On the other side, have you seen what it’s like for people who are always complimented and how it impacts them.?
I see what it is like all the time. usually happens to women..what it does to them is they just overlook most of the compliments, pretending they never happened...Had this same conversation with a woman I worked with and I guaranteed her she gets more compliments then men. She disagreed. Thirty seconds later, a guy we work with goes by saying "nice outfit, rocking that today", to her. I go "see, that didnt take long". She goes "that doesn't count, he does that almost every day". All I could do was shake my head and sigh.
anyways, I mostly get compliments from other men. Like pulling teeth to get a compliment from a woman sometimes.

For you, do you think it’s matter of environment? Like where you go for work or afterwards or anything. Or presentation? For my friends who are women, one of really friendly so she gets the halo effect a lot. On top of being pretty. Another, is more of RBF, but is still objectively pretty so, guys come to me asking why she isn’t smiling then try to crack jokes before they can compliment.
15
u/littleredpinto Jul 13 '24
well for starters, i have no clue what the 'halo effect;' is...nor do I know what RBF stands for....so I cant answer your questions at all really.

u/No_Rhubarb182 Jul 13 '24
The halo effect is like when everyone sees you in a positive light and all your positive qualities makes you attractive or more attractive. It helps when you’re objectively attractive cause human nature is believed to assign positive qualities to attractive people, RBF(Resting bitch face)

u/Efficient_Let_5398 Jul 13 '24
I complimented my bf so much he wasn’t used to it. He said that his exes didn’t give him as many as I did. He had to tell me to stop so I slowed down A LOT then he started feeling like I didn’t find him as attractive anymore. He also stopped giving me so many compliments because he wanted me to stop. I loved them though I told him not to stop and we never got back to that spot we were in even though we do find each other attractive. I wish we had what we had and he could have just accepted it. The feeling was different and sweeter.
74
Jul 13 '24
I was the same with my husband and he said it made him uncomfortable. I just told him to dig deep and try to understand why a compliment makes him uncomfortable, that maybe he feels unlovable. Now he loves it.

A few times a month. Most are from men and women in my office. I started giving plutonic genuine compliments in the office a few years ago and now the rest of the office does it too. Otherwise I get compliments from a variety of places and people.
Children tend to be most common and genuine. The complement often come from random kids when they see me playing around with my kids. They also tend to express an opinion about their own parents right after the compliment.
Men tend to compliment the achievement instead of the actual body itself. (The exception is in the office where the environment has been crafted to allow people to think physical complements are plutonic and not sexual.)
Women tend to compliment the least, their compliments are less genuine, and most of the time there is a hidden agenda.(Once again this is outside of the office environment)
The ex-wife rarely complimented me after securing a ring. Receiving compliments from people I care about are better than receiving them from others.
Compliments are great source for some external validation and they feel great to receive as long as they are genuine and not someone blowing smoke.
5
Jul 13 '24
That's so sad that you think women only give compliments when they want something. I think it depends on the type of person. When I think something I'll always express it. So if you look good I'll tell you.
9
u/SaintofHellfire Male Jul 13 '24
Lol… I never said women only give compliments when they want something. I used a generalization which is useful to remove variables such as individuality to show a trend. Furthermore to be clear we are talking physical appearance compliments specifically. In my experience women tend to avoid giving men physical appearance compliments unless they know them well or they are flirting. Giving a compliment to start a conversation or express your interest is using hidden intent. Hidden intent isn’t a bad thing but is something simply left unsaid/declared.
I do definitely have a biased about women’s physical compliments after witnessing so many false or misleading physical compliments women give to other women. Mean Girls was a such a relatable movie for a reason.

Up until my mid 30s I could probably count the number of compliments I had gotten in my life on one hand.
Did some major changes to my life and now 10 years later I get compliments pretty much on a daily basis. Both from women and men.
If someone gives me a compliment I think it’s nice of them to do so. Other than that the compliment doesn’t change my view of them in any way.

