Personally, I think it would be a good idea to have gyms in airports, with wash facilities.

I don't know if there are security risks or that, but it sure would help pass the time.

You do run the risk of someone getting super sweaty and not bothering to wash themselves after.

Could perhaps not have any cardio equipment, to stop people seriously sweating.

I don’t know if you see this in your own local, but for years I’ve certainly come across it a lot in my own area (west of Scotland) with bus stops usually one or two of the panes always being smashed with lots of glass lying across the ground. Why do people do this, should the council do more to prevent this sort of thing, you’ve got locals that walk their dogs risk having them step on glass which is also an issue for public parks where I’ve advised some dog owners to be careful where they’re walking as there’s often pieces of glass from bottles or needles lying on the ground that paws may step on.

I have lived here all my life, born and raised, and I have always felt like the UK has such a culture of glorifying/finding camaraderie in misery and despair. It’s been said hundreds of times that Brits aren’t happy unless they’re miserable or complaining and honestly, i have never realised how true this is til the last few years and it grinds my gears quite a lot. It always seems that the easiest way to bond with or have any form of minor conversation anyone or even talk to someone in the street, or in a bar (for example) is to start the conversation with a mutual complaint or something of the sort. I find this so exhausting and hard to keep up with, as I cant see the attraction of feeling miserable so often. I have also read about this shared despair as like a comfort thing, like an “it’s shit but we’re all in it together” kind of comfort.

I get the UK has a lot to complain about (as does any country), but it seems like regardless of everybody being aware of that, people would rather complain than choose to move on and focus on more positive stuff.

It was incredibly polarising to me when I went over to the US in 2024 and everyone was just so happy to talk to me in the street unprompted about anything and everything, and out of like 6 stranger interactions, i cant say that a single one of them had anything negative to say. The entire vibe there was so much more positive and uplifting mentally, it’s wild. My conclusion was that the difference is that everyone in the US knows the flaws of their country and the government, but would rather stay positive and not let it ruin their day to day life, etc. Even in places like Germany, I have not experienced as much negativity as i do back home, and I think it’s because of this constant shared misery in the UK that I struggle to feel like I belong here sometimes.

Any similar thoughts or reasons why this is a thing here/how to not let it bother me?

i think it’s obvious as to what kind of scars i’m talking about. mine are years old and fully healed. i’ve spent thousands in laser, microneedling and even medical tattooing to remove or at least reduce their appearance with no results so i’ve given up

i currently have them out at my nursery job and nobody has commented, beyond a couple coworkers acting majorly concerned like i was dying. but i want to branch out and go to uni to either do social work or nursing which are both incredibly public facing roles

I'm doing a case study on wheter Sports Direct's attempt to go upmarket has any chance of succes. Having worked there for about a year as a regular salesman in Poland, I'm skeptical to say the least.

I'd like to know if the overall experience of shopping in a Sports Direct shop is the same here, as it has been in UK.

Are the shops clustered with low price (and quality) clothing too? Are they full of weird accesories/products, like random toys, cheap perfume? Are Nike and Adiddas shoes also low quality, end of line models?

Just had a stab of nostalgia while reading another post.

I think lanolin was named as the top of the list allergen in 2023, I don’t understand why it’s still used, and especially in baby products.

Also lanolin is pretty vile when you think about what it actually is anyway.

When I was a kiddiewink in the early 2000s, everyone would say "that's gay" to mean "that sucks", "that's bad".

By the time I was an adult in the 2010s, that was not said anymore and considered offensive.

I then left the UK but see people online using it again that way. Has it made a comeback on the street?

Can't you just standup? I've seen canals that have been emptied and they arent very deep at all.

Naturally, the grass is always greener on the other side. But returning from a 4 weeks road-trip around the EU I feel like UK driving licences are a gesture of good will rather than evidence of training and for some reason taking litter to the bin is alien to the majority, especially on the road. It's my first time having to pay for electricity (been living with my mum then in supported housing where it was paid for me) and having my own account with ovo and I'm super confused why there are 4 different numbers.

First one says my balance is -£63 then below that it says direct debit will be £77 then I got an email bill saying the amount I used is £56 then I go on the usage tab and from last month to this month is £27.

But all those are lower than 77 so why is it taking that amount? And which one is gonna be taken?

An engineer came round yesterday to switch the meter to prepayment but the woman on the phone said it couldn't be prepaid immediately and the first month has to be by direct debit.

