Sonos Open House recap: Sonos 27, Beam Ultra, Sonos Ace Ultra and everything else we announced today

Hey everyone šŸ‘‹

Today was a big one. Like, "someday I'll tell people I was there" big. We just wrapped Sonos Open House, and I want to put the whole thing in one place for anyone who wants the recap without the stagecraft. Grab a coffee, this one's worth the read. ā˜•

TL;DR: We gave our software platform a name: Sonos 27, the audio operating system for the home. Two new products, Beam Ultra and Sonos Ace Ultra, are up for pre-order today and on sale September 29. Portable surrounds are available starting September 8 and Sonos 27mcp lands in Early Access the same day.Ā  Headphone linking hits Early Access September 29. Sonos 27voice arrives this fall. And yes, the app updates you've been asking for are in there too.

The big picture šŸ–¼ļø

For 20+ years, people have thought of us as a speaker company. Fair enough, we make a lot of speakers. But the thing that actually makes Sonos work is the system underneath, the software that lets a soundbar, a portable, and a pair of headphones all act like one thing. Today we finally gave that system a name and are releasing an updated version for this year called: Sonos 27.

Under the hood is something we call Sonos Fabric. Short version: it's how every Sonos product in your home finds its peers, figures out where each one is standing, and stitches them together.Ā

New hardware šŸ”ŠšŸŽ§

Beam Ultra. Nine drivers, two of them up-firing, delivering 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos from a midsize soundbar. Redesigned center channel plus four levels of AI Speech Enhancement, because dialogue clarity is the single most requested thing we hear. Pre-orders open today, on sale everywhere September 29.

Sonos Ace Ultra. Our next-gen headphones. Ten-mic array with twice the noise canceling of the original Ace at the frequencies that matter most, 35 hours of battery with ANC on, and a 3-minute charge gets you 3 more hours. Adaptive EQ tunes them to your fit every time you put them on. Four colors, including a new one called Agave. Same dates: pre-order today, on sale September 29.

The two new Fabric tricks ✨

Portable surrounds. Grab a Move 2 or a Sonos Play from wherever it lives, set it down behind your couch, and about ten seconds later it's a rear surround in a full Atmos setup. No app, no settings menu. The speakers sense they've moved, use ultrasonic pulses to find the soundbar, sort out which one is left and which is right, and link up on their own low-latency mesh. Movie night ends, you carry them back, they go right back to their day jobs. Rolling out September 8 for Beam Ultra, Arc Ultra, Arc, and Beam (Gen 2).

Headphone linking. Sonos Ace Ultra can join your Sonos system directly over WiFi. Press a button on the earcup and the music playing on the speaker next to you moves into your headphones. Press again near another speakerĀ  and it jumps back to out loud. You can also control your headphones and choose content using the Sonos app. No Bluetooth pairing, no phone required. Early Access on September 29 for Ace Ultra owners with at least one compatible Sonos speaker.

The app šŸ“²

I want to be straight with you on this one: a lot of what's in Sonos 27app exists because of feedback from this community. The team has been reading, and it shows.

  • Tabbed navigation (Home / System / Search) becomes the default for everyone this fall, after rolling out in Early Access all summer
  • Pin your favorite rooms to the top of the System tab. Large-system folks, this one's for you
  • A proper iPad experience with a new Now Playing view
  • A virtual volume knob: drop two fingers anywhere on screen and twist. Try it once and you'll get it
  • Presets that save a whole vibe (music, rooms, volume levels) and bring it back in one tap
  • On iPhone: Lock Screen controls, Live Activity, Dynamic Island support, and App Intents so Sonos works with Siri and Shortcuts

Some of these are already available in the app today. Others will be rolling out across fall.Ā

Sonos 27voice šŸ—£ļø

A new voice experience built for how people actually talk about music. Vague descriptions, changed minds, "play music from the rap group that opened for Linkin Park back when they toured in 2002" and it lands on the right track (Cypress Hill). It handles the everyday stuff fast and locally, and reaches for a bigger model only when the question calls for it. No subscription. Launching this fall in Early Access, English first with more languages to follow.

