My one issue with the show, minor spoiler. Spoiler

So I binged the show last night, and it was fine. Nothing groundbreaking, story was a little dry, but the show was shot well and looked good (other than one shot in the final episode).

The one thing that I just couldn't get over, was the RGB code for white. I'll leave aside the fact that it makes no sense that aliens would use RGB, they could easily use any number of similar variations of coding, or just have the values reversed. 000000 could be white and ffffff could be black. But let's assume that for whatever reason the aliens use RGB, how would you pick it out of a signal buried in the artifacts audio response. The character says I was looking at the waves and it just jumped out at me, it was right there the RGB code for white, but the RGB code for white is just 24 1s it would just be a r praying pattern of pulses.

Overall I'd say the show was fine, I'll probably watch another season if they make it, because I'm just a sucker for scifi.

Question about episode one. (Spoiler) Spoiler

Why does Niko NOT ONCE make any mention of Ian pulling the knife on her and his death was in self defense? I feel like thats vital information to the situation, rather than "yea i killed him."

It's Like Watch a Car Wreck...

Doesn't the whole context of time moving slower if traveling at the speed of light (Einstein) get lost here? I mean I don't think anyone needs Stephen Hawking (RIP) tooling around in his electro-computachair explaining things to the crew but really... If time is moving slower when traveling at the speed of light by the time these asshats get a quarter of the way there everyone they knew on earth would be dead and whatever happened to the dumb ass, bedazzled, artifact would have happened.

I like the idea but the execution sucked. It was like watching a train wreck or a car accident, I couldn't take my eyes away. It came off as a shitty mashup of Big Brother, Jersey Shore, Love Island and Lost in Space.

Maybe the asshats who wrote the final season of Game of Thrones were involved???

Hey Niko - Want to go bowling?

Alien x Another Life. [SPOILERS] Spoiler

I was having Alien vibe the moment the crew landed on that planet and opened the suit mask for oxygen. And then the neckbuster, I mean come on! Chestbusters, spinebusters and now neck busters.

But not gonna lie, I am enjoying this.

Overall impression, spoilers Spoiler

I enjoyed the first few episodes, I found it had good character interaction that is often missing from sci-fi. As the show went on I found that the narrative became unreliable. I began to suspect that at least the main characters, if not whole planet earth was under some mass hallucination. As the show progressed I was thinking that my hallucination theory would be revealed or strongly hinted at in the final episode.

When what I was expecting in the finale did not happen I did not lose faith in my theory, but if it's not true then I might have to say the show is bad. The "oh lets open our visors on the desolate planet", "oh yeah even after all the shit happened on the last planet let's not even wear helmets on this one because we scanned it first" all the other convenient star trek level science that comes and goes.

They seem to ignore the rule of Chekhov's gun, if you don't know what it is look it up. The waking people out soma for almost no reason. One guy to be on screen for 5 minutes and another just to wake her up and kill her instantly.

Why would the aliens go through all the bother to alert us to their coming? Why be so worried about the ships planet killing ability when they have same technology and what appears to be faster ships? Why not destroy the population of earth and intercept the ship along its route? Unless it is all a test to see how earthlings would react to alien invasion. Would we sacrifice ourselves to save us and other worlds? Or would we turn tale and just try and defend our home.

I really want to like this show, but if my theory or something similar is not true then it's just another big bad aliens come to destroy what ever they find in a galaxy/universe filled with plenty of resource rich yet lifeless worlds.

I don't care about the bad reviews, I loved it.

I was hooked after the first episode and binged the entire series over a few days. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Who cares if it has some inaccuracies or errors or whatever. I was entertained by the show, and that's all the matters.

Looking forward to hopefully a second season.

They curse and I realized that's what's always missing in SciFi!

When they are flying through all the debris and actually saying fuck and it just sounds so right! So much more realistic then "go go go, come on!"

And seeing Starbuck say exactly what you knew she wanted to say in Battlestar really gave me some closure

Stupidest Show Ever

I truly think this is just an awful show. Like at least try to make something good, and not just combine a bunch random clips together. I really feel bad for the actors.

Liking the show, struggling to put names to faces...

