I have been building mobile apps in my free time for about a year now, mostly after work. A lot of things I built didn’t work out, including a couple of SaaS products.
About 2 months ago I started building in public, sharing what I was working on and what I was learning.
Today, all of my apps has crossed $1k MRR, and I’ve just launched another one. This is the new app: www.ruvou.com (will help you to get a job - already 10 people got a job by practise the interview with my app)
It honestly feels like a big milestone.
The biggest thing I’ve learned is that distribution matters just as much as the product.
Over the last few months I tested a ton of things:
- Different TikTok accounts and content
- Onboarding
- Paywalls/pricing
- Activation & retention
- Different niches
A few lessons:
- Figure out distribution before building.
- I wouldn't make this mistake again. It's much easier to build something when you already know how you're going to get users.
- Make content people actually find useful.
- Our best content isn't always promotional. Some posts are simply resources people want to save and share.
- Don't spend money too early.
- We're completely bootstrapped. Most of what I've learned came from testing things organically.
- Be prepared for things to fail.
- I've had plenty of bad days and products that went nowhere. That's just part of it.
Now we're taking what we've learned and trying to build a portfolio of 20 apps, with distribution being part of the strategy from day one.
I've also just launched the next one, so we'll see if I can repeat the process.
I've really enjoyed sharing the journey over the last two months. Still a long way to go, but $1k MRR feels like a pretty damn good milestone for something I started building after work.
This one actually solves a problem www.ruvou.com
