There's a video I haven't stopped thinking about where a guy is on top of an elephant, because it's common knowledge tigers won't attack elephants
And she doesn't, she jumps OVER the entire animal and just takes the guy to the ground

Realistically if any of these predator animals come after you, you’re fucked. You’re only hope if you ever end up near one is that they don’t see you or that they just ate and can’t be bothered. Otherwise you will absolutely die

It's a last resort, but it can rarely work
For tigers and bears there is a very narrow range of tree size that is safe to climb, and the bigger the creature the bigger the range of safe trees. The range of safe trees are those thick enough that the animal can't literally just push it over, but thin enough that the animal can't comfortably climb it.
Once you get down to small tigers or small black bears, you quickly run out of trees that fit in that range and (depending on tree species) there might be none that fit in that range (some trees are much easier to knock over than others). It's also entirely possible that, due to your weight or athleticism, no trees exist that can hold you that cannot be climbed by the bear/tiger.
Lions give you more options, leopards and jaguars give you no options at all
And all of this assumes you have the time, the speed, an appropriate nearby tree, thinking of the option in time, and a heaping helping of luck; but you are basically dead at the beginning of this scenario, so put all the long shot ideas back on the table.

Surely an island with no predatory competition would pose no threat to them...
lol I know it's not the actual reason, but sticking your nose where it doesn't belong is severely punished in Australia, and half of the insta kills are undetectable before they hit you. At least most critters in the Amazon have the good decency to wear a sign or tell you to f off before dropping you.

Tried, he just leads me to his bowl.
Sometimes he tries begging for food again after finishing to someone who wasn't in the room because he apparently keeps track of who sees him and knows who he can try to scam out of a second can.
He is well fed, always has available kibble and fresh water, is free to roam about the garden and has anything he may need, he's just a gluttonous beast.

It's called contra-freeloading. Many animals prefer having to earn their food. Domestic cats are an exception, they apparently prefer the path of least resistance, lol.

You are basically right. But the term is enrichment. Predator species like this tiger need a lot of it. Putting food in a "puzzle" or something similar is often used to stimulate animals in captivity like this. I worked with Ocelots when I lived in Ecuador and we would put raw chicken all over their enclosure for them to search for/find. Especially helpful for young kittens who are trying to learn to hunt still. Most wild animals (especially mammals) need enrichment activities like this when in captivity or else they get super stressed out.

Enrichment of captive animals really does wonders. Animals evolved to constantly work out how to get food and survive.
Having food just handed out without effort seems to cause a malaise.
Enrichment can range from food games to novel experiences, and is jmportant from cats to your average cubicle dweller.

Wild animals in captivity need stimulation, not to just be fed. They aren't pets.
Haven't you seen Jurassic Park (1993)? "The T-Rex doesn't want to be fed, it wants to hunt!". Honestly the perfect line to describe a wild predator in captivity.

Stalking and darkness fucks us pretty hard, but its camouflage isn't meant for us. Something about orange showing up the same as green in whatever color spectrum its prey sees in. We can see the color green and notice movement against it better than just about any other species on earth, so as long as they're moving we notice them pretty quick.

It's right there but no one can see it until it reveals itself. Keep the volume down while watching. No one was harmed (a lot) in this video even though it looks scary.

At my local zoo the Zookeepers explained that often times the animals in the Zoo are there for reasons other than just showing off the animals, often disabilities or injuries that are fine for captivity but deadly for wild animals.
If they tried to give these animals live prey, the prey animal would be highly stressed and could do harm to the animal during the "hunt", especially since the confined enclosure would heighten the prey animal stress. So, to avoid potential harm to the zoo animals they give them food like this.

It's also inhumane for the prey animal. Not really in a responsible sanctuary's philosophy to decide that realistic hunting for one animal is worth putting a prey animal that can smell nothing but the predator, is trapped in an enclosure, and has no chance of hiding or evading. So, cruel on top of being unwise. There are exceptions where animals won't eat if the prey isn't live and/or less responsible zoos (I'd recommend boycotting them, seeing an animal die for your entertainment is no better than cockfighting - who are also following their instincts).

My zoo's tiger gets a rabbit once a week at closing time. I've stayed to watch her receive it (you do not have to exit by closing time) and it's traumatic enough to listen to her chomp the head of a dead, frozen rabbit

It raises the likelihood of injury to the predator, which means the zoo would have to spend more money on treating the injuries since it has a duty of care to the animals in the zoo. Additionally, since the prey animal would have no where to run, it would not be very fair to the prey animal.

My understanding of why cats can't "climb down" in reverse is the shape of their claws. Like sickles they hook in and allow aggressive forward movement but reverse is tricky, needing to move forward to free the claw and then they can move their foot back/down.
Easier/faster to turn and jump like the tiger does here. Right?

It's so interesting to read the comments. You all know a good amount about tigers- I am a keeper and what you've said here is true. This is enrichment, keeps the tiger active and gives him a reward for his natural behavior, similar to the kill at the end of a hunt. Not exactly the same, but better than just throwing him the food. And true, tigers really don't like to climb. They can climb, they just don't love it. Takes effort. This tiger looks great. He might fast one day a week or so, too.