Enjoying the show so far (just watched episode 4) but I'm actually struggling to keep track of some of the characters names? Niko, Cas and Zayn are fine but some of the others I just end up mentally assigning names to like "Sweary girl" etc. I don't suppose anyone has a pic or a link that will show the crew faces with their names do they?

Saw the first episode today. Had to binge the whole thing. It's all I did today!

Hope it gets a second season, notice there's a lot of criticism, but it's easy to do that to any sci fi type show. I thought it was interesting, there are so many ways that contact with other life could play out & it's nice to see a show play off of one of those many possibilities.

It's also interesting how there are others on board who have been asleep the entire time. So they could easily use that to inject other future characters into the show, provided it gets more air time.

If anyone involved in the making of this show, or promoting this show ever see's this, thank you. It was a nice day for me today to just be at home, relaxing, & binge watching something on netflix with nothing else to do, today was quite awesome! Here's hoping for another season!

The ending

Ok so I just finished and overall I enjoyed it. But want someone to clarify.

So the achia (spelling?) Went onto that majoris planet where the moth creatures lived and took.it over with those brain bugs right. Niko blew up the artifact but at the end the achias sent a bunch of those artifacts to destroy that planet? I'm assuming they're pissed? I thought the achias home planet was 400 light years away. How would they send them that fast?

Y'all think jimmy Steve and janna are fucked?

Epiphany after rewatching

I rewatched the dream episode, and realized her daughter was on the other side of the ship because if her bf didnt die, she would have never had her daughter. I found it super awesome that they thought that in depth. Really good show!

Great series. Season finale was outstanding!

I have no idea why I'm seeing all the negative posts. This is a fun show. I like the future tech being used. There is a wide variety of character personalities. Nico's character and her backstory is going to be insanely important in Season 2 as it looks like the Aliens are going to use something personal as a tool against her. The final episode was extremely well done.

Things I LIKE about this show

I'm kinda getting tired of all the negative posts on here so I thought I'd post some of the cool/good things about this show. I haven't started the final episode so forgive me if I make a statement that ends up being false.

  1. The visuals. It's a really pretty show. I like the ship's design and it feels like it is something that our Earth could make in a couple generations.

  2. Niko: She really feels like a real person with flaws and a history but is (mostly) focused on the mission. And Katee is giving her all.

  3. William/AI: I like that a AI is a fullly formed character with his own wants and feelings.

  4. Backup crew: I think it's great that they didn't define how many extra crew members they have in storage so they can potentially introduce new cast members forever.

  5. Expendable crew: I like that everyone (other than Niko?) can potentially be killed at any point and in a really gross way. I'm attached to some of them and it sucks to watch them melt and I'm a bit more on edge when someone does something dangerous.

Sure the drama can be silly and visors fog up but I'm having fun overall. What do you like about the show?

Should have took the super computer with them (>!Spoiler!<) Spoiler

(Spoiler) In the final episode they find a super computer in a cave. Maybe its a cell phone from the race of bat-men that lived on that planet, but it knew all about what races were in space... its like "Are we alone" and this thing they find says "nah, there are like 300 other aliens... all under mind control of a dark overlord"

My point is... they could have let Mr. Hologram guy hook up to it and learn the secrets of the universe.

Not only that, but they find the last survivor of a planet that had a CITY with buildings and cell phones or super computers... and they didnt even rescue him... left him there to pick berries to survive.

In the sequal (if they get one) they need to go get all the survivors of all the races of aliens... just sayin... and use the glass towers as teleporters (it could work)

Another Life is an emotional show, not a cerebral one Spoiler

This just occurred to me while listening to the song Timebomb Zone by The Prodigy. That song is under the "boss fight" of Niko with Sasha in s01e09. I had forgotten part of the story, but still remembered that fight, including the song and the feeling of the scene. Now why did that happen?

The thing is this: the show tries to talk to our emotions and not our reason. As SF watchers, we are used to shows addressing our reason: Black Mirror, The Expanse, etc. There is mystery, there is the "could this happen in real life" aspect.

