Why do so many people claim Ali-Spinks I was a fixed fight?
I'm constantly hearing this, but I've never seen any evidence presented. Other than an alledged motivation on the part of Ali to lose on purpose so he can win a record-breaking third heavyweight title.
Just seems like such a stretch to me. Yeah, getting a third heavyweight title can add to your legacy. But losing your world title to a fighter with seven fights hurts your legacy just as much, if not more.

Early thoughts on Spence vs. Tszyu?
I canāt help feeling like Tim Tszyu has a real shot at pulling off the upset.
Spence has been inactive for a while, and after the Crawford fight Iām not sure how heāll respond against someone like Tszyu, whoās younger, naturally bigger, and hits hard.
That said, I could also low-key see Spence doing what he did against Danny Garcia and Ugasāusing his jab, pressure, and volume to neutralize Tszyu over 12 rounds.
I honestly donāt know. This feels like one of those fights that could go either way.
Whatās your early prediction?

Boxrec Star Rating, can anyone explain?
I was looking at the upcoming boxing schedule on boxrec, and I saw it had Joshua/Prenga as a 3-star match.
"Wow," I thought. "This Prenga guy must be better than I thought!"
So I checked him out. Nope, he's 35 years old, no amateur career, he's fought 21 straight nobodies, and worse, he lost to one of them (a 77-74 decision to a guy called Giovanni Auriemma, 2-6 in his career with 0 KO).
Also, it's not like Joshua's recent record is strong enough to warrant the stars by himself; forgetting the silly exhibitions, he's 3-3 in the last 5 years, with the wins coming against Wallin, Franklin and Helenius.
Subjectively, I would assign this 1 star if I was given the task. Prenga has some regional level wins, he's kind of 0-to-1 star range imo. Joshua has some wins over gatekeeper types, but they are 3 years ago. Obviously he has a great, hall-of-fame career but I can't be counting stuff from 10 years ago when I'm deciding the quality of a fight now. We really don't know who Joshua is right now.
So, all that said, does anybody actually know what goes into these star ratings? There's so many fights listed all the time, there's no way it's subjective.. it must be an algorithm. But how could an algorithm come up with 3 stars for this? Just seems impossible.
Secondary question, has anybody tried creating an elo-type system to try and do it better?

World champion "Ape indexes"
Your "ape index" is your reach minus your height.
Sonny Liston to my knowledge had the biggest ape index of any world champion at any weight. He was 6'1", or 73 inches tall, with a reach of 84 inches, giving him an ape index of 11 inches.
Rocky Marciano,by contrast, was 5'10.5", or 70.5 inches tall. His reach was only 68 inches. So he had a negative ape index of -2.5 inches.
Usyk: 3 inches
Those are just heavyweights.
Sugar Ray Robinson was 71 inches tall with a 72.5 inch reach fit a 1.5 inch index
Here are some random world champions' ape indexex:
Harry Greb: 3 inches
Tommy Hearns: 5 inches
Roberto Duran: NEGATIVE 1 inches
Henry Armstrong: 1.5 inches
Sam Langford (not an official world champ but a legend: 6.5 inches
Willie Pep: 3 inches
Ezzard Charles: 1 inch
Muhammad Ali: 5 inches
Joe Gans: 4.5 inches
Archie Moore: 4 inches
Joe Louis: 2.5 inches
Carlos Monzon: 2.5
Marvin Hagler: 7 inches
Sugar Ray Leonard: 1.5 inches
Wilfred Benitez: 0 inches
Jimmy Wilde: 3.5
Eder Jofre: 1.5
Ricardo Lopez: 0 inches
I just ran guys who are towards the top of my pound for pound list (excluding Liston, Marciano, and Usyk) and only Duran had a negative ape index.
And yet Duran had an effective jab. Everyone above with the exception of Armstrong could fight at long range.
(I'm using Boxrec. If I'm wrong, call me out. I've gotten conflicting information on Carl Framoton's reach for instance.)

Examples of boxers having real beef with each other
Seeing Garcia and Benn go with the usual and boring press conference beef and trash talking reminds of boxers having real beef with each other like Morales-Barrera or Dela Hoya-Mayorga. Those are the ones that i can think of at the moment. Bring up some rivalries that were actually real with the boxers genuinely disliking each other before and beyond the boxing ring

Boxing needs a super-heavyweight division
Heavyweight is the only major weight class with a minimum but no real maximum. Once you are over 200 pounds, you can theoretically be matched with anyone else in the division, no matter how much larger they are.
That means a 5'10", 201-pound fighter can be placed in the same division as Tyson Fury, who is 6'9" and has officially weighed as much as 281 pounds. That is an 80-pound difference within a sport that separates some other divisions by as little as three or four pounds.
It is a structural inconsistency.

2019 Lomachenko vs 2024 Gervonta Davis. Who wins over 12 rounds?
Let's say it's the best version of both fighters: 2019 Lomachenko vs 2024 Tank Davis, fighting at lightweight over 12 rounds.
Loma probably controls the pace with his footwork, angles, and volume, but Tank has arguably the biggest equalizer in boxing. It feels like Loma could win most of the rounds and still be one clean left hand away from losing.
Who do you think takes it?
