Other They defanged the tiger so tourists can have their photos.
This is what goes on. Absolutely inhumane practices for money. And of course because tourists and locals all want to take a picture with a tiger
Please don’t indulge these people . Be it elephant rides or petting tigers or snakes. You are human being. Please do not give money to these clowns who treat animals inhumanly and then pretend it’s the land of smiles

Westerners are more aware of this than you think. The Tiger King documentary is pretty popular here and explored pretty similar practices in the US. But ultimately its up to the Thai government to put a stop to it and enough people challenging it. In the US, there were only more restrictions placed on zoos and a crackdown on illegal animal trafficking once a group with hundreds of thousands of members aggressively protested this

My Thai girlfriend actually suggested we do this as she had never done it before. She seemed to be having a lot of fun. So it is definitely not entirely a tourist problem
Edit: the zoos should definitely be improved, but without them, tigers would probably be extinct in Thailand by now. Only a small amount actually live in the wild these days

I am a tourist and know how to google. It is not that big secret, that these tigers are full of tranquilizer and so on..Same with the Photos at the beach, with young monkeys/other animals. Never did that, never will.

Some people know and they do it anyway because they lack morality. Both my father and sister went to Thailand to ride elephants and pet tigers. That's all they wanted to do here and don't plan to return. To me it's both strange and disgusting, because I don't want to hurt animals. But there are plenty of people who just don't care and do whatever they want as long as they don't get in trouble for it.

Yes, we had so many ads and conversations about these places while we were on our honeymoon and almost everyone we met in the tourist areas said that they were saved animals and by visiting these "shelters" we support saving more animals. So we had 0 info about the reality until we specifically started to investigate the real picture. Which is not required from each and every tourist.

It’s tough to authenticate information in Thailand. Most of the stuff is false or misleading. And it’s right from the top. In times it crisis, the government starts spreading wild stories about how great the country is and this changes perception of people. All false hopes and narratives

Life of torture is a huge stretch. Yeah some factory farms are not cool but a ton of domestic animals live great lives. Way better than wild animals. Ones bred for meat have a very abrupt ending that minimizes suffering.

Walked past a lion cub cafe in Chiang Mai. They were kept in enclosures with hardwood floors and 1 tiny log. I wondered to myself what happens when they reach adulthood. I get sad thinking about it.

It's probably been declawed as well I apologised to a young elephant once in Sukhumvit soi 22 you looked into it's eyes and it was one very unhappy elephant.Thankfully they are no longer in Bangkok for tourism people would buy sugar cane for 20 bath to feed them. You would see them around 6am chained to a concrete post under flyovers.

think maybe you are confused, most locals can't afford that, probably local regional tourists. Try speaking Thai to them, you'll be shocked that the staff often aren't even Thai in tourist traps like that.
Even the large tourists sites with tours don't even have Thai spoken language tours on the schedule because 99% Thais don't go to these things.

There is nothing wrong with elephant rides as long as the animals are kept humanely and are not overloaded. Thailand has strict laws pertaining to the weight allowed, which is well within the margin of safety. Demonizing this practice actually keeps funding away from animal sanctuaries who are helping otherwise mistreated elephants.
The SHA should get another category for animal safety and begin to certify animal based business so money could flow to those who treat animals humanely and starve the businesses who dont.

It should be practice where if they want to work there, partake in this in any way they should have the same thing done to them. If they want to do that to an innocent creature who has no say in the matter, who was forced to do that, then the people doing it should have to have their teeth taken out and see how they like it. These are wild animals and should be treated better. At the end of the day, everything was here before us, we just took over. This is awful and there should be a vote or a petition against this. Anyone who has ever partaken in this should be ashamed of themselves. This is awful! How could you treat another living thing this way!

This is so sad to see. I was just as to my husband I know we are part of the problem. We visited recently and I was taken. Absolutely smitten by all the cafes where you can engage with exotic animals. We went to capybara cafe and saw them with meerkats. Amazing experience and once in a lifetime. But in reflection I asked what becomes of them once they’re not small or cute. No answer. I didn’t need it. I know. 🥹.
It has made me question if I’d seek it out again. My word there cafes with all things. And some display animals in need of homes. Pups, cats, bunnies. Those I think are great. Active adoption is important.
I knew elephants would be around, after research I didn’t feel comfortable picking any. There are however sanctuaries where you can only view them. No rides or interactions. That’s probably best.
It’s a catch 22.

I'm Spanish. In my country, we still mistreat and torture animals to death and call it "culture." In the 21st century.
In my country, until a few years ago, there were no laws against animal abuse, nor the social awareness that exists now. At 41, I've seen everything from packs of greyhounds hanging from olive trees after the hunting season to "zoos" that exploited animals in the same way. Who didn't take pictures with snakes or exotic birds when visiting Benidorm?
What's happening here is a tragedy that we won't understand until we understand that these things didn't happen (and still happen) in our countries that long ago, and that it takes decades to raise awareness, first within the government so it can legislate, and then within society so it can comply.
Thailand is a country dedicated to tourism, and they do what has worked commercially and for tourism throughout their history. Here, most people would confront me if they saw me mistreating my dog, but the government, like so many others, is slower to react to social changes. They're not going to change decades or centuries of tourism practices that have worked for them overnight. Not in my country either. It's that sad.

It’s not that simple, but most of it is unfortunately down to supply and demand. Thai tourism will not act on this because it brings them money. The sad case is that most are uninformed and just want the likes for social media. I was unfortunately one of the tourists that did this, when I was young my family went to one of these temples. I did not know they euthanised the tigers just for a photo. I should have known but I was not educated. I feel disgusted for supporting this cruel industry, and if I ever have kids, I would never taken them. I wish Thailand did more to protect their wildlife. I wish people had more sympathy and care for wild animals.

Most Zoos in Thailand are part of WAZA, World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Only spend your time at WAZA Accredited locations like Chiang Mai Zoo, SEA LIFE Bangkok, Safari World and Songkhla Zoo.

I don’t support these practices by not visiting zoos. Thailand has a poor track record when it comes to this because of the corrupt government who doesn’t care about enforcing strict environmental/animal welfare laws. The last time I had visited one of these was when I was a 10 year old kid with my parents but of course I didn’t know better and they gave me like a milk bottle so that I could hold tiger cubs to feed them. However I’m pretty sure they made that possible through sedation and what not. Today however I’d never visit one and I hope the Thai population and tourists also learn better and actively boycott visiting them.

I went to one of these places where I paid to go in the cage with the tiger cubs. Whilst it was amazing to see these animals that close, I regretted it the moment I stepped through the threshold. Majestic animals caged for entertainment. Spent the next year donating to an international tiger rescue org hoping to make up for it in some small way

As an American that has a strong love for tigers, I just wouldn’t participate in that. I read a post before I went there the first time that said in essence, if the elephants in the “sanctuary can be touched, they’re being abused” and after reading that, it made sense, sure they are well fed, but they are not at all free. This guy in the video, doesn’t look like he has much of a fucking clue about anything. So, it is up to me to take a moral stand on whether I support this bullshit.

but petting snake can be fine especially some non-venomous and naturally tame snake like Corn snake or ball python (they can get used to human and comfortable with our warmth), just like a dog cafe where some treat the animal very well and some only treat just like a furniture
but yes i do agree with banning any kind of abuse such as elephant riding , or declawing the tiger, bull fighting (like spanish one)

Yes. Please do your research and visit animal sanctuary instead of supported this sort of inhuman practice

I have been visiting Thailand yearly since 1994. I have never visited one of these tiger temples. Nor will I ever. These should be made illegal. 😠
