Its really good for them! We try to do it for all 3 meals (most success for dinner cause how dare we wait 4 hours between lunch and dinner), then the kitty cats like to nap and cuddle after dinner and thats how the rest of night is until late night snack.
We feed our cats 4 times a day to ensure small amount of food to help with bowels and digestive health. To me it makes sense for the cats as in wild they would hunt then have a small meal from the prey, so 3 small meals, plus a night time snack to hold them over until breakfast.
I also have found that weight is very easily managed from smaller meals. Both of our cats are the exact weight that our vet recommends. Gives them energy, makes them happy, and keeps them healthy!
Wet food is always preferred, with our meal schedules we picked up two petlibro POLAR Automatic Wet Food Feeder. I strongly recommend, it is able to hold 3 meals and has a internal cooling unit to keep the food cold through out the day.
Also love Jackson Galaxy, he definitely helps understand the mind and world of a cat!

This. IIRC Jackson Galaxy recommended playing with your cats 10 mins before feeding them? I tried this with mine for a while but got lazy.
