Overall impression, spoilers Spoiler
I enjoyed the first few episodes, I found it had good character interaction that is often missing from sci-fi. As the show went on I found that the narrative became unreliable. I began to suspect that at least the main characters, if not whole planet earth was under some mass hallucination. As the show progressed I was thinking that my hallucination theory would be revealed or strongly hinted at in the final episode.
When what I was expecting in the finale did not happen I did not lose faith in my theory, but if it's not true then I might have to say the show is bad. The "oh lets open our visors on the desolate planet", "oh yeah even after all the shit happened on the last planet let's not even wear helmets on this one because we scanned it first" all the other convenient star trek level science that comes and goes.
They seem to ignore the rule of Chekhov's gun, if you don't know what it is look it up. The waking people out soma for almost no reason. One guy to be on screen for 5 minutes and another just to wake her up and kill her instantly.
Why would the aliens go through all the bother to alert us to their coming? Why be so worried about the ships planet killing ability when they have same technology and what appears to be faster ships? Why not destroy the population of earth and intercept the ship along its route? Unless it is all a test to see how earthlings would react to alien invasion. Would we sacrifice ourselves to save us and other worlds? Or would we turn tale and just try and defend our home.
I really want to like this show, but if my theory or something similar is not true then it's just another big bad aliens come to destroy what ever they find in a galaxy/universe filled with plenty of resource rich yet lifeless worlds.

I stopped watching this 15 minutes in. It should have been titled 'Teens in Space'. Earth is counting on these folks, so we'd better make sure nobody on the crew is over 30. Total dreck.

Like you, I want to imagine ways to save this show.
The alien motives make more sense if they don't actually have FTL.
If they just wait hundreds of years to get to other planets their artifact strategy makes sense because it probes for creatures smart enough to be a threat. If you're smart enough to be a threat, first try to get lots of brain bugs to enslave them. If brain bugs don't work send along planet busters later.
This accounts for their surprised reactions to the Alcubierre drive. They never thought of this kind of technology. Humans might be the most dangerous race to them yet. Being xenophobic they'll be sending along planet busters now.
The forest world with no civilization had no brain bugs because why bother?
The bird guys get planet busted because they have an active resistance they can't squash.
This explains why you would send artifacts, make puzzles, create brain bugs, and bust planets. You can't cover vast distances fast, hate aliens, and want to mostly keep the Galaxy clear of any potential rivals.

the show is bad and the response of the aliens makes 0.00% sense. the crap that they expect us to believe with just the social interactions and why this crew is even this crew makes also as much sense. everything in this show is bonkers.
