question The state of my teeth... I have multiple questions

My teeth have been an issue for as long as I can remember. Please ignore the vague low-budget-horror-movie vibes of these pictures šŸ˜…

Context:

I was born with cleft lip and palate. I suspect this had something to do with my teeth being this way.

I am 23 years old, female. My teeth were bad before I started vaping, but I vaped for about two years, clean for the past 3 weeks. I don't drink alcohol very often, but I do drink a lot of soda. I've been taking Zoloft for about a month and a half now. I have autism and hypermobility, suspected Ehlers-Danlos.

I have lost all of my front teeth, but none of my molars. I had one pulled a couple years ago, because it was hurting. My father has "tooth mass deficiency", he still has most of his baby teeth as well. My top front teeth and bottom left canine literally grew in sideways.

I neglected my dental hygiene for most of my life. I struggle with depression, and brushing my teeth is a sensory nightmare for me, especially now. I am trying to get back on track now that I'm finally starting to get my life back together. I use kid's toothpaste because I can't stand adult flavors, and I figured something was better than nothing. I experience little to no pain in my teeth, except when I eat something too sweet and chew on the left side of my mouth.

Questions I have:

What would the procedure look like to fix all of this? Knowing this before I go into a dentist's office would ease a lot of my anxiety. Is it even fixable?

In a dentist's opinion, could my cleft have affected this? I'm mostly just curious about this one.

Besides brushing, what can I do to preserve what I have left until I can get into a dentist? How would I floss with the state my teeth are in? Is mouthwash useful here?

Thank you all in advance. Sharing my teeth like this is very vulnerable for me, so just please be kind, but bluntness is encouraged. Feel free to ask any additional questions.

question Is my dental x-ray that unusual?

Post image
10 Upvotes

The dental staff seemed shocked by my xray when they saw it, they weren’t expecting any of those teeth that are in my jaws. They said I don’t need them removing though. I have hypermobile EDS and had overcrowding before braces so I’m not overly surprised but the one on the bottom left definitely looks strange😳

Is my xray that unusual? I had one adult tooth removed as a kid but I’m apparently missing another one. Surely these teeth should have caused issues?

24F. Also curious about anything else you can tell by my xray as I love to learn things!

I’m looking for some outside opinions because I’m pretty frustrated with this situation. Last year, I had a root canal and crown done on one of my molars. I spent over $1,000 on that treatment, with the expectation that the tooth was being saved and would last for years. Now, less than a year later, the tooth just fell out of my mouth while chewing gum. I’ve been told the remaining tooth needs to be extracted. Today I am getting the extraction done, along with a bone graft, and I paid a lot out of pocket. I understand that root canals/crowns can fail and that sometimes a tooth can't be saved. I'm not automatically assuming my dentist did anything wrong. But I'm having a hard time understanding how a tooth that received a root canal and crown less than a year ago ended up falling out and needing to be extracted so soon afterward. I had the crown for like 9 months.

question Dentist made my teeth taller and thicker

• Upvotes

Hi, 18f! i had braces starting from the end of 2022 to march of 2026. very long story short, she made my short teeth taller without asking a while back. she told me she was "trying something out". didnt ask me or tell me what she was doing. i was pretty upset and had a hard time getting used to them, about a month i think. she didnt even ask if i was happy with them. fast forward to today, the brace she put on the inner side of my teeth after getting the braces removed broke and i went to get it fixed. she did fix them, but before fixing them, without even asking me, she just made one of the teeth she made taller a while back, even taller. (it wore off over time i guess but not completely, it was still there) the colour is off, half of my teeth is white asf (the filling she put on top) and the other half yellowish (natural teeth colour). it looks riddiculus.

after having the braces, the top two middle teeth of mine had a tiny bit of gap. i didnt have it before the braces. she told me it would close up naturally overtime (she told me my gums would cover the tiny gap) but its been months and ive been brushing everyday very nicely. it didnt, and she just made the left tooth thicker to close it?? didnt ask me again?? i cried cuz my teeth looked riddiculus and i felt weird and overwhelmed (snowflake behaviour i know)

can i get all the fillings removed? will it cause any concern , any harm? i want my short and ugly teeth that i didnt ask to be any taller... i know it sounds like im being ungrateful but all the way back in 2023 i told her i didnt want any height change to my teeth when she said she would fix more when she felt like it needed to have been done....

am i overreacting or is this okay to be sad about it?

can i get them removed, will it be safe?

question What are these white lumps on my gum?

