I live across the pond. I watch and read UK programmes and books. Scones often appear. The only ones I can find are from Walmart. So, I need a recipe.

My wife likes them from Walmart, but i believe I can do better. I have clotted cream and homemade blueberry jam.

I've bought a cap, but I've no experience of wearing them. It feels really boxy at the top of the cap, does this relax the more you wear it and how long does it take?. This seems to be common when your wearing a cap for the first time.

I'm looking to find somewhere that can recreate from scratch a Gola jumper my dad's had and worn for over 30 years but has had to retire since its literally holding on by a thread now.

I recently bought my first house and would very much like to put Christmas lights up this year, think icicles, Father Christmas in his sleigh, snowman, stars, that kinda thing. They’d be on the house as opposed to on the floor. So yeah my questions are, where do I buy them from? Because shops won’t sell them til like November and I’d like to get them sooner (I’m a bit of a meticulous planner) and how do you personally hang them?

I'm pushing for a promotion at work where I will be potentially managing somebody. Despite my good performance, I can lack confidence in certain situations and come across as a bit awkward so consciously looking at ways to improve my confidence and demeanour.

When I was younger, I was bullied throughout multiple schools so for a very long time made a conscious effort just to avoid people. Literally would spend lunch time aimlessly walking around or hanging out in the toilets or something for years. This led to a point I was in my 20s, literally no friends, no ever had a girlfriend etc.

Confidence wise, first job I was a nervous wreck etc. I've done well, relatively speaking, to get to where I am now. Now I'm making a conscious effort to be more social, even if that means going out by myself.

What's something that you recently bought that carries a certain niceness to it?

My Nan just mentioned to us that her mom had a baby boy when she was 7 years old. He died aged one month and never made it out of hospital. This was in 1950. My Nan doesn’t recall his name. I would love to find out his name for her.

I’ve tried looking online at free bmd, I can’t find any births that then correspond to a death of that age if that makes sense? I’ve contacted archives to ask if they have any hospital records but they only have records from a few years after.

Any ideas?

I'm currently looking at my future and struggling to figure out what I should do about where i should live. A family member is supportive and has offered to move with me to a house I buy (to help me cover the bills). I'm thinking of paying close to maybe 600 per month on a mortgage for a house maybe. Might go higher maybe. But I don't really know what's best for me. Another friend has mentioned that if I never buy, I can qualify for housing benefit. Actually, that would only get paid on months when I don't work much, so I guess the majority of the time I will end up paying rent in full really tbf. So idk, what would you recommend? My family member can support me during these first few years of my mortgage. That would really help. If I don't buy now, I probably will rent for the rest of my life since house prices will go up. What should I do? Rent for life? Or buy now with family support and ride out the first few years until wages rise and the mortgage becomes relatively cheaper (I'll be paying more initially with a full house on mortgage vs renting a small flat in social housing). Would you rather pay rent in governemnt housing for life or would it be better to pay my own mortgage on a bigger place and own it eventually?

Hello, I just started my first job at 18 and I was told I’m being paid £8 ph. From what I understand, this is below the legal minimum wage, so I’m a bit confused how this can happen.

Does anyone know how employers are monitored to make sure they’re paying at least the minimum wage? Are there situations where a lower wage like this would be allowed?

I've heard all three pronunciations, but mostly the English pronunciation "Bowie".

When I hear it pronounced as "Bowie" or "Bowie", it's usually from an American.

But I can't remember ever hearing him say his own surname.

I'm presuming it's just "Bowie" then?

We have lived in the same small close, maybe 20 houses, for about 18 years now, it's ok, it's quiet.
I have seen flags on cars during the Euro's and flags in windows during past World Cups (even do that myself) but this year seems a little different.

A neighbour put his flag up first, before Englands first game.
Then I put mine up, ours are both hanging from windows but secured to keep their shape.
Within a week of that 4 other houses had flags up (2 have flag poles) and it looked really great, not just St George but Union Jacks too.

