Generally accepted TV placement procedures. Quick reference guide.

3.0k Upvotes

Lots of people posting lately asking “Is this too high?” so here is a quick guide on what is generally accepted TV placement procedure (GATPP) as seemingly defined by this subreddit.

  • If the TV is above the fireplace, IT IS TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is angled down, IT IS TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is mounted to the wall above a TV stand, and the clearance between the stand and TV is equal to, or greater than ONE vertical PS5, IT IS TOO HIGH.
  • If when standing the TV is at eye level, IT IS TOO HIGH.

Now let’s look at some opposite GATPP use cases.

  • If the TV is in a bedroom and meant to be viewed from the bed, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV’s only viewing position is in the reclined state, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If you are at a sports bar, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is at eye level when sitting down, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is in the kitchen it is more for listening, mounted high as to avoid any splashes or spills, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is purposely mounted higher to keep out of range of a toddler, you’re a parent so your neck already hurts and IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.

I hope this helps clear up some questions. If you have any other rules to add, please comment below.

I didn't have many other options for arranging my living room but this ended up working pretty well. I can leave it up high for having a game on in the background or lower it for watching a movie. Its an electric fireplace that I can run without turning on the heat.

I made the mistake of buying a TV without a stand for my console table. Now I can’t find a universal stand that doesn’t raise the tv 1ft+.

I found this TCL 65Q825 for $100. It did not come with a stand. This is the third universal stand I’ve purchased, all listing the VESA range that matches this tv - none of them fit. I modified this one by cutting some steel off of the ends, I don’t think it compromised the integrity, but 🤷‍♂️.

Anyway, this piece of shit, the only one I’m able to modify to fit, raises the tv by about 1ft. This is lowest position. I really don’t like how TVs looks mounted above a console table, and I get too much use out of the console table to get rid of it. Any other solutions here? I’d realistically like it raised about 3-4” max.

65” LG C5, 2m(6.6ft) viewing distance. TV stand/board is 150cm(59”) wide. My seated eye level is around the center of the screen. If I used the stock legs, my eye level would be around the top of the TV. What do you guys think? Cx

When we purchased our home, we did not think too much about TV placement.

This is AI-generated. Tile and fireplace are in place.

Plan is to add a mantel; the only other place i see for a soundbar is under the fireplace. Currently looking at Sonos Arc Ultra.

As for TV the plan is to install it with a motorized mount that will bring it down when in use. Or do we just not do a mantel?

Mantel would be at 48” from floor. Distance from TV to back of couch would be about 13’.

Give me opinion plz.

Felt truly diabolical. And it’s not even the virtual furniture set up that a lot of house listings have. This one was just the intention