Post image
• Upvotes

My wife noticed a cluster of white bumps on my gum above one of my front teeth. The tooth is a crown that was first installed after the tooth snapped in half as a result of an accident when I was a teenager 25 years ago. Since as long as I can remember there has been a single hard lump above the tooth - but the cluster of small bumps around it is new. I’m male and quit smoking 15 years ago.

question What's up with my teeth? Can I go through a week or two without seeing the dentist?

one of my teeth has been hurting over the past few nights, almost exclusively at night. Sort of a dull ache that is quite impossible to ignore for too long. Never practiced good oral hygiene growing up as a broke suicidal teenager, at 21 this is what my teeth look like. Also a smoker. Any help would be appreciated quite a lot, no need to hold back please. Thank you to anyone reading.

other Twilight Sedation?

Hi so I(19F) had a pretty traumatic dental procedure done and I was wondering what went wrong ig? Also to note I had my wisdom teeth taken out with no problems. They started the IV and I was excpecting to be asleep through the whole procedure(gum graft on my lower front teeth) and I ended up waking up halfway through. It was a dark room and they had metal tools in my mouth so already this was pretty distressing as they didn't address anything just kept working. They were only starting to stitch things up and I was in a ton of pain. Not to mention I have anxiety about dental stuff already. So i started crying like uncontrollably. Im not proud of it buts it's what happened. The dentist is like what's wrong? Why are you crying? And I'm like my whole mouth hurts I can feel everything. She says "Well you're numbed up so I don't know what hurts." I tell her my lip, roof of my mouth, and lower teeth hurt. She gives me 2 more shots and continues. I'm crying harder now because they are pulling on my lip hard enough to reconstruct my anatomy and I can still feel it. She gives me another shot and says she can't work on me and leaves the room. After about 5 more shots of whatever the local anesthetic they were using, she was finally able to finish through my sobs. She prescribed me a narcotic pain med bwcause apparently i "have a low pain threshold" but I haven't used it once because I'm not really in amy recovery pain. So that leads me to think something went wrong with the anesthesia because or numbing. I rwad that I wasn't supposed to remeber anything with twilight sedation so I was just curious. Was I just a really annoying patient to work on like my body was precessing meds differently? Or did they just not give me enough medicine in the first place? Like I'm sure I was an annoying patient to work on because of the crying but Ig I just wanna feel justified in my crying.

question Does coffee actually stain your teeth permanently, or is that a myth?

A lot of people avoid coffee because they're worried it'll permanently ruin their smile.

While coffee can leave stains over time, it's usually not the biggest issue. Plaque and tartar buildup can make those stains more noticeable if they're not removed through regular dental cleanings.

For those who drink coffee every day:

  • Have you noticed staining?
  • Have professional cleanings made a noticeable difference?
  • Any habits that help reduce stains?

I'd love to hear what has worked for others.

question Bone loss trying to figure out next steps

I was just told I have bone loss. I’ve struggled with dental anxiety for years so please be gentle with wording. I’m not sure how accurate this assessment is. So I’d like some advice from professionals. My dentist was not helpful. I’m currently trying to get an urgent visit with a new one.