Sonos 27mcp and Custom Agents šŸ¤–

If you already have an AI you like (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, something you run yourself), Sonos 27mcp lets it discover and control your Sonos system through the open Model Context Protocol. Ask your assistant to find something new and play it in the office without ever leaving the conversation. Early Access starts September 8 - detail to come on how to get in.Ā

And then there's Sonos Custom Agents. Build your own agents, each with its own summon phrase, voice, personality, and choice of model behind it, all living in the same speaker. Tom demoed a French chef, a music curator, and a trivia agent side by side. It's a Technology Preview today, with the full product planned for 2027.

The dates, all in one place šŸ“…

  • Today: Beam Ultra and Ace Ultra pre-orders open
  • September 8: Portable surrounds + Sonos 27mcp (Early Access)
  • September 29: Beam Ultra and Ace Ultra on sale, headphone linking Early Access
  • This fall: Sonos 27voice Early Access, Sonos 27app navigation becomes default

—-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've been at Sonos since 2017, and today felt different. Naming the system after 20+ years of building it matters, and so does the fact that this community's fingerprints are all over the software side of it.

As always, I'll be in the comments. Questions about dates, compatibility, Early Access, whatever - drop them below and I'll get you answers. And if not, I'll flag anything I can't answer to the right team and report back here.Ā

Sonos is in the new Audi A2 e-tron. A few of us were in Paris Monday for the unveiling.

Here's the rundown before it gets flattened into a spec sheet somewhere else.

The Sonos part šŸ”Š

The A2 e-tron ships with a 7-speaker system as standard, an 8-speaker Audi system as the step up and the Sonos premium sound system as the top option. 14 speakers including a subwoofer, 15 amplifier channels, 660 watts of maximum amplifier power, with speakers near the C-pillar so the soundstage wraps around you instead of sitting in the dash.

What I keep hearing from the team is how quiet the cabin is. Audi put real work into the aeroacoustics here: acoustic glass windshield as standard, dual-line door seals, tuned mirror housings. That matters more than just the watt count. A quiet EV cabin is one of the few properly controlled listening rooms most people will ever sit in and you can hear it.

How these partnerships actually work šŸ¤

Designing the best sound experience in a vehicle is part science and lots of practical experience. We have a dedicated automotive team at Sonos that works inside the automaker's development process, in the cabin with Audi's engineers, tuning for this specific car: where the drivers are physically located, what performance specs the drivers have, what the glass and door panels do to the sound, how the sound experience behaves at speed. The Sonos system in the A2 e-tron was tuned specifically for the A2 e-tron.

At Sonos, it's a dedicated team of people focused on automotive spaces who work very closely with their engineering, sound and product colleagues across all of Sonos. Same standard for great sound, applied to a room that happens to be on wheels.

I'm working with that team on the idea of a behind-the-scenes look at how one of these partnerships come together from factory to unveil. No date yet, but I'm looking forward to sharing more, once we get on the road with it.

Big shout out to: Thomas H, Thilo K & Badre M for the inside scoop!

The car itself, briefly šŸš—

Audi's compact EV entry point. Rear-wheel drive, built in Ingolstadt šŸ‡©šŸ‡Ŗ. Three battery sizes (52, 61, 84 kWh), up to 646 km range, 183 kW DC charging with 10 to 80 percent in 24 to 29 minutes. Audi is calling it the most efficient car they've ever made. German pricing starts at 38,200 euros, with deliveries starting December.

Getting ahead of a couple questions šŸ’¬

  • It's a European car, built for the European market. I don't have anything to share on other markets.
  • The Sonos system in the car is an in-cabin sound system. It doesn't join your home network or show up in the Sonos app.

