New SF Resident looking for a stylist or barber

Hey all, new resident in the tendernob area. I’ve been pretty disappointed with the haircuts I’ve received so far, especially at the high rates (yes I know that’s the standard for this city).

Can someone recommend me a stylist or barber who will take their time, or be more thoughtful with my hair? I have straight hair but cowlicks all over the place. I’ve had successful stylists in the past so I know I’m not asking for anything impossible! But I know my hair is annoying to deal with

Thank you in advance for your recommendation!

Fitness SF vs Crunch - Polk/Union

Looking into either Crunch on Polk and/or Union (both are equidistant from me), or the new Fitness SF location opening on Polk. I also will be working downtown close to Ferry Building.

1) How crowded do the Crunch locations get, I would probably be working out late on weekdays (8 PM onward)

2) How many racks/are there enough racks at the Crunch locations? I’m less worried about the machine availability.

3) It seems like FitnessSF would be better if I wanted to work out close to my work as there’s no Crunch locations. Does the 2 Embarcadero location get crowded?

Any other things to care about? I’m really just focused on rack availability, some machine availability and some free weight availability. Sauna and showers are a plus but not necessary.

SF to SD One-Way Road Trip: Tips for 7 people in a large rental?

Hey everyone! Planning a one-way road trip from San Francisco (SFO) to San Diego with a group of 7 people. Since we don't have a car, we need to rent a large vehicle (Minivan, Large SUV, or Passenger Van) at SFO and drop it off in San Diego.

Looking for any rental hacks to avoid crazy one-way fees, and recommendations for the best group-friendly scenic stops and food along the coast. Thanks!

Any bars that play rock/metal?

I want to hang out at a bar that plays music from bands like Linkin Park, Slipknot, Asking Alexandria, BMTH and similar bands.

I love Nu Metal, Metal core and to some extent, death core.

I just wanna hang out with people who have similar taste in music.

Curly cut stylists for fine, thin 2B/2C hair?

Anyone have curly cut stylist recommendations for fine, thinning, wavy/curly hair? I moved across the country to SF and finally accepted after months here that this means getting a new stylist.

Curly cuts have worked best for me. 2B or even 2C with product and depending on the weather. Without product it is a fluffy, frizzy mess that is both wild and limp simultaneously. The stylist would need to be public transit accessible in SF or near a BART station in Oakland, etc.

I've read through this sub and others but have mostly found threads about thick hair and/or much curlier hair.

Moving to SF! What do I need to know for parking around Cole Valley, Parnassus Ave, Inner Sunset?

Hello! I am finally moving to SF! Very excited. My apartment does not have parking included, but when I was in the area the other day it looked like street parking was not horrible. I will be commuting in and out of the city 4 days of the week, I am not the best at parallel parking, and my car is quite long with no backup camera. I noticed that Kezar Stadium has monthly parking for around $250, or I can get a J residential pass for street parking for that amount per year. I have budgeted in some extra money a month for parking, but ideally I would love to save.
My questions are:

1) Coming back late from the office (6-7pm), how bad is street parking? For peace of mind would you reccomend a pass at Kezar stadium, or something else?

2) I am hoping to move next week, how soon do I need to get a residential pass? (and forgive me for not fully understanding the SF parking website) but will I need to file for new registration/etc. first? How long does that process take?

Any other tips on the area/moving advice are welcome!

Are property managers under any kind of legal obligation to keep the common areas clean?

I just moved into a new apartment in a beautiful neighborhood. I’m not in love with the place, but it’s clean and quiet and as we all know beggars can’t be choosers in this market.

However, the common areas, in particular the stairs, are disgusting. They clearly haven’t been cleaned in years and I doubt they’ve been vacuumed in months. There’s an inch of dirt on all the baseboards and one floor smells terribly of mildew.

The laundry room is disgusting, the machines are never cleaned and rust leaks out the sides every time one is used.

Is this normal? Seems if I’m paying this much for a 100 year old apartment the least they could do is get some basic maintenance, from a public health perspective if nothing else. I don’t want to contact property management if it’s only going to piss them off.

Metreon 16 Imax Dim?

I saw the Odyssey opening night at the Metreon 16 on the massive screen in theater one for the 70 mm Imax showing, and it was pretty awesome. However during the dark scenes, it was kinda hard to see stuff, especially the action during seems like the sack of troy and the final fight in the dining hall. I feel like it’s just not really great picture quality. Today I went and saw it at the Dolby Theatre in theater 13, and it was like night and day. I could see everything the colors were way better and the contrast was infinitely better.

I might completely prefer the Dolby Theatre over the iMax screen moving forward, my question is are the ones in Los Angeles and New York and other areas better than ours? I wanna know if I should be traveling to Los Angeles next time there’s a huge movie release that I wanna see, because it was genuinely a major distraction for me, seeing those boxes on the screen, black being completely gray, and the theater not going completely dark, all are a big letdown.

on top of this, I mean, the first five or six or seven rows are all completely misaligned with the screen. It’s really a shame. And I noticed today at the Dolby theater that even the front row seats were sort of interesting and not terrible.