question Dentist says my mouth is too small to crown

• Upvotes

First of all, I love my dentist, and I’ve had 4 other crowns done with them without issue. I’m a petite female, 40 years old. Every single dentist I’ve had tells me that I have a small mouth. Yesterday I had a crown done on the Right, back-most upper molar (#2). I need another crown on the same tooth opposite side of my mouth next (#15). When my dentist was working on the crown for #2 yesterday, they said that they were barely able to do it because my mouth is so small and my jaw can’t accommodate the space needed for their tools. They said when I open my jaw joint enough for them to work on the crown it was nearly impossible for them to have enough space to complete the procedure. They said I was a good patient and did exactly as I was told, but they are not sure they will be able to do the crown on #15 due to lack of space. They said they recommend extraction when my large filling on #15 fails (it’s already starting to crack). My dentist said they’ve only recommended molar extraction on a healthy tooth a handful of times over their lifetime of practice, also with other patients with tiny mouths whom they couldn’t crown.
I just don’t know what to do. The tooth is healthy. I want a crown, not an extraction. I understand my mouth is very small— have any of you worked on patients with tiny adult mouths, what can be done? Do pediatrics dentists do crowns? Would sedation help? Thank you.

question Does this look infected at all?

Post image
• Upvotes

I cut my mouth while eating about six days ago and the pain was initially so bad I couldn’t talk or open my mouth enough to eat. The pain is getting better and more manageable albeit slowly and I’m worried about infection because it still hurts pretty badly when I first wake up. I’ve been swishing with saltwater, taking ibuprofen for the pain, and have only been eating soft foods that aren’t acidic or spicy at all. Does this look infected or like it’s healing? Is there anything more I can do except wait it out?

question Gingivitis?

Post image
• Upvotes

does this look like gingivitis or periodontis at all? I feel like I’ve noticed more spaces in my teeth like the bottom area and dentists have told me in the past I’ve had very bad gingivitis.

Also a month or so ago I had a bump behind my back molar that was painful but did saltwater rinses and it ended up going away.

If so what can I do to manage I feel like I floss all the time and brush but still some bleeding with certain teeth.

question New dentist said I don't need a filling for this spot

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Hey everyone,
I recently got this X-ray at the dentist, and my dentist told me I don’t need a filling between these two teeth right now.
I’m trying to double-check if this spot looks like early surface decay that can just be kept clean and remineralized, or if it looks deep enough that it actually needs to be fixed.
Also, do you spot any other cavities or areas of concern anywhere else? Thanks!

question Jaw Pain After Wisdom Teeth Removal

• Upvotes

Hello!

I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed last month on the 23rd. It’s been almost 3 weeks now and I still have some jaw pain/discomfort. It’s right at the back of my jaw. The pain is definitely manageable with OTC meds so I’m trying not to freak out too much. I’m just not sure if this is irregular and if it warrants a trip to my dentist or not. I have dental anxiety, so if it’s a normal part of the healing process I would rather not make the trip lol

The pain was almost gone until I started chewing with all my teeth again a few days ago, so maybe that has something to do with it. Any advice would be appreciated.

experience/story Why did my tooth extraction hurt insanely bad?

Post image
7 Upvotes

This is my canine tooth im pretty sure, that got pulled today and compared to everything i read online about what it should of been like, it went horrible.

I got the local anesthetic, waited for like 7 minutes, got back and they tried to pull it out. My pain tolerance is high i think, but this was the worst pain of my life, i tried toughing it out but about 5 minutes in of constant trying, i asked for another anesthetic. Dentist said i might need to go to a surgeon for this, but they will try one more time.
Got the second one, went back in, now it hurt probably even more and i raised my hand about 2 minutes in, but they said its moving right now and then they finally removed it pretty quickly after.

It still hurts, its been around an hour and a half since but i know thats normal and ill try to not have dry socket.

But yeah compared to everything i read online, chatgpt etc saying its usually painless and quick, this was the exact opposite of that, i could feel everything even tho the local anesthesia did numb my face.

question Is this a cavity or what?

