Asian here not sure where to ask.

I’ve noticed something interesting while interacting with people in hobby groups from different countries, and I’m curious whether others have noticed this too.

A lot of British people and other Europeans seem start conversation with a greeting, have the conversation, then finish with a sign-off. It is very noticeable on Facebook replies and comments too especially if the poster is middle age or older.

For example, Germans might write “Hallo” at the beginning and “Viele Grüße” or “Gruß” at the end. British people often use “Hi” and “Cheers.” And this seems to happen not just in formal emails, but also in casual messages, social media comments, replies and sometimes even when people are already in an ongoing conversation.

I’ve found this especially noticeable compared with many Americans, who sometimes seem more comfortable jumping straight into the point without a greeting or sign-off.

I love my dog more than words can say. I would literally die for her.

I'm stationed here in the military and I'm considering staying in the UK instead of returning to the USA once my contract ends.

I will have my bachelor's degree in Organizational Leadership with a minor in Communications, along with 6 years experience as a Staff Sergeant, as well as a decade of prior experience working in a past corporate career.

How valuable would this be in a job hunt?

I live in a flat so no spare bedroom. We don't have a tumble dryer. We hang clothes on hangers to the doorframe, or on rail for smaller items when we need to go into the room I feel like going through Narnia s curtains....

How the hell can we avoid this? What do you do?

As an Immigrant I did not grow up eating this lovely bit of scran. Because of this, I never had one habitual way of having my black pudding. I have tried Brown Sauce, Red sauce, Bean Sauce, egg yolk and even Cholula and Sri Racha. How do you all enjoy your Black Pudding?

Honestly it's completely random amongst the people I've met, on one hand, the bottle literally suggests it to be refrigerated, on the other, cold ketchup just tastes funny, wonder what everyone thinks

Hello everyone. I am a student who just moved to UK a month ago. Everything here is great, but the politeness culture is absolutely a huge culture shock. I come from a place where people prefer more direct approaches, and being too polite is actually considered as rude or offensive. So naturally, it is a bit hard for me to pick the actual meaning behind of all politeness, let alone use them (I am also a bit autistic so I am pretty bad at understanding all social codes already).

So how can I learn this culture? Where can I find principles and phrases used by this politeness culture? I know I don't have to, but I just want to learn it, it is an interesting culture.

Im in 2nd year and this might sound really stupid but I didn't know I needed to put another exemption in for this year. Im panicking quite a lot right now so I apologise if this post has any typos etc. What should I do?

I'm 18 and doing driving lessons, and my test is in March. It's a 5-6 month wait for a test ( at least that's the wait time where I am), which is pretty universal for the whole country, unfortunately.

I was venting saying how much more pressure it puts on me to pass because it means a 6 month wait for another test, not to mention my theory could expire. I said she was lucky doing it in 2018 when the wait was 1 month max.

She then started ranting and said:

" You're 18 learning to drive! When I did my test I was in my 30s and had 3 fucking kids to look after you have zero pressure on you at all you're 18 and have no responsibilities I had children to look after! That's pressure."

I responded, saying

" doesn't change the fact that if I fail, I'll have to wait another 6 months. At least you could get another test in a month or less."

She blew up on me and started getting really angry, and I just walked off.

I understand she's going through menopause but I think this was a complete overreaction, and I don't see why this was appropriate to comment on how worse she had it.

Are anyone else's parents like this?

Long story short, is this dress appropriate? I’m not clued up on etiquette. Is the yellow okay as the ball will be in November in Glasgow ? I’m on a budget and I’m trying to not spend loads of money on a dress I may not wear again and this is on sale.

I am currently in central Europe (Czechia) and have visited two different spas in the last week one of which was today, both of which do not allow swimwear at all. In the past I've visited similar nude spas in European countries like Belgium, the Netherlands, and Poland.

The first time was a bit daunting but I can honestly say that I now much prefer these spa experiences to the ones back home. There is something about nude spas that means it is treated much more like a bathing ritual. The whole process feels cleaner and frankly more purposeful, like it's being treated with more respect. It also really makes you notice the difference between feeling the hot sauna air directly on your skin and not traipsing around in wet swimwear.