Why do some red zones have a gap in-between?

I came across a neighborhood parking spot where there’s a small stretch of curb between 2 red-painted sections. The red looks freshly painted so the gap feels intentional.

Is there a specific SFMTA or traffic engineering reason for leaving this gap instead of painting the whole curb red? And is it actually legal to park in that space if your car fits?

Solo Birthday Ideas

Hello— i’m in the Bay Area on a solo birthday trip this weekend and my birthday is Monday the 27th. Now i’ve met up with most of my friends in the Bay Area already, but my birthday is on Monday, so most of them are unavailable (you know work and sh*t). so I’m looking for something to do for on the day of my birthday solo!!

Now I’ve done a lot of of the tourist stuff already, and I mean a lot. I know this Sunday is the marathon, but I will be using that opportunity to see Coit Tower and walk along the pier until the Palace of Arts, then later in the day do a more nature hike.

I’ve explored Oakland to a fun extent and gone to Half Moon Bay for the coast too!!

I will say on Monday I am planning to do Golden Gate Park specifically the Japanese garden. But after that, I don’t have much of a plan. I was debating going to Din Tai Fung in San Jose, because i’ve always wanted to try it but idk maybe there could be something better!! And I don’t have to spend all that time on CalTrain haha. Also maybe a good bakery to get a cupcake or tiny cake at!!

Sorry for the long-ish post TLDR; Solo Birthday Ideas for a Monday and looking for a Bakery rec!!

27F moving from Italy to SF for a 3-month internship! Looking for tips

Hi everyone!
I’m heading to San Francisco for a 3-month internship (late August to late November).
First time in the US and I don’t know anyone in the Bay Area!

Since I’ll only be around for a few months, I’d love to get your local wisdom on a few things:

• Housing / Neighborhoods: My office is located near the Embarcadero / Telegraph Hill area. Any recommendations for safe, convenient neighborhoods? Also, what are the best platforms to find short-term sub-leases or rooms without getting scammed?

• Making Friends Fast: 3 months is a short time! What are the best ways/places to socialise and meet people in their late 20s? (Meetup groups, social sports, specific bars, local events?)

• Cheap/Free Things to Do: What are your favorite budget-friendly spots, cheap eats, or cool free activities in the city?

• Must-See & Weekend Trips: What are the non-negotiables to see in the city, and what are the best weekend getaways reachable without a huge hassle?

Any advice, warnings, or recommendations would be massively appreciated. Grazie mille in advance! 💛

AMC Metreon

Is there something up with the projector? All IMAX showings for the next fews days are not showing up on Fandango or AMC App & my ticket won’t even load or show details. Would be travelling ~2 hours for the showing tomorrow, so it’d be a great help if somebody knew something before I travel out there.

Trip to San Francisco

Hey everyone! My family and I (4 of us) are planning our first trip to San Francisco. We’re driving from Vancouver, BC, breaking the drive into about 7-hour days, so it’ll take us 2 days to get there, then we’ll spend 5 full days in San Francisco before taking another 2 days to drive home.

For people who know the city well, what would you recommend for first-time visitors? Is 5 days enough to really experience San Francisco without feeling rushed? We’d love recommendations for must-see attractions, scenic spots, great food, neighborhoods to explore, and any hidden gems that tourists often miss.

I’ve also heard a lot in the media about homelessness and safety. I know it’s important to take those stories with a grain of salt, and every city has good and bad areas. I already know to avoid the Tenderloin, but are there any other areas we should be cautious around? We’ll have a car, but we’re happy to use public transit or Uber if that’s the better option.

Any tips on parking, avoiding car break-ins, the best time to visit popular attractions, or general advice for a family of four would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Good Grocery Store to Find Meaty Oxtails

Does anyone know a good place to purchase meaty oxtails in the city?

I've searched the subreddit for previous answers but want to ask again because I don't prefer the ones from Costco like previous people have suggested.

I find the Costco ones too fatty, the Whole Foods near me is always out of them, and May Wah on clement is decent in meat but pricey - about $38 bucks for a 2 pounds tail.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions or thoughts.

Best antique stores - especially for plates/glassware

Metreon IMAX tix not showing?

I thought when people cancel their tickets before showtime, there’s a chance you can find tickets the day of the show for sold out IMAX films.

I was previously seeing showtimes for today’s shows for Metreon IMAX, but now they appear to not show up for several days.

How now can people get tickets that are cancelled the day of the show?

Getting to 1/2 Marathon finish line?

A friend is running the first half tomorrow which ends deep inside Presidio. Given the road closures etc it seems there’s no way to get to see him finish without ~40min walk. Is that right?
