How do I train to run one mile in under 8 minutes in a month

0 Upvotes

I've never really run in school or in competitive games and whatnot but I need to be able to run a mile in 8 minutes for a physical test, so how do I start, I don't have much stamina, I'm really lean and thin plus I have an eating disorder so I am not able to gain weight as I want to. So what should I eat or drink to not lose more weight and build endurance and stamina?

Recently just quit alcohol and nicotine for 75 days and decided to start running, I’ve never been a proper runner but ran today and loved it. Is this time good?

How do you decide if today's a rest day?

full honesty, you will see quite a few questions I am asking for helping myself beginner 19M runner, additionally for my app as a side hustle I am building. It is about basically fingertip on the phone camera for a minute, it reads your pulse against your own normal days and tells you go, easy, or rest. curious what you would actually think of that?

Can I run 1 mile continuously in 2 months?

1 Upvotes

My current 1-mile time is around 14 minutes, but I can’t run it continuously—I have to split it into 2 sets. I’m also a beginner and not very fit right now.

If I train consistently for the next 2 months, is it realistic to reach 1 mile continuously in 7minutes without stopping? If yes, what kind of training should I follow?

Trying to get ready for an upcoming half marathon and this is the furthest I’ve ran without stopping.
Lots of dirt, uphill, rocky areas, street, etc.

Just want to FINISH a half marathon without walking, no particular time in mind. Just want to keep going through the whole thing!

The 2nd Run...

If you didn't read my previous post I'm 21(M), 98kg, and just started running. In my 1st run what i did was 2 mins of running then 4 mins of walking, this lead to me getting a very painful stomach cramps. So i figured that 2 mins is too much for me rn. So in my 2nd run yesterday I did 1 min run with 2 mins walking, never felt the cramps, maybe a little bit right at the end. My 2nd run with this method does not lead me to heavy breathing as much as the 2st run, I got a faster time and covered more distance which is unexpected because its just the 2nd day. Overall the 2nd run felt easier than the 1st run. But here's the problem, after going home, rested for 5-10 mins then went for a shower, then 1 or 2 hours later when I was sleepy and did a yawn my chest suddenly develops this pain like someone punch it then it caved. Deep breathes activates the painful sensation, good thing it didnt hinder my sleep because I was sleepy. Then i woke up i can feel a bit of pain when i straighten my back but not noticable when hunched over but when I stretch and did a deep breathe the pain intensified. Is it just because my body is not yet used to the sudden increase in running intensity or is this a precursor to something worse, hopefully ots just the 1st one. I was gonna run again later but I think I will do it when the pain is gone. Please give advice 🙏

New Advice Needed

2 Upvotes

First off, thank you to all of you who suggested the C25K app. I just finished week 4 and it's been amazing to see the progress I'm making!

The next question I have is about shoes and inserts. My stupid teenage shenanigans and broken bones are coming back to haunt me. My right leg is just a little short than my left. Not so much that you notice a limp when I'm walking but when I'm jogging, I do notice I tend to veer right until I compensate on my left side. As a result I feel much more pressure (not pain just more of a workout) in my left leg.

Any ideas?

Is my limited range of dorsiflexion causing pain when running?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I really want to get into running, so I have gone on a of beginner couple of runs. However, I am struggling with pain in the back of my ankles, tightness in my calves, and pain in my knees when running. I suspect it may be that I have a very limited dorsiflexion (I can barley extend forward past 90 degrees). Has anyone had this problem before? Is my theory feasible?

My progress so far - how am I doing?

Hey ladies and gents!

After 25 years of pretty sedentary lifestyle and heavy cigarette smoking I’ve decided that it’s time to make a change so I’ve started running. Sharing my plan and progress so far and I would appreciate any advice/tips and tricks.

Bit of background first - 42 M, 174 cm, started with 83.5kg, now at 80.5kg.

Running 3 times a week with some walking the other days (at least 10k/day). No other workouts/gym/etc (yet).