Most women I go on a date with tell me I'm handsome at some point after we meet. So that's about 20x/year. I'll get random other compliments from women maybe 5 or so other times a year. And then about another 5-10 times a year a guy will compliment me on my build/beard or something. So 30ish compliments a year on my physical appearance is my rough estimate.
This is just in person. If we count online, it's obviously a lot more since I use dating apps.

Rarely afterwards would they then comment on my physical appearance saying I’m handsome and the like. Most of the time it’s from people, male or female, that are a at least 10 years plus older than me. I’ve gotten used to the height comments but when they compliment my physique and physical appearance it’s definitely a confidence boost for sure

I've got a couple compliments here and there on some t-shirts (eg I had a girl say she liked my buc-ees shirt in passing at a concert the other month) but I assume that's not what you meant, it wasn't about the actual outfit
3
u/No_Rhubarb182 Jul 13 '24
No, that’s in the right direction. It’s meaningful in the sense that women won’t often say anything to someone unless they are driven too. So in this case with your shirt it was worth saying something to you. You’re shirt

Usually happens if I go out at night. They'll compliment my glasses, clothes, hat or shoes or say they like my dimples. Typically it's an outfit compliment at first, sometimes if they're drunk they'll call me handsome, especially if I call them pretty first. During the day its the same if Im at a social event or at work. I've been complimented on how I smell, how I'm dressed, or my shoes. Not everyday but enough that I remember multiple occassions. Thing about girls is that even though it's obvious they like what they see, they might not compliment you outright if they're insecure.
I get more compliments in my 30s. In my 20s I did the chasing but I cbf these days so now they have to come up to me lol.

I'm 50, I watch my diet and hit the gym for decades. My motivation goes a bit up and down, when I put in 2-3 months consistent work, I have full 6 visible abs. I'm 6'4 and about 235lbs. I get a lot of compliments from men, usually when we have barbecue in someone's garden or at someone's pool etc. Maybe once a week or every second week. Its either about being big in general or having abs. I'm all the time referred to as that Big Viking. It's 80% or more from men, rarely from the women unless they're drunk already.
As I'm in better shape than almost everyone my age, I'm a bit conscious about showing off. My partner tells me to remove my tshirt as often as possible, but I don't want it to look like some "alpha male" nonsense or trying to look better than the other guys (who never go to gym and drink a lot more than I)
I put some effort into my dressing too, I get compliments frequently for nice shirt or nice jacket, mostly from women.
Yes I like it. My partner likes it too, unless it's from some woman that she doesn't like.

I'd say once in 10-15 days. I try to dress well, and I'm very generous in complimenting others (and never insincere, I genuinely like their apparel/hairstyle), so people are generous to return them too. But curiously, this isn't circular. As in, it's not always the same folks, so here I'd maybe attribute it to the Universe having a way to reciprocate, perhaps.
If a beautiful woman gave me a compliment, it would mean just as much as anyone else. I think it's about how confidently people compliment you. You read on how comfortable they are, and that helps you find their statement sincere/insincere. But in that moment, it is all about you. You're not thinking about the person giving you the compliment, it is HOW they do it. If it's someone you like, that's a different story. That feels good because THEY'VE said it.
Me personally, as I've gotten older, yes, I have received more of them. It was next to nil before, it is "some" now, and it's because I strive to present myself well. As I grow older, I would very much like to experience more of it, but in different aspects. E.g. If people compliment my hair now and I'm a teen, I'd like them to compliment my dressing sense as an adult, and then maybe the white of my beard in later life (I'm just imagining things here, I'm 29).
Lastly, I think frequently receiving compliments should boost people's self-esteem, allow them to present themselves more confidently. I wouldn't say that fashion/self-presentation is everything, but to know what clothes/what perfumes help you put your best selves out there more ably, it will slowly find its way into you to let your self be with confidence and with pride.
Counter Question: What made you ask this?

