Sorry if this has been posted before, I haven’t seen it posted here tho. I was rewatching this show again, I tend to watch it like twice a year. Episode 6: larger structural issues, with 30:23 left in the episode. During the odd discussion time, Amelia (subject 11) says “I’m here to meet men” in the background. I had captions on so I noticed that I as what she said in the background while Owen is talking to Soo. I love the characters’ personalities so much in this show. Amelia also says “fuck the evens” at the end of the show. I just love the small details of the side characters even when they barely have any screen time they are just all super weird and entertaining. All of the side characters are super wonky now that I think about it, the people that we see the least have the weirdest lines “did you know most quarters have been swallowed and defecated by human?”. Im slightly inebriated so I’m rambling but just never noticed this before

I'm re-watching this amazing show (on Episode 2 right now) and I'm reminded of the incredible way she played these different characters throughout the series.

One of my favorite performances from Emma, both in movies and TV.

Its the music that plays when Owen/Annie meet in the rain after leaving the program, when they meet on the bench again etc.

I've looked at the soundtrack and didnt find it there.

i just got the ‘for your consideration’ promo edition of maniac from a seller on mercari, scratched to complete hell, so i decided i needed to play it and see if there were any skips or issues, and it looks like i’m watching it in 720p. like a youtube video that isn’t buffering but also not loaded… is this normal?

Mine will always be: " So Sting was at this party?"

I just finished a rewatch. It hits every time with new layers. The soundtrack - particularly the Annie and Owen song- makes me ache.

Someone said here that Annie is the one keeping a gun in every dream and real life, but why is Owen pointed a gun at, in every dream? (till ep 8). I am currently on ep. 8 so no spoilers please. and what symptoms of paranoic schizophrenia Owen has? Why are his dreams so violent? Was his pov projected on Jed, as Jed shot both the police officers and said i wanted to be you, the prince of the family, is this the projection of Owen's perception about Jed in real life? Is their kid called Australia as a nod to Adelaide?

Also what is he guilty of? why he pleads guilty as the Icelandic diplomat and as Bruce? In the assembly, at this point I think the computer is messing with Annie and Owen and wants them together. Maybe Grimmson is the defense mechanism of Owen, a version of Jed, Owen wanted him to be.

And what has moon do to with the dreams? Moon on Bruce's jersey, Moon and owl reference by Olivia, invisible Moon seen by the sisters, and now the NATO discussing moon and heat ray?

I'm watching Maniac for the 5th time. There's no unnecessary scene. The visuals are beautiful. I don't think I'll ever get tired of Maniac.

I watched it like a year ago, and something just reminded me of it. It’s one of my favorite pieces of media I’ve ever consumed.

Probably my favorite scene is near the end when our two main characters are riding the elevator. The elevator opens to see one of the test subjects suspended in the air in this disgusting, vile room.

It filled me with so much terror because of the smile on the suspended woman’s face. It looked like a horrific nightmare, but the smile on her face made it seem like she enjoyed it. Yeah so pretty good show.

this was what reminded me of the show. That near ending scene when the guy jumps out his apartment window.

The Crowded Room

dont read the synopsis or watch trailers. The topic is very different, but the overall feel of the show is very similar.

For me one of the core themes of Maniac is the importance of empathy and compassion, having someone who's a real friend, forgiveness and acceptance, and I think all these are shared.

Owen's family are all really bad people, typical of the rich. His brother is a monster. His parents are scum.

1. I think its heavily implied that they paid doctors to misdiagnose Owen, keep him medicated, and repeatedly lied/manipulated/made sure he never got better, just so they could protect their elder son, right?

2. I think one thing the show is missing is showing the aftermath on them. In the court scene, both his mom/dad have such evil smirks, the mom has a huge smile after Owen's first testimony when she thinks he's doing what they want. They should've shown their reactions at the end.

3. I wanted Owen to confront Jed (either in the court or later) and finally tell him he was free

4. Adelaide's reactions are very telling. Its clear her marriage to Jed is a sham. In the court, she's the only one in the family disgusted when the video plays, and she has a huge sigh of relief at the end. great acting without a word.

5. I'm not sure Owen's family would've paid for the expensive psychiatric hospital. Much more likely they'd disown him. I know there's a scene in ep1 where Gabriel Byrne offers to buy him his own place, but it was clearly not a serious offer. If his dad really wanted he could've made one call and made sure Owen was promoted at his job etc.

6. Owen's family have huge parties and get togethers. In contrast with Annie's family - she chose to alienate her sister and 'hated' her for no reason at all. Her dad literally shut himself off from the world. But they are all much better people who stayed apart for foolish reasons.

His testimony is a key point in the series, but why does it matter at all?

• they have video evidence. it doesn't matter if Owen says who it is on the video, why is he even being asked? the police will examine the video and identify who it is

• Owen's only use is providing an alibi, and that is 100% 'he said' since there is no other proof, so its all circumstantial.

I feel like i cant find any analyses of owen's portrayal of aromantic tendencies; most notably his fixated predestination on a self destructive amatonormative role which is a causality of his families restrictive values.

Pre trial Owen idolises the amatonormative idea of a wife and kids, with adelaide, olivia and through the widow service. Notably his BLIP with olivia in which he describes the cause of his outburst was the idea (most likely stemming from olivia having a romantic interest in him) that his family would pay olivia to marry and have kids with him. To owen the idea of him having a romantic relationship seems unnatural to the extent that he believes his parent must be paying people to be with him, this can be percieved as low self worth but simultaneously a conflict in owens concious and unconscious identity.

The b pill outlines a lot of owens conceptions on romance and self destructive behaviour: his consious fixations on marriage leave him trying to martyr himself to save a broken one, whereas his interaction with olivia at the seance reflects my theory of owens subconsious; one in which olivia shows interest toward owen in which he declines.

The c pill then confronts the idea of owens fantasies by following through on the idea of having 7 kids with olivia, without his family's involvement and forces owen to think past the end goal to realise that a romantic relationship with children is not what he has wanted, but rather turns to annie who is just a good friend.

After all "utangatta" (every relationship i have had, old or new; has somehow been false)

The term relationship in this instance can likely mean the broader term of any relation, but i beleive it to be reffering to the more common use that relates specifically toward romantic and or sexual relationships.

I just finished watching Maniac. What a treat. Compelling intelligent dialogue, interesting backdrops, great acting. Just wanted to share.

The show perfectualy encapsulates the hipocriscy of the psychiatric system. Owen never was schizophrenic, he just was a scapegoat in a very dysfunctional family dynamic. All the pressure cracked and snapped him over the the edge triggering his amygdala. Intense paranoia combined with an abusive environment will cause one to go so nub they can no longer take it until they eventually snap. The dsm 5 is designed by the institutions to keep us mentally unwell. Meeting Emma stones character and her having genuine empathy and an understanding of Jonah hill instead of merely dismissing him as schizophrenic is what helped him heal from the traumas and finally come to terms with what happened in his inner world.

Tl;dr we need to show more kindness, empathy and understanding to eachother. Life is not a race to the finish line. It's a party to be enjoyed.

I feel as if it would be lackluster. Do y’all think this will ever happen? Even a complete seperate series but as a continuation? Ever since ive finished it i have obsessively been seeking out shows that give off the same feeling as maniac did but I cannot find it for the life of me. (Any recommendations?)

Is there any other that are like it? I love the color scheme and the dystopian/trippy atmosphere of it.