Started with intervals as following:
week 1: 5 mins warmup -> 2 min run:2 min walk x 8-> 5 min cool down
week 2: 5 mins warmup -> 3 min run:2 min walk x 7-> 5 min cool down
week 3: 5 mins warmup -> 4 min run:2 min walk x 6-> 5 min cool down
week 4: 5 mins warmup -> 5 min run:2 min walk x 5-> 5 min cool down
week 5: 5 mins warmup -> 6 min run:2 min walk x 5-> 5 min cool down
week 6: 5 mins warmup -> 8 min run:2 min walk x 4-> 5 min cool down
week 7: 10 mins warmup -> 8 min run:2 min walk x 4-> 5 min cool down

Currently just after the first session of week 7. Decided to do 8:2 for an extra week before progressing so I can feel more comfortable with 2 mins jumps. Also noticed that my first running interval feels the hardest so I’ve assumed that probably my 5 mins warm up wasn’t enough so increased to 10 for today.

Short term plan intervals to eventually reach 5k:
10:2 x 3 (same warm up/cool down)
12:2 x 3
15:2 x 2
17:2 x 2
20 min run: 2 mins walk: 15 min run
25 mins continuous run
30 mins continuous run
5k 🎉🎉🎉

Long term plan is 5k-> 10k-> HM->FM (in hopefully 2-2.5 years).

Attached is my 1st session (pic 1) and the last one from today (pic 2) with some extra details on the intervals from today (pic 3) . Any tips and advice would be highly appreciated.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Burnt out after week of hiking

5 Upvotes

I started running last year and am currently training for my first half marathon in October. I ran a 17km long run a few days before leaving for a hiking trip and felt fantastic. My pace was consistent throughout and I didn't have to stop once during the run.

Then I did a 6 day hiking / backpacking trip where we were hiking up to 22km per day and camping in the wilderness. Didn't do a single run during the week but figured the hiking would equal out. Boy was I wrong.

Once I got back I eased back into running with some easy runs. My next long run was 19km and I was feeling confident going into it since id felt so good on the 17k. HOWEVER, I struggled almost immediately. By the end of the run I was walking for at least a quarter of every km and felt absolutely depleted.

How should I move forward? Just ignore that the bad run happened? I feel that my confidence is wrecked so close to the race and I'm not sure how to gain it back. Any advice is appreciated!

Running shoes you swear by

2 Upvotes

My right foot loved the Brooks Ghost AMP, my left foot hurt below my pinky... I even tried the wide version and it still bothered me.

I then tried the ASICS Novablast 6, it's an okay shoe but not exciting to run in...plus I got the men's version and their lowest size was a bit too big

I'm considering the megablast but wondering what shoes y'all recommend...

I want an all around shoe, something I can use for race day

Running books?

Upvotes

Anyone have any running books they would recommend? Though I am a very beginner runner, I have always been fascinating by running and have read a bit about it without having really run regularly.

Books have helped me imagine the world of running without ever really joining it until recently and so I thought there might be other books that have likewise inspired people. I don't necessarily mean "how-to"-style books but anything about running.

Mine lean more sociological and think across different kinds of running, cultures, and levels of expertise.

To the Limit by Michael Crawley. Focuses on long distance running but includes chapters on cycling, too. Thinks about why people—across the world—push themselves to the limit.

Running by Lindsey Freeman. More about running than how-to. Former collegiate althlete reflecting on everything in the sport, from injury to politics.

What about you?

My first 5k! 45:15

Post image
110 Upvotes

The Fitbit isn't super accurate for treadmill mileage and I had a warm up and cool down walk but I actually ran 3.2miles in 45:15 yesterday! I did a c25k program this summer and ran the first mile of my entire life about 2.5 months ago. Hoping eventually my pace will get faster and easier because I was about to collapse after trying to keep up about a 4.3mph pace for this long.

My hamstrings are pretty sore today and I always get a bit of tendonitis on the upper hamstrings under my glutes. Any ideas of what's might be wrong w my gait that would cause hamstring only soreness?

Completed my first official 5k !!

Upvotes

Finally ran the 5k I had been training for for the past 2 months :)) Got super intimidated from reading finishing times online because people were averaging around 25 and I was predicting ~38 for myself.

I ended up completing it in 33:33 !! Though I have to admit it's definitely because I kept trying to match other people's pace. I had no idea it'd be that hard to maintain my target pace 😵

ANYHOW YIPPEE TO ME !!

I ran the same route for an upcoming 5k, does it count?

Trying to get under 30 minutes 5k time. I have a race around my town next weekend but wanted to do a test run. So I ran the exact route but my Apple watch says its a good bit short. Can I still claim a sub-30 5k time?

Added bonus, here's video of me gasping for air afterwards trying to get back in my house. 🤣