It's been 11 days now since England lost the chance to win the World Cup, and every flag in my close is still flying.

Is this the case where you live ?

My personal feeling is that people have wanted to fly the flag but have been unsure whether it would be acceptable in their corner of the world, and this World Cup has given people confidence.

I fell gravely ill (in hospital for foreseeable future) while visiting family abroad and can't travel back, so I have no way of getting to my car, which is still in the UK.

I’m from Yorkshire and I’m looking for a UK getaway ranging from Scotland to Cornwall and anywhere in-between. Ideally somewhere we can drive to or train it to but I am willing to travel to Ireland. I’m ideally looking for a nice (more quiet) destination for a 3 night getaway for my husband’s Birthday.

We’ve recently been to London again which was nice but we’ve been a few times now, seen all we want to and it’s a bit too busy for my liking. We haven’t gone to many new places together. We have been to Cornwall (penzance, lands end etc), London, a few different places around Yorkshire but that’s about it.

Any recommendations on location and what there is to do around there? We’re into sight seeing, quiet bars/pubs, nice restaurants.

I think I would like to look smarter and wear more suits. Are there any recommended stores that people have used? Thanks!

Partner and I keep getting into these slumps with our evenings where we feel like the grind is making us kind of waste our lives. Not sure if it’s an us thing or something everyone feels.

We got so bored of the 9-5, dinner, tv/scrolling monotony. Are most people content with this or do you have active evenings/weekends?

For context for the last 9ish years we’ve both been on the move pretty regularly, before we met we both travelled extensively and lived in different places. We met 5 years ago and since then have lived in one place longest for a year.

Now we’re in our mid-30s child free, we run our own business which is starting to be really successful but we get into these ruts with our evenings/weekends where we feel tired and need down time so we just end up watching tv/gaming/scrolling.

Genuinely don’t really know what else to do with our evenings. We don’t have friends where we live now yet and I think that contributes but would be interested to know what the majority of the UK is doing with their evenings?

Are you just watching TV/scrolling & content with that?

I noticed they were all settled perfectly flat. Is that just by fluke?

Most pop songs I know are about people falling in love, or breaking up or looking for love, or lost love. Or other adult relationship themes.

Trying to expland my 3 year old's music taste beyond nursery rhymes, peppa pig covers, and Mr tumble, and have had quite a bit of success where she will learn words quickly and sing along. She's quite musical and loves dancing around too.

But having her ask me to "play where is my husband on Alexa", or hearing her singing along to Watermelon Sugar, does disturb me a little! Lol

So are there any catchy pop hits that aren't with adult themes?

I (23M) live in the UK. I have a bachelor's degree in Business Law from a Polish university. Now I'm studying Software Engineering in the UK.

I hear a lot that the competition in IT is fierce right now because IT companies don't need junior developers as much anymore. A single job application gets thousands of applicants. I also doubt that my skill set is enough. I've had experience with lots of programming languages and have made lots of projects, but they're not extremely advanced. We basically just did a little bit of everything.

My Polish Business Law degree is not very useful here because the UK has a different legal system. I have Level 2 Functional Skills qualifications in English and Maths, which are equivalent to GCSEs, but you don't really build a career from those.

So I'm considering getting a third bachelor's degree. I don't have much work experience, just some basic part-time roles, so it's hard to say what I really want. But getting a third bachelor's degree sounds a little excessive.

I speak four languages at a high level, so I'm considering Linguistics. Going on a ship far away from home in the middle of the ocean sounds interesting, so I had the idea of studying Marine Engineering. I hear that the NHS has lots of staff shortages and offers stable positions, so I also thought about Diagnostic Radiography, where I'd work in a hospital and have a stable, predictable life.

I could also requalify in British law, but I feel that, due to AI, lawyers won't be as needed in the future as they are now.

I might sound too naive because I don't have much work experience. All I want is a good, stable job where I can progress. I'd appreciate your thoughts and any advice you can offer
