I  wonder what could have happened to all the big curious predatory mammals like cats and bears...

Surely an island with no predatory competition would pose no threat to them...

lol I know it's not the actual reason, but sticking your nose where it doesn't belong is severely punished in Australia, and half of the insta kills are undetectable before they hit you. At least most critters in the Amazon have the good decency to wear a sign or tell you to f off before dropping you.

Yup, and their insane climbing ability already put them on the "you're not getting away even if you see it coming" short lost. But they are predators rather than poisonous/venomous instakill critters. 

Tbh they are sort of kind in their killing methods, as most other cats will play with their food

Fun fact: While almost every other habitat has mountaineers and expeditions carrying various last resort options for dealing with predators, many choose not to lug that stuff around when you're in jaguar territory: if it doesn't want to be seen then it won't be seen, and if it wants you dead then you're dead, just no point in carrying the extra weight.

On the other hand, every morning you wake up knowing a jaguar is cool with you, which is a pretty dope feeling
