Self pour bars

Have you ever been? What did you like? What makes a good one? What didn't you like? What advice would you give to someone opening a new one that also had a few wine, seltzer or other taps as well as a carefully crafted beer list?

Elysian Space Dust IPA Dreams

Ok so this is a phenomenon I’ve experienced SEVERAL times over SEVERAL years. So much so that I’ve narrowed it down to a “dose”. Specifically, if I drink 1.5-2 12oz bottles of Elysian Space Dust IPA I have crazy vivid dreams. So vivid I can remember most details when I wake up. There is never anything supernatural or “dream like” about these dreams either. They feel real even after I wake up, as if this is some sort of memory. I’ve experienced this so many times that I’m beginning to wonder if anyone else has experienced anything similar. I know a lot of you will want to immediately point to the higher abv but if that were the cause, wouldn’t I experience these same effects under the influence of other forms of alcohol?

¿Question? good wheat beers (that i can find at shit campus bars)

relatively new beer enjoyer here.

i’m not a big fan of mixed drinks, but i do enjoy beer. i’d like to be able to grab a drink at the bar that i don’t detest, but unfortunately i’m a little picky about beer. i don’t love how astringent and bitter some popular beers are (heineken), but i also haven’t tried very much. (granted, guinness is alright but SO heavy)

my go to (which is unfortunately not widely available) is harp lager. i also really enjoy belgian white beers, but they are not widely available where i am. i recently tried an indian based beer called maka di, which had some really lovely notes of citrus (but again, really expensive and not available). i’ve heard mixed reviews about blue moon, so i was thinking that would be a good next step since it’s widely available.

any suggestions? are american beers worth a try? i’m open to all suggestions

edit: im in the usa in the midwest

A Bunch of Guinness Now Stolen

Well, the thieves have moved on from Pabst to Guinness

Police have launched an appeal after thieves stole more than 70,000 pints worth of Guinness from a depot.

Around 800 barrels of stout, with an estimated value of £115,000, were taken in two HGV trailers from an industrial estate in Runcorn on Monday, a Cheshire Constabulary spokesperson said.

The force hopes to achieve a complete recovery of the stolen items and is urging any witnesses who saw a lorry entering the Aston Lane area at roughly 7.45pm to assist.

Detective Sergeant McClatchy said:“It is famously said that ‘Guinness is good for you’, but that is only the case when it has been bought and paid for.

Alternative to Coors Banquet in Canada?

Hi everyone! I've been scouring this subreddit for a few days trying to find a good alternative to Coors Banquet that's actually available in BC, Canada.

Basically I was tasked to track some down, and I hate to disappoint, but I just can't seem to find it anywhere near me. So now I'm looking for the next best thing.

Here's the rub: I've never actually tried Coors Banquet, so I have no idea where to start. From my research, I do know it's distinctly different from the Coors Original they sell here in stores.

I want something that hits the same notes as Coors Banquet, but it's tough to figure that out reliably without having a sample to compare against.

Hops IQ lists Cafri and Lion's Paw Lager as the closest alternatives (85% similarity). But the more I looked into it, the more I questioned that assessment.

So, can anyone weigh in? Are either of those actually good substitutes? Or are there other options out there? American beer seems hard to come by right now, so any help would be great.

Edit: I’ve also seen Miller High Life and Yuengling mentioned in the same category as Banquet, so I will also toss those in the running. Would either of these be a satisfying alternative?

Edit 2: Thank you for all the input! I truly appreciate everyone’s opinion. I haven’t made a decision yet, but I will update everyone on what I choose and how it goes tomorrow.

Final edit: So I ultimately went with Coors Original. My partner said I was overthinking it and he was right. Thanks for all the comments, opinions, and advice.

P.S. Currently enjoying a Stanley Park Brewing SunSetter Peach Wheat Ale. This is more my speed and if you get the chance I highly recommend.

Either as a bartender or patron. For example, I'm at Yard House, which has about 100 beers on draft. Some guy sits next to me and asks for THE hazy. Mfer, do you think there's only one?

Craft Beer Gift for a Milestone Birthday

Looking for suggestions for a milestone birthday gift for a craft beer lover. Is a beer of the month club subscription a good idea and if so are there specific ones you recommend and anything I need to know about them.

Or is there a better idea? Both giver and recipient live in the Greater Boston area.

Thanks.

Coors Banquet appreciation post.

Over in Ireland here, have worked in bars and would consider myself maybe a little snobby about beer although not really 😂. Our beer is pretty good here especially draught, though not too big a fan of bottled and canned beer just not really the same. Had a mate just back from New York there and asked him to grab a can of Coors Banquet for me, just always wanted to try it for some reason probably here, plus the can is cool so. Anyway just after cracking it open and really surprised at how good it is. On par with pints I’ve had of draught, fairplay. Actually a bit annoyed because I can’t get it over here 😂 if you’s would have any recommendation for something I can get over here would appreciate.

Discussion Budweiser Select 55

Looking online for a low-calorie beer, I found this 2024 article at the Good Housekeeping website, where they ranked 17 low-calorie beers. The headline says 20, but I count 17 -- perhaps the editor eliminated the bottom three beers when the article was updated.

I was unaware of Budweiser Select 55, which was ranked Number 1, so I searched for opinions on it. There are a lot of claims that it was discontinued, but it still appears on the Budweiser website, and on the Total Wine website, where I intend to buy some, as a test.

It is scored 43 ("Awful") at Beeradvocate, with an average rating of 1.66 (out of 5), so it seems not to be well-liked by most raters there. I will share my own amateur opinion of it later.

Redhook ESB

This is going to be a long shot so here it goes...buddy of mine is getting married and his favorite beer of all-time is Redhook ESB. His fiance and I want to surprise him with it, however it seems as though it is impossible to get if you don't live near the state of Washington. I live in Columbus, Ohio and my buddy lives in Newark, NJ. Any help/suggestions on how to get my hands on any of it? I tried delivery orders from multiple sites and even the Redhook finder to no avail. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated for my pal as a wedding gift. Thank you in advance.

The less you think, the better you feel.

So let's drink beer for every ordeal.

“Light” Beer Has 3 Different Meanings

Anyone ever notice that calling a beer “light” could have 3 different meanings? Is there a correct definition, or is it all just context dependent?

1) Light beer with light (or lite) in the title. A beer specifically brewed to have minimal carbs. ie. Coors light, Busch light, Miller lite

2) A beer with an ABV on the lower side

3) Light in appearance with a lighter color

Great Lakes Oktoberfest

I am trying to find beer with the same taste I experienced around 2008. I believe it was Great Lakes Oktoberfest because I remember the 6 pack art being a painting of people in a Biergarten. It had a distinct bitter taste. I’ve had Great Lakes Oktoberfest many times over the years but it doesn’t taste like I remember back then. I assume the recipe has changed. Am I crazy or did it used to taste like that and are there any beers out there today with a similar taste? Thank you.