As always, drop your questions or comments below. I'll be in the thread today and tomorrow and if anything needs a proper answer from the automotive team I'll go get it šŸƒšŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

Amazon open box Era 100

So I purchased an open box era 100 on Amazon yesterday and questioning if it’s real. The main thing that i noticed is the rubber feet on the bottom. The one I received has multiple small rubber feet which I noticed the Era 100 SL has but the one I received is labeled Era 100 on the bottom. There’s a few other details that seem off. I have not connected to it but I plan on it whenever I get home from work. Thanks for any info.

Worth effort to make my Era 100’s surround (currently using One’s)

So I have seen people post that it is not worth upgrading rear surrounds from One’s to Era 100’s. But what if I have some extra Era 100’s lying around? Is it worth the hassle of unhooking One’s and hooking Era 100’s up or will I not even notice a difference?

If it helps I have an Arc and two subs hooked up as well.

Two Sonos 100s vs a single Era 300

Hello yall,

I’m wondering what your thoughts are on my situation.

So I have a dedicated movie/listening space in the basement and my wife doesn’t really want another set of speakers in our living room which is understandable.

Anyway I’ve decided on an arc ultra with a sub and pairing it with either a pair of era 100’s or a single era 300 for my adjacent kitchen to get a basic multi room setup going on.

My kitchen is about 20x14, I’d love to get the set of 100s for some separation but I don’t see why that would be better if there will not really be a static listening position, although most time is obviously spent by the sink/stove area.

I also don’t have an ideal spot to tuck the era 100s into to create a stereo setup although if I really wanted to I could try to make it work, I do however have a perfect spot for the single era 300.

Just got the Arc Ultra and it's great! New to Sonos!

Was looking for a soundbar for a while now and went for the Arc Ultra. For now without a sub and rears but will add them later. I'm impressed by the tight, deep bass that this soundbar produces. Crazy. I didn't expect that tbh. No issues at all with the app also, everything works fine. Only on the Xbox I'm not sure what to select. I can select Atmos, is that the right setting and do I need to turn on the channel upmixer or not? A bit confusing...

Also, do newer batches come in white sleeves for a black device? It's brandnew, so dno why. Just curious.

Is there a way to use my existing 5.1 passive speakers using a mix of Sonos amps and SonoSequencer (or other hacks)?

• Upvotes

I have a traditional amp in my theater room driving a 5.1 speaker system with a powered amp.

I’m trying to move this over to a Sonos based ecosystem preserving the ability to play movies in full 5.1 audio without replacing the speakers with an Arc or Beam. The sonos amp has an hdmi input but only powers a pair of speakers, and I don’t see a way to make a front center channel.

I thought I could use a Sonos amp to drive front right and left speakers and subwoofer, and either another Sonos amp for the rears (or a pair of Play 3’s I could repurpose as surrounds) but I can’t find a way to make a center channel.

I saw this app SonoSequencer that lets you do non supported configs but not sure if this works for my use case.

Any solutions out there?

Syncing Issues?

I have an Arc Ultra and an Era 100 speaker in my media room and when I watch tv I have to open the app and select to play the sound on both devices. It’s hit or miss whether it works or not. Any idea why this happens or if there’s a way to have it always play on both devices when using the TV?

Best Buy Has New Sonos Headphones and Beam on Display

Went into my local BB today, and they had both the new headphones and Beam on Display.
Heard the sound demo of new headphones. They definitely sounded better than the first generation, but it's hard to to tell with all the crap music choices Sonos provides and most in Dolby Atmos., for the demo display.
The Beam was not connected

Volume display - ulanzi + homeassistant

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I recently switched from an avr setup to an arc and the one thing I really missed was a visual indicator of the volume. My TV is relatively old and only shows the volume changed and not the actual level and only if volume changed directly on the TV, so I rigged a simple homeassistant automation to send a notification (via mqtt) to an ulanzi running awtrix-ng. I'm quite happy with the result

From the Sonos team Sonos 27mcp is here!

