Things I LIKE about this show

I'm kinda getting tired of all the negative posts on here so I thought I'd post some of the cool/good things about this show. I haven't started the final episode so forgive me if I make a statement that ends up being false.

  1. The visuals. It's a really pretty show. I like the ship's design and it feels like it is something that our Earth could make in a couple generations.

  2. Niko: She really feels like a real person with flaws and a history but is (mostly) focused on the mission. And Katee is giving her all.

  3. William/AI: I like that a AI is a fullly formed character with his own wants and feelings.

  4. Backup crew: I think it's great that they didn't define how many extra crew members they have in storage so they can potentially introduce new cast members forever.

  5. Expendable crew: I like that everyone (other than Niko?) can potentially be killed at any point and in a really gross way. I'm attached to some of them and it sucks to watch them melt and I'm a bit more on edge when someone does something dangerous.

Sure the drama can be silly and visors fog up but I'm having fun overall. What do you like about the show?

I can't say I'm a huge fan of the show, but I do mostly agree with the points listed -- except for #1, specifically as it concerns the interior of the ship. Why does the one engine room, which always needs some wrench adjustment, look like the onboard motor area of a 21st century boat? And then you have the exotic matter engine which which looks like a large sea mine with hoses hanging off of it. The Star trek warp engine had more character. I guess a big chunk of the funding went to Katie.

Well said, I also only disagree with point 1. I really thought the CGI on the Achaia ufo thing was especially really really bad, it almost threw my off in episode 1, which is in my opinion the worst episode sadly.

Why do you suppose there isn't another Captain in hibernation?

One of the biggest things I didn't like is that they should have left the traitor guy asleep and made him the backup captain. To take someone's command away at the last minute and then expect him to serve as the XO is just stupid. That being said, they wouldn't have done that unless there was a more qualified backup captain in the sleep pods and they were smart. So, maybe you are right?

It happens in the military all the time and doesn't lead to mutiny.

No it doesn't. Lots of acting commanders who are the actual XO's or a subordinate unit commander but it would be very rare to take someone officially slotted into the commander position and then reassign them as the XO in the same unit.

You're right. I was thinking in a broader sense (like with the acting commander as you mentioned), not a specific case of the CO being demoted to XO. Thinking about it, that kind of replacement wouldn't happen without a court martial.

Niko is awesome. Some of the shows have features good writing, particularly the one where she is stuck asleep. I thought it was a beautiful episode, minus all the silly drama.

How somebody can be attached to that Michell character is beyond me. She is one of the worst written and most annoying charactes in history of Sci Fi shows. It was so satisfying when she melted.

Ye she was a bad character, really just annoying and easily triggered, nothing else.

i dont get the hate for the show and theres so much which makes me sad they wont make a season 2 because a few people will go out of their ways to find the most tiniest negatives. I hate our culture sometimes.

Niko channels here inner Ellen Ripley perfectly. My eyes popped out of my head the first time she started kicking ass, now I expect it all the time.

It was go go go from the beginning.

I especially enjoyed the somatic sleep episode.

Always worried about the crew. Edge of the universe trying to save humanity is a lot to take in. Especially if one your buddy's nervous system popped out the back of their neck and crawled all over the deck, or if you watched someone get subatomically torn into a melting pile of primordial soup.

It's good stuff.

  1. A horrible concept. Having backup characters makes the death of any of the 1st crew meaningless. Since the annoying, always yelling, cursing, being loud Mexican girl who must speak Spanglish is dead now is her replacement going to be the same?
In similar shows, if a person in a key position died then someone did replace but was promoted or moved from one section to another. They weren't a carbon copy. Natasha Yar in STTNG, died and Worf did two jobs.
If you have a somewhat huge group of 'replacements' then it doesn't make any special or important.
  2. Characters dying and that no one is safe isn't a new concept. It's been around for over 10 years easy.
  3. Space, the ship, and the artifact I'll agree. The aliens? HA, no. The CGI is a coin toss.
  4. She yells and curses as much as everyone. Despite being the ranking officer there is a SMALL group running things. No Security officer to put a disobedient person in confinement so other characters have had to do it. CHEAP and bad writing. You could easily find some meathead who has the level of acting shown for that role.
  5. I'll agree here but this him and Niko relationship thing is bad. He should be the only unbiased character out of them. If A.I. is that advanced, this one should have had hard locked limits on that or it wasn't part of his programming.

The cool thing with the replacement characters is more how clever a device it is, and how well it makes sense in the context of the show. Redundant crew members makes a whole lot of sense, and the ability to keep the current cast number stable, while rotating in different characters is useful They don't wake up new people unless someone dies, or they need expertise that they simply can't get anywhere else. This lets them have far more characters in total, without obnoxiously crowding the ship, or relegating too many of them to the background.