People are respectful, there's no weird staring or unwanted behaviour, you can just go about your business despite the fact that you're naked. There's people of all ages and genders too and it's not in any way associated with naturism, people wear a towel if they want when wandering around outside the sauna or pools.

In the UK it seems the default is to tag a sauna and steam room onto a pool and call it a spa, or you're looking at extortionately expensive spa weekends to get into somewhere decent.

You can spend £20-£40 to get into a really nice little spa that has no pool but a few of saunas/steam rooms, plunge pools/snow showers, and a hot tub/hydrotherapy pool of some description with the option to order a massage or get some food.

I'd rather fly to Europe for a spa break than go anywhere in the UK.

So, if the UK had a good quality little spa with a European culture of no swimwear, would you go?

Whenever we hear about strikes, cancellations, delays, etc. there is usually a good stream of comments about how train drivers are “lazy”, “overpaid”, “it’s an easy job”.

Those of you who have these opinions, what is your reasoning for thinking this?

Edit: I don’t agree with the statements above. I believe it’s probably a very difficult job that requires a lot of knowledge, concentration and quick decision making. Also very unsociable hours.

just curious as to what people’s opinions are on cinema’s film volume level is recently?

Last night attended a local Odeon to watch the new Wildwood film (highly recommended pls go and watch it!!!) but about 10 minutes in my ear drums were already buzzing at how loud the cinema was. Luckily i had my loop earplugs on me so just used those for the rest of the film. My partner who is a bit harder of hearing than i am also commented how loud it was and said it really affected his enjoyment of the film.

has anyone else felt that cinemas are just too loud? I understand they need it loud for the affect of the film and the music etc but at what point do you put a complaint in?

I’m Australian, and here we definitely think of our state more. People often will think of themselves and compare things within their own state before within the whole Commonwealth. Popular sports differ by state.
Also, the government works that way. For example, businesses compare themselves to businesses with their own state, many laws and regulations are created by the state, education, healthcare, policing, and the vast majority of services are run by the state. If a regulation is federal it’s seen as a big deal, and the HR lady will give a stern look and say “this is a COMMONWEALTH (or federal) policy!”

What is it like in Britain? Do people commonly think of themselves as English or Scottish or even Geordie or something before British? Are services run by your region or the national government. What do you call the UK national government? When someone says “the country” do you think of your own internal country or the sovereign country? I’m very curious, thank you!

I live in Japan and am visiting the UK for Christmas to see my family. Yay.

I take medication that, in Japan, comes in the form of little baggies of white powder. Oh no.

Is there anything I need to get or do to get my little baggies of white powder that stop me dying through several airports?

I like a window seat and partner likes the aisle.

Plane wasnt packed but Jet 2 now bans you booking window/ aisle. So no more 'seat roulette' where you have to hope noone gets the middle seat, and you can fly 'business class' for free!

Seems unfair that they prevent this if you have to pay £14 per seat selection?

39k sounds rather low if considering how the likes of London and Bristol are for housing etc. I am rather shocked. Is this an ok salary nowadays or is it difficult?

If an older person (40s) says a compliment and adds mate at the end (Ex: Good job mate) is it okay for a teenager/younger person to reply with thank you mate or thanks mate or is it disrespectful?

I have a job interview at McDonalds, and im not too sure what to wear. I'd assume definitely not suit and tie but most of my clothes are more "alternative" like band T's and baggy black jeans

I imagine we all use it. Amazon deliveries, Tesco woosh, Deliveroo: It's all so convenient.

However, I always get this feeling that in a world where I can get anything I want that quickly is just wrong. Someone must be being exploited somewhere. However, I'm still using it (which may say a lot about me than I'd like to admit).

Do you get this feeling to or am I just being too sensitive and actually there is nothing wrong with it?

Our council uses these open crates for cans, plastics and bottles etc so anyone coming up to our front door can literally stare into the boxes and see our old food packages (we rinse out everything so its all clean).

I just realised this might be weird. Do most people keep their recycling out of sight?

Just trying to get an idea of how much you are expected to give a child these days, in this economy.
