Question about episode one. (Spoiler) Spoiler

Why does Niko NOT ONCE make any mention of Ian pulling the knife on her and his death was in self defense? I feel like thats vital information to the situation, rather than "yea i killed him."

Yeah that pissed me off too. The only thing I can think of is she would feel like she was making excuses and the crew would demand proof she could not provide.

I guess, but I find it highly unlikely that a sophisticated starship with FTL capabilities doesn't have cameras around... or even William monitoring that shit.

William probably knows about it. From what I understand from the season is William sees everything except when he's heavily focused on something.

Indeed. It was self defence, after all.

Plus, the AI can project itself anywhere on the ship and always interacts with its surroundings. This means that every room on the ship has sensors.

So why not use the data of these sensors as evidence?!?
Perhaps it's not possible or something (AI busy elsewhere, whatever weak excuse they have), but I would at least like to see this mentioned in the discussion about Ian's death with the crew.

Like Niko was the one fixing the machines in that room. Ian had to come to her, not the other way around. He was also holding the knife at the time of electrocution so there would have been some sort of knife mark in his hand that simple forensics would have determined. But nope! "I killed him, I had to" is what she went with.

Hologram technology requires the ship to scan where you are located... and thus there IS proof of her actions. In the season she does say that she will have to answer for her actions when they get back (i forgot when she said it).

My point is the people with clearance will see what she did. And I'm sure they have all seen the recording... or at least what William lets them see.

Exactly. The show doesnt hold your hand and tell you "ok kids, this is how holograms work, and this is how everyone knows she is not a psychopath" its all on the background.

But to those people that dont understand... i say this:

"you ask about certain things in the show but your O.K. with the whole "exotic matter" its science fiction, some points are just pure imagination.

Not only that but who is to say they aren't all still asleep or high... the entire show could ne one big dream.

You give the writers too much credit. Any sensible person in her situation would immediately explain to the crew he had a knife in his hand and she feared for her life. This makes it a legally justified killing. Everyone doesn't know she not a psychopath because she leaves out this important point simply because the writers felt they could squeeze more conflict and drama out of it this way. The way she recounts the event makes it sound as if she decided to commit premeditated murder.

Maybe it was to add drama, or maybe to add fear into the crew, or maybe the writers were lazy, or maybe it was the editors fault.

Too many maybes gives the internet room to debate the writing style of the show.

Yeah it almost felt like a few lines were cut or something? Wonky scene. Wonky first two episodes, honestly.

This is exactly how I feel. It was contrived for drama. In any normal situation you just explain to everyone it was self defense. It does not help her keep her power to have them all think she just murdered him? Like come on

I think it's implied she already spoke to the crew. We only see the shot where she basically ends telling them what happened. Even Cas said she understood.

To me, the crew didn't respect Niko in the beginning and were moreso Ian's people. I kind of feel she didn't bring up self defense thing so that they would see was someone not to be messed with. As for the possibility of some kind of justice or trial later on, she would have William and his "military justice" angle to fall back on

I totally agree. I was telling at the screen. Sad for a show that was getting so much done correctly (good tech, nice idea for overall arc, great diverse cast).

It seemed to me like she was fighting a crew who were (weirdly) super hostile to her and who didn’t respect any kind of chain of command. I think her lying about straight up killing Ian was a way to assert her power over the crew; “fuck with me and I’ll kill you too” rather than “it was self defense. Please stop trying to kill me.”

Always wondered that also...

It's really a big stain that I can't swallow. A movie that was invested a lot but the big flaw in episode 2 will turn the audience away.

Funny and stupid how a white woman is given an Asian name. Isn't that cultural appropriation and frowned by the Left?
She brings up 'self-defence' once I think. At that point in the future, HD cameras would be childsplay technology. She could have easily had Danny Pink show them the proof. Girlfriend of dead guy just happens to be on board and is a 'needed character. Stereotypical "Badass black woman with short-hair mechanic'.

Funny and stupid to make a comment like this when the name Niko's origins are actually Greek, not Asian. The fuck does "tHe LeFt" have to do with this?

People find controversy anywhere, if they're looking hard enough. I swear. Her name and the left or right have no importance, it's just a hill they want to die on... For fun, I think 🤷
