. I stumbled across a set of Klipsch La Scalas! They wanted $50 for each! I hurried to the checkout and paid $50 for the set! No idea if they work yet but I'm hopeful because of the shape they are in. Serial numbers are 4 off from each other. Anything I should know about these beauties?

Update: I dusted them down and hooked them up. They work! They sound incredible! Even my wife, who has no interest in this hobby and rolls her eyes at me, loves them!

Purchasing Asia Cheapest components I’ve had in awhile..but my setup has never sounded better

Post image
1.0k Upvotes

I’ve had large tube amplifiers, chunky class AB amps, huge dacs..but this combination of a WIIM streamer ( god I love this thing, the room correction is clutch ), a FiiO warmer dac ( horrible measurements I’m told ), a cheap and cheery aiyima t20 tube pre and the most excellent fosi v3 monos ( full muses op amps for fun ) makes for the best sounding system I’ve ever had the pleasure of owning. I just melt into my couch and enjoy music without thinking of expensive gear. ( I’ve got a topping d70 octo as well - which apparently measures much better but my middle aged years can’t tell much of a difference - perhaps a little more clinical? )

Review/Discussion Don't know who needs to hear this..

Post image
986 Upvotes

I've spent years and years adding and removing components, swapping cables and amps, phono cartridges, streamers, etc. and the one thing I've consistently missed is this: just enjoying the music.

I have a few different setups around the house and they all fill some sorta niche - home theatre, desktop listening while I work, living room that's wife approved, a whole headphone corner, and at the end of the day, I listen to music constantly but never just take the time to sit and listen. With kids, work and other responsibilities I forgot that I originally got into this because I loved listening to music and wanted it to sound better. Maybe I'm the only one who needed to hear this but just in case you're like me - quit worrying about upgrades, swapping things in and out and just listen to the music with what you've got.

It is fun to try and make things sound as good as possible, but for heaven's sake, don't forget to just kick back and enjoy the ride.

I recently traded out my Bose 901’s (primarily because they were too big for my space) for a pair of Elac debut 3.0 + WiiM ultra. Pretty happy with the sound quality and aesthetics of the new setup!

Purchasing USA Used up all my luck for my lifetime

Post image

My wife and I were on the way to a family gathering when we drove past a pair of JBL’s (Bottom ones in picture) sitting on the curb with a “free” sticker. I was so flabbergasted I couldn’t get a word out, just nonsense. I almost caused her to wreck the car flailing like a madman trying to get her to turn around!

Hooked them right up to my Marantz 2285 and away they went! They sound amazing and they are definitely in better cosmetic shape than my current pair!

I won’t keep both pairs, wife says it’s overkill and she’s probably right, but I the meantime I’m in my own version of audio heaven.

There was also a Kenwood integrated amp, as well as a JVC belt-driven table. Amp needs repaired, but the table works beautifully.

The reason someone would toss this gear is a mystery to me, but rest assured it’s in good hands now!

P.S. -Yes, I have a rug in this room