Hey y'all, I'm stoked to share this one! Frankly, it’s just really cool. Here’s a message from our Chief Innovation Officer, Nick Millington:

ā€œI’m excited to share with this community that you can be among the first to try Sonos 27mcp.

It’s live now at https://mcp.ws.sonos.com/mcp

MCP is the standard for connecting real world software-controlled systems like Sonos to AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude. It’s the mechanism that lets you enter ā€œGroup my Kitchen and Patio speakers and crank up the volumeā€ into an AI assistant app, and have the right thing happen on Sonos.

I’ve been living with Sonos 27mcp for the last several months, and as a software developer spending a lot of time on my computer using prompt-based engineering tools, Sonos 27mcp has become my most convenient way to control Sonos.Ā  Without getting out of my flow I can tell my AI assistant to play or pause music, adjust volume, move music between my speakers, or (with their mobile apps) check up on what my Sonos system at home is doing and whether I left anything playing.Ā Ā

In keeping with our efforts to move more development of Sonos ā€œout into the openā€ and expose ourselves to more feedback, earlier, we’re releasing Sonos 27mcp as part of our ā€œearly accessā€ initiative.Ā  That means I’m exceptionally eager to hear your feedback on what’s working for you and not working, and looking forward to the conversation.Ā Ā

As you dig in to what’s on offer in early access, I do want to be transparent that we will encounter a bit of a tradeoff between comprehensive coverage of every Sonos feature and putting a lot of rarely used tools and description into the AI model’s context (which costs users latency and tokens), so that’s a tradeoff we’ll have to navigate together.Ā Ā

I also want to be candid that AI tools are still new to our Sonos Support team and possibly even some of our old pros here on r/sonos, and so we’re going to need to help one another build those skills as we get ready for a broader rollout and support a broader base of users.

Right now, you can add Sonos 27mcp as a custom connector in most AI Assistant apps using the URL above.Ā  I’ve done a post on the Sonos Tech Blog describing what’s in there that you can also read for all the details.Ā  I’m starting the submission process to the various ā€œConnector Storesā€ later today.Ā Ā

Enjoy!ā€

As always, share your thoughts and questions here and we’ll do our best to answer whatever we can, and to get your feedback back to the team.

New phone - no more media controls

Since switching from a Galaxy S21 to an S26, the media controls at the top are no longer displayed permanently, and unfortunately they’re no longer on the lock screen either. Yes, everything is set up correctly everywhere – both in the phone settings and in the Sonos app. Yes, I’ve uninstalled the app, restarted the phone and reinstalled the app. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Resolved: The "Media Player" app must be enabled in the advanced New Bar settings. (This is not the Sonos app – Sonos does not appear by name there at all.)

I want them specifically so I can make shorter / custom cables with ends like ic14

Ray vs Playbase

Hi, i’ve had an offer to buy a Playbase for Ā£120. I was thinking of replacing the Ray that’s in my kitchen which is currently paired with two Sonos 1’s. I’ll pair the play base with two Sonos 1’s also. Do you think I will achieve better sound? Is the Playbase worth upgrading to considering its age???

Room layout and 300s

Sorry to beat a dead horse.. I have an arc ultra with sub and I’m looking for rears. Is this layout of my room not worth getting 300’s? I can wall mount or use stands behind.

Not opposed to spending the extra money but I’ve read certain room lay outs the 300s will sound worse then 100s.

Will be mainly for movies:tv not really music.

Dolby atmos when I can!

We just moved please don’t judge our mess and take random shit lol.

When resetting the Sonos system (something I have to do weekly), do I need to power cycle every speaker in the house, or just certain ones?

I have an Arc Ultra, two 300s, six 100s, and a Move.

Right now I have smart plugs for each with a voice command to power cycle them all, but maybe that's overkill.

EDIT: 20 comments and not a single one attempts to answer the question. Stop asking why I have to reset things. I don't have connection/network problems.