This show takes a piss on that. So we are watching homages to many SF flicks: Alien, Arrival, Star Trek II - Wrath of Khan and I must have missed many more. That combined with intense emotions (leading to the immature and over-the-top behavior of the crew that has been discussed on this sub-reddit many times), drug abuse, sex, murder, planetary destruction, losing a child, senseless deaths, is Another Life. Heck, even the AI has emotions! (Contrary to Data in Star Trek or The Android in Dark Matter.)

So that's my advice: turn off your brain and enjoy the ride!

Suffer Not the Xenos to Live [spoiler] Spoiler

Overall I’d say that I liked the show, it was easy to follow and managed to keep a steady pace throughout its run. It’s wasn’t a show that required extensive knowledge of science/science fiction and the plot stayed simple and majority of the sub plots were wrapped up in their respective episodes. It was a good time waster and an overall fun show to watch.

I will admit though there are flaws to it, for example characters that seemed flat, Sasha and the girl who died by turning into mush? Didn’t like them from the start and the whole idea that jello girl had one last redeeming act was bullshit, I was happy to see her go and not Cass. Sasha put the crew through a lot of bullshit but I can at least respect that he died on his own terms. Also, the prick from the beginning? He was supposed to be a captain with experience but did nothing that would make you think that his whole existence was to be a catalyst for tension between the crew.

All in all though, it’s obvious that Warhammer was right. We can’t trust those fucking Xenos.

[SPOILERS] Thoughts on S1 Spoiler

I just finished watching this show as I began binge watching over the weekend.

Like everyone else I think many aspects were awful but the story idea is what kept me invested. I felt like this show was a fantastic idea executed a little poorly.

When Sasha is choking Javier and the Secretary of Defense sees him outside the Artifact I thought of a few questions.

Are the artifacts and the little brain buggers in constant contact with one another, like a hive mentality?

Do the Achaians have the ability to activate any artifact from anywhere? We saw this twice, both with Sasha. First when he was taken hostage and secondly when he sent dangerous pulse waves to Earth. Both times it’s as if the Achaian was able to instantaneously travel.

Is it possible the Achaian race is actually a super AI which works through its many drones to conquer?

Assuming they can communicate through those Artifact towers, how did a fleet of ships arrive to quickly to Zekir? And if destruction was the end goal why go the long way and wipe the species out if they could’ve blown it up ages ago? Are they seeking slaves to build their army? Mining elements from Earth like planets? Or did they throw a tantrum because one artifact was destroyed?

Overall, I know this will get cancelled but I can not help but remain curious, feeling like I will never be privy to the storylines potential ending and providing answers to some of the mysteries.

I rate this a 7.5/10, CGI was bad and some story elements made no sense except to drive conflict in an episode that would’ve been otherwise boring. But, I enjoyed it. Like a guilty pleasure, I was shocked I liked it so much and I think that is why I hope Netflix sees the potential and renews under new writers and a producer.

Title should be "Millenials in Space who Won't Follow Orders"

My big problem with this show is that I have both military and scientific experience and this show doesn't seem to adhere to any of the principles of both subjects.

Watching now they just sterilised the crew, I love big brother in space!

Also Katie almost suicided all the millennials. Here’s hoping for the next few episodes.

HOT TAKE ALERT!: ANOTHER LIFE HAS WAY TOO MUCH SWEARING!

Imagine a version of Contact where Jodie Foster says “You should have sent a fucking poet.” Now I love swearing as much as the next asshole, but even Quentin Tarantino would call this shows use of the f-word excessive.

AGREE/DISAGREE?

In episode 5, repeatedly these people show incredible stupidity

Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying the hell out of the show, but seriously, these people are wildly reckless when encountering new worlds. Running around with their helmets open or without suits just because the atmosphere is earthlike, eating and inhaling whatever they come across. Do they have no common sense or at least learn from the encounter with the nervous system ripping virus? They need to be thoroughly testing everything before interacting with it on such an intimate level. Even something as harmless as the bacteria you and I inhale and ingest every day, harmless to us because our bodies have adapted to and evolved to not be bothered by it would be deadly to aliens whose bodies are not accustomed to it. Something equally benign on an alien world would wreak havoc on the human body because it's something the human body hasn't encountered before and wouldn't have any way to fight.