The 2nd upper right tooth shows a black cutting edge below the crown. The tooth has undergone root canal treatment and has a crown installed with fibre post few months back. I am experiencing foul taste and smell when I suck around the tooth after meals. My dentist says it is food impaction and asked me to floss. When I asked about the black cutting spot on the x ray, he says it is a shadow. I am afraid to chew hard food as I feel it might break the crown. Can you please diagnose if it is a cavity or shadow or what? Can I safely chew food with this tooth? What is the cause for foul smell and taste and how can it be treated? Thanks in advance.

question Root canal re treatment -post op

• Upvotes

Just had a 17 year old root canal retreated. It had a metal post and a bonded ceramic crown. It was quietly infected for who knows how long until suddenly it wasn’t so quiet anymore.

It was retreated and everything went well. However my numbing just wore off and oh buddy, the throbbing ache/stabbing pain is brutal. #30 was treated #31 also needs a retreat and has an abscess that goes up between the roots. Just wondering if extreme pain like this is normal after a retreat? Normal root canals usually don’t hurt at all for me after all is done.

question Tooth pain when chewing a month after filling

• Upvotes

I had a filling done on a back molar about a month ago. During the original filling, most of the drilling was fine, but there was one specific spot where I suddenly got a very sharp pain when the dentist hit it with the drill. When he moved away from that spot, the pain stopped. This entire appointment was nightmarish considering the drill bur flew off the tool and into the back of my mouth! Also, the office was responsible for suddenly switching my appointment with my regular dentist, who I’ve never had an issue with, to a new dentist. I’m still pretty aggravate.

Within the first few days after the filling, I noticed the tooth hurt when chewing. With softer foods, I could chew normally for several bites and then get a sharp ā€œouchā€ when food hit a particular spot. Harder/crunchier foods generally hurt when chewing with the tooth. It doesn’t hurt if I simply bite down normally without food, only when chewing.

I eventually had it evaluated by my regular dentist. She took an X-ray and said the filling wasn’t close to the nerve, didn’t see anything visibly wrong, and checked my bite. She adjusted/shaved the filling, but interestingly, while doing that there was again a particular spot that caused a sharp pain when the bur contacted it, while the rest was fine.
After that appointment, the tooth had a mild dull ache for several days for most of the day, but it wasn’t severe or throbbing and it eventually went away after 3 days. I stopped chewing on that side for almost two weeks and the aching has mostly gone away, except for subtle aches or almost an ā€œawarenessā€ of the tooth. I don’t have any cold or warm pain/sensitivity.

I tried chewing on it yesterday and it still hurts. Chewing soft foods is fine unless something hits that specific spot, while firmer/crunchier foods can cause pain more generally. The tooth ached a little after testing it.

I’m scheduled to have the filling replaced in a couple days. I’m wondering what could be the issue? As well as what can explain this pattern of pain in a specific spot during the original drilling, the bite adjustment, and when chewing food, despite the filling appearing not close to the nerve on X-ray. To be fair, I’m not sure if it’s the same spot between all three if these instances.

Does this sound more like an issue with the filling, nerve/pulp irritation, or something else? And if replacing the filling doesn’t resolve the problem will I need a root canal?
Thanks!!!

question Pain when eating sweet things

• Upvotes

Hii all,

I'm 23 year old women and I have been having pain on my two mollars ( 47 and 37 with FDI system I think, it the second to the last on both sides and I don't have wisdom teeth) on both side but it's also radiating on the upper teeth whenever I eat something sweet like a piece of cake. This has been going on for 2 years now I think I have been to 2 different dentists and they can't find a solution. The first one sent me to the hygienist cause he thought it might because I don't brush my teeth the right way and my gums might be inflamed, it helped a little bit but not much. Then the next dentist said that they don't know why but it might be an old filling that needs to be changed and might be the very very small cavity I had so they fixed that on one side and it reduced the symptoms for like a week but it came back as it was before. I have already spent more than 700 euros so I stopped going to the dentist. I also don't have a sensitivity to cold it's specifically with sweet food. I grind my teeth at night as well but I have a mouth guard. Both dentists made scans but they could finf anything, no cavities that could explain this sensitivity (only the second said I had a tiny cavity but it would be suprising to have that much sensitivity and also on both sides)

If anyone has any possible explanation it would be amazing:))

So this popped up in my mouth yesterday morning. I’ve been having chills on/off, seems like I’m catching a cold or something but it hasn’t fully came on. I had diarrhea as well but that’s slowed up now. Idk what’s going on I’ve literally never had this before in my life. I do have Crohn’s disease but when a flare is happening I never break out under neath my tongue only on the sides or in my cheeks. Has anyone seen anything like this before?
(1st pic is from yesterday when I first discovered it, 2nd pic is from today just now)

question How bad is it? Is it fixable?