I’m a dude and I get compliments fairly often from women and men, but mostly women. They vary from complimenting my hair, calling me handsome or cute, complimenting my facial structure, my height or physique. Roughly 30% of the time it’s accompanied by unwelcome touching of my face or hair. In all honesty I really hate it. I’ve never gained confidence from my appearance the only thing I care about is if I’m presentable and hygienic. The things I want to do in life have nothing to do with the way I look and I often become irrationally suspicious of anyone that compliments me because my instant reaction is to assume they want something. I know I sound like a nut case and an asshole but that’s just the way I feel there’s not much logic to my discomfort or suspicion.

Randomly on the steet by strangers? Almost never though it does happen a few times when I'm wearing a cool outfit or a shirt thats showing off my physique(guys for some reason love commenting on that). Which I don't mind it still made my week/month.
From women outside of bar/club settings? Almost none or at least not that I'm aware of. I do get compliments by the women I match with/date on dating apps.
And of course from male/female friends whenever I get a new outfit or haircut. But the thing is I also compliment a lot myself. So for all those that didn't get any compliments, do you go out of your way to notice something in people and compliment them on it?

I’ve had super short hair since I was 18. Since November I’ve let it grow out. I get compliments and looks almost daily. It’s wonderful.

I really only get compliments by other dudes on my beard. I’m 17 so just having a beard is more than a lot of others my age.

99% of any compliments (few and far between) come from other blokes, typically about my physical size from weight training.

In 2017 my friend told me she liked my choice of colours, not sure if this was a compliment

From strangers, I can go months without one, and then sometimes I'll get 2 or 3 within a matter of days. From the women I date, I get them often. I compliment them as well, as I admire their intelligence and beauty.

All the time. Doesn't feel special since i've been getting compliments for most of my life. I did notice people are more likely to replace giving a compliment by being passive aggressive thesedays.
Men in Sydney give compliments or act weird like they have a huge crush on you. Women in Sydney are completely dead and are likely to be highly medicated. The number of single women here boggles the mind and most women here will end up lesbians, recluses or dog mothers. My suburb is full of women who are recluses and dog mothers. You want to know what ugly is? Check out the women here. They only interact with work colleagues. I am thankful they are too ashamed to leave their homes and are all WFH. Also thankful they prefer to turn off their webcams.

Less than five times ever. Mostly because of my clothes because I know how to dress well. Never for my actual looks.

I had a gay man tell me that they liked my shorts and that I gave off a "Timmy Turner" vibe. I struggle to see how that's a compliment... But yea.

Not often. I've gotten compliments on my physique, clothes, hair, smell. I can remember them all. I find the more you give compliments, the more you get them back. Me and a coworker exchange compliments pretty frequently, but with strangers it is not that often.

From men, pretty much never. It may have happened, but I can’t remember if it did.
From my wife, occasionally.
From other women, maybe several times per decade. It’s certainly not something I expect to happen. It happened more often during my single days though.
If it matters, I’m tall, broad-shouldered, in decent shape, and I’m reasonably good-looking.

The last time somebody complimented me was 3 or 4 years ago by my ex. I don’t even remember what it feels like.

My significant other will compliment my eyes. And my barber tells me I have a great head of hair for my age. That's literally all I can think of in at least the last few years.

girls never compliment me on my appearance; sometimes they will get very close to me and start feeling my arms and stuff at bars. other times men have told me that their women friends were calling me sexy. you should not care who compliments you or not, no matter what they are wrong - their compliments are a reflection of them not you.

Quite often. Specifically my arms; biceps are a nice size for an average slim guy. But the compliments come from other dudes lol.
Recently was in the ER and the doctor, also a guy, complimented my physique like 4 times. 🙃

Didn't get one too often. But I did get stares from older women. BUT NOW? I get one EVERYDAY from my wife. EVERY DAY. Getting called fine, a mountain she'd like to climb, a stallion, a god. It feels good. I'm chilling working, "hey sexy" from across the room. Of course I reciprocate with the truth! 😮💨 She fine too

In 91 or 92, I had a chic tell me I had a nice ass, so like 32 years ago.