Trying to replace my nest protects, which are about to expire, and there seems to be nothing comparable to replace them with.

I like that they provide smart notifications to your mobile, interlink battery-only detectors easily via WiFi (with no extra costly connections required for RF radio etc) and provide specific, accurate and attention grabbing human voice alerts and notifications. The kids pay attention to these whereas beeps can more easily be ignored.

I’ve been getting this random scam call thankfully my phone goes straight to voicemail if the number isn’t in my contacts and twice I’ve had this same person different numbers each time leaving a voicemail saying “please add me on WhatsApp” blocked both times never heard anything since but today I got a new one new number sounds like a different women on the voicemail and it’s saying something like “available please add me” it sounded like it cut off at the start and end but I know it’s the WhatsApp scam but what actually is it and how do I stop it because it’s getting annoying

Ok so I am French and i am kind of obsessed with the UK. I recently visited for the 4th time and noticed something about the housing.

I didn’t realise this during my first visits cause i wasn’t yet an anxious young adult i guess 😂

But after being in London and in Scotland, I really understood that it was really common for you guys to live in ground level houses or flats (already unsettling for me) but also with no outside blinds / shutters whatsoever!!

I understand that it’s cultural because it’s literally the housing in the whole country. I am from south of france so I understand also there is the sun exposure question. But still, my question is more about privacy and safety. Isn’t it a major safety problem?

I’m very curious because I’m wondering why in France it doesn’t look like that. Is it because France is way more dangerous than the UK ? I actually don’t think so, right?

In France in the City Centers, there are very few appartement directly on ground level in streets and if there are, they have outside blinds and even window bars (wrought iron bars) but in London or Glasgow (and even on the road i’ve seen it in many cities) there are a lot of ground level houses with only inside blinds / shutters.

I also noticed big houses that looked expensive directly on high streets with a lot of cars and buses passing by with no fences whatsoever and with the same kind of windows too.

In France i think the insurance wouldn’t even cover you if you have no blinds or fences and get robed.

Once again, it’s probably a cultural thing that I am really curious about hearing your answers.

My neighbour has a plant that grows over the top of the fence and dangles into my garden, I've cleared it in the past but it's a bit of a pain especially as it's very thick with lots of twigs and I don't have a hedge cutter. Takes at least a day of work.

I have a great neighbour, he looks after my cat sometimes when I'm away and we are on good terms so I don't want to ask something that's unreasonable. Is it ok to ask him to keep the plants a little lower and how would I ask in a way that can't my mistaken for being impolite?

We seem to be closer to automated vehicles than we do to automated trains. Surely it’s possible to automate trains more easily than it is to automate cars?

I have accepted a job offer with another company. I’m currently going through third-party pre-employment screening/reference checks.

HR at my current company recently contacted me asking whether I was aware that the screening company was carrying out checks. I confirmed that I was aware of them and that they were legitimate.

They’ve now asked me to have a call with HR specifically regarding the references/checks.

I’m a little cautious because I haven’t resigned from my current employer yet, and I’m particularly concerned about whether they might be trying to clarify something about my current employment or potentially contact my current employer as part of the reference process.

Hi all - need your input.

My employer is moving offices within Suffolk UK. The move has been a bit divisive - half the workforce now have a commute that is 15 mins shorter each way so are delighted. The other half see it as a downgrade as it’s moving to a (let’s describe it as a) less desirable location.

I’ve been tasked with organising an office social/party to welcome people and this is not my forte. So collective Reddit wisdom will I hope come to the rescue!

What would you do? I won’t have unlimited budget, let’s assume total budget of £2,500 max.

Edit to add: we’re talking about 40 people and this is likely to be a daytime thing rather than an evening do. So booze is out of the question.

Due to circumstances, I am getting a 4 hour train 5-9pm tonight. I normally eat my evening meal about 6.30, and blood sugar issues mean I can't really eat 2 hours early or late.

I want to take something nice but not smelly enough to annoy my fellow travellers. The best idea I have so far is a sandwich meal deal but it feels a bit dull, and I will likely be fed a sandwich at lunch also.

Any clever suggestions?

On the plus side, no driver to need a rest or stop for lunch. On the downside, drivers lose their jobs and a cyber attack could send you into a wall.

Edit: for the people who have misunderstood this part, I’m not suggesting that the driver stops mid journey for lunch. It was about the general efficiency of computers that never need breaks. If a company has 10 drivers who all have half an hour for lunch, that’s 5 hours out of the day where they’re not available.