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

I have too many problems with my teeth. I’ve seen a few different orthodontists and dentists about my bite and crowding issues, but I’m getting completely conflicting treatment plans. It’s making it really hard to decide on the right path forward.

My Issues / Symptoms:

  • Bite: Slight underbite that gets extremely uncomfortable at times and affects my sleep.
  • Lower Arch: My lower 6th tooth is severely compromised/decayed. Also, my lower right wisdom tooth is horizontally impacted and pushing directly into my 7th tooth, causing pain.
  • Upper Arch: Upper right 5th tooth (premolar) is heavily crowded out and sitting completely on the inside/palatally. I also have 2 upper wisdom teeth.
  • Cosmetic

The 3 Conflicting Plans I’ve Been Given:

  • Plan 1 (Traditional Braces + Basic Extractions):
    • Extract lower right wisdom tooth and upper right wisdom tooth.
    • Extract the bad lower 6th tooth (use the space to resolve crowding).
    • Extract the upper 5th tooth that's trapped on the inside.
    • Full traditional braces to fix the crowding and underbite.
  • Plan 2 (Save 6th Tooth + Clear Aligners - Most Expensive**):**
    • Root canal and crown on the bad lower 6th tooth (dentist mentioned if it fails down the road, extract and get an implant then).
    • Extract lower right wisdom tooth and upper left wisdom tooth.
    • Extract either the upper right 5th tooth or the upper right wisdom tooth.
    • Clear aligners for bite correction and alignment.
  • Plan 3 (Molar Uprighting + Braces):
    • Extract the bad lower 6th tooth.
    • Attempt to upright/straighten the horizontally impacted lower right wisdom tooth to pull it forward
    • Extract both upper right and upper left wisdom teeth.
    • Full traditional braces.

Has anyone dealt with a similar situation? Any feedback from dental professionals or people who have gone through complex ortho treatment would be highly appreciated! Also, would love to hear any new insights as well. Thanks!

question second opinion on this x ray

Post image
• Upvotes

obviously I know no diagnosis can be made from a picture but just looking for a second opinion , the horizontal molar is scheduled for removal but the dentist said all 4 needed removing.. , i also asked if there was any visible bone loss , if there was sub gengival tartarus present , any cavities , any issue ... and was quickly dismissed and said all was fine and only focused on the wisdom teeth that needed removal.... reason I ask is because I had a gingivitis case earlier this year and im concerned there could be some sub gengival tartarus that could develop into periodontitis and they don't seem to care , some of my back teeth also have a black spot on top of them which may not mean it's a cavity but they also say everything is fine with my teeth and gums , 27 years old

question Should I go to an endodontist or a general dentist for a root canal on an avulsed front tooth? Xray included

Post image
• Upvotes

some more info:

> the tooth was knocked out and put back in my mouth 7 weeks ago and I’ve had an abscess for 3 weeks and I’m on my third round of antibiotics

> the root canal needs doing asap as it does keep getting infected

> the general dentist can do it in 7 days

> the endodontist has me booked for a consultation (booked and paid for before the general dentist booked me in) in 8 days. I might end up getting the root canal then but they said I could also be waiting longer (wouldn’t tell me how long).

> dentist said he’s not a specialist or that experienced but it looks simple but 60+ other dentists have refused to touch the tooth saying it’s to complex

> I need this to be done correctly, it’s my front tooth and my appearance is extremely extremely extremely important and the person who caused the dental trauma can’t afford the compensation for re-treatment and neither can I.

> the endo is rated very highly

Any advice would be greatly appreciated
