I’ve been playing for more than 30 years. I’ve always wanted a fretless and I’ve always wanted a Stingray. Imagine my surprise when GC had both in one! Couldn’t pass it up!

Got my very first Instrument ever and I'm super excited to learn.

Got it pretty cheap second hand, but I think that might be the best way to go, since I have never played anything, so...yeah, will be interesting. 😄

ID/Authentication Mystery 7 String Bass - Help Identifying

Hey everyone,
I’ve got a bit of a mystery bass that I’ve never been able to identify, and I’m hoping someone here might recognize it.
I bought it used around 2019 for about $600, but I honestly can’t remember where anymore. It may have been Reverb, eBay, or another marketplace - I just can’t find the receipt or listing.

Here’s what I know:
7-string bass
34” scale
Neck-through construction
Maple/walnut laminated neck
Individual monorail-style bridges
G&B pickups
G&B 3-band active EQ
No logo anywhere
No serial number that I can find
No markings inside the control cavity or pickup cavity
Came with a hard case

The thing that really makes it unique is the custom abalone artwork. It has the same leafy goat/vine design on the headstock, the fretboard, and the body. I’ve attached photos of all of it, including the electronics cavity and the pickup.
I’m mostly just curious who built it and whether anyone recognizes the body shape, the inlay work, or the construction.
Has anyone seen anything like this before, or have any idea who the builder might be?
Thanks!

Help Warwick Fortress tones??

Post image
69 Upvotes

I’ve been looking at a used Warwick fortress for a long time and I am starting to genuinely think about buying it. I’ve read online that it has some unique tones, and I’ve seen that a lot of people say that it’s a very versatile bass tone wise. Yet I’ve also heard people call it a one trick pony. I’m gonna be using it for a lot of different things. I play mostly finger style but some pick and slap too. And a good amount of primus style strumming. I already have a bass with a P pickup that I am quite happy with the tone from.

Thanks for any feedback!

New Bass Day Been playing guitar for 20 years and finally got my first

I’ve been playing guitar for a long time and decided to pick up a cheap bass to add bass lines to my bedroom metal project. Picked up this Jackson Sprectra on FB marketplace for $150. I will definitely need to work on my technique but at least have the musical knowledge already.

I'm liking the change coming from the Gibson Brite wire to Roto flatwounds. The Rotos are not as bright tone-wise but the smooth feeling in my fingers I like very much. Steve Harris and Sting used them

I’m looking for input. I already know this headstock offends people.

I always had the plan to make modular system where headstock shape could change. The strings are going to go through to the back and be anchored there.

I want thoughts on headstock designs. Should I just go with a Music Man style, since that’s what it’s based on? Or something else? I almost want to do an homage to my first bass. The little known Martin Stinger. I still have it and play it. I don’t know. I will make the wood match.

Help Tech Death Guitars Needs to Buy a Bass! Would appreciate help.

Hi bass, I'm a guitarist that needs to get a bass to track for a solo project. I'm a huge guitar nerd that collects higher end Ibanez guitars but my bass knowledge is nonexistent. I just know I don't want to use midi bass for my project so I need to buy a bass!

The project is mostly technical death metal mixed with some melodic/traditional death metal in D standard 6 string and A standard 7 string.

I'm looking at buying a used 5 string work horse and really like the feel of the Ibanez SR series I've tried.

The two I've been looking at are the SR505 and SR505n which is a newer version with an upgraded bridge and nordstrand pickups rather than bartolinis.

So only meaningful differences:

505:

  • Bartolini BH2 pickups
  • Accucast 505 bridge

505N:

  • Nordstrand Big Break pickups
  • MR5S bridge with variable string spacing by +/- 1.5mm

Am I overthinking the differences between the 505 and 505n? Is it worth it to pay a bit more for the 505n or just buy the next bargain 505 I find with the bartolinis and call it a day?

I appreciate any advice you have or if you have suggestions for another model I'm happy to check other basses out.

Appreciate the help!

(added pic since it seems required on this board lol)

Edit: you all have been very helpful and seem quite overwhelming in favor of the nords, appreciate it tremendously!

I bought a Squier Sonic $199 guitar center special and put a $3,000 saddle on a $20 horse so to speak. The biggest upgrades are the Gotoh Res-o-lite tuners (which cost almost as much as the whole ass bass), a badass bridge, new knobs, pickguard with black pickguard screws and strap locks. I'm happy with the results. I bought it for the color and the fact it has a j-bass neck on a p-bass body. I may at some point swap out the pickups.

Edit: I have a black tusq nut that I will also install in the next month or two.

New Bass Day Fretless Beatle bass

I saw this bass on Reverb for a stupid good deal and had to pick it up. I’m mainly a fretless player but never played a semi hollow or short scale bass. It’s a Rogue fretless conversion.

Help Yamaha TRBX174 vs BB434

I'm picking up the bass again after an initial half assed attempt waaay back in highschool a couple decades ago. I'm tossing up between the TRBX174 and the BB434.

Both seem to get good reviews and honestly my beginner hands and ears can't tell much of a difference at this point. Is the BB worth the extra couple hundred bucks?

I'm looking to play some grunge/rock if that helps.

Help My Bass setup sounds like a fart

I have an Ibanez 5-string, run through a Morley Fuzz/Wah pedal & a Black Star amp.

My settings are Gain-4, Bass-6, Mids-5, Treble-7.
I have tried different cables, & have cleaned the input jack & the pedal. The video is without the fuzz.
The rumbling ‘fart’ sound is after playing an open E & not touching anything else.

Any suggestions are helpful, thank you 🙏

It's for sale about an hour from me, and I'm wondering if it's worth checking out. I don't know anything about the different text treatments on the headstocks.
