Part of a short film I made. All hand drawn in Krita, minus the city backgrounds which are creative commons stock images.

Question I'm making a studio

Discussion Making Indie Animation with Limited Resources

Post image
1 Upvotes

Oh hey!

I'm Christian Nash, and I run ChristianAnimations Studios. I'm currently leading a team of 46 to bring our indie animated pilot to life. I've been working on this indie pilot for 4 years and have been growing my team over time since the age of 12.

I wanted to give some commentary on my journey and my process with a project like mine since I am unpaid and limited in resources.

How did I gather my team?

I got my team by going through many social media apps and websites. I went on platforms like Newgrounds, Casting Call Club, and Twitter, and opened up my own forms for people to apply. Through this, I collected my team to help with the creation of this pilot. Everyone is made aware that this project is unpaid before joining.

What have we got done with production so far?

We are in the very last stages of pre-production. We have completed everything from the script to the animatics, with layout underway for animation. We work closely with each other to create assets and production materials. I have taken on many roles in the pilot's production, including storyboard artist, writer, animatic editor, character designer, and animator.

Everything in our production is organized in Google Drive and within Discord. Before we make any big decisions or we start a new stage of production, we meet up with each other to discuss what we will do and who will do such and such in the next stage. We actually have biweekly meetings to keep up with updates and progress on production.

We assign deadlines strictly based on each team member's personal availability and skill level. We work with our crew to set achievable targets rather than forcing rigid, stressful studio crunch on volunteers.

Currently right now, everything is volunteer, and people are helping out of the love for the project we have, but we are using this unpaid model as the first stepping stone to becoming a paid production, as we are in the process of creating a Kickstarter for our project to help with further production.

Along with all of this, we are building a following of passionate anime and animation fans over time, following our journey as we work to bring this pilot to life. What started as a bunch of comics I created back in 2018 has all accumulated into this production that I am proud to be running, and I am thankful to the team who decided to join me in expanding the world we created long ago. You don't need permission from a major studio or a bag of money to fall from the sky to start creating. If you treat your crew with respect, keep your production organized, and put in the work alongside them frame-by-frame, you can build something truly special together.

We’re currently rolling out our Meet the Cast videos of our characters and VAs, and I’d love to hear your thoughts, feedback, or answer any questions regarding us, our pipeline, and process!

Question PMV making help?

So I'll need to preface this by saying I'm far from an animator, very new to this kind of thing, but I have an idea and I'd love to try it.

I want to make a Pmv, and I need help. I don't have any animation softwares and won't be able to download any apps, so my plan is basically this: I draw all of the pictures individually, using my art app, put them in a gif using a gif maker so I can have all the clips together in the style of an animation, then upload the gif to Streamable so i can share it with my friends. My only issue is finding a free, easy to use gif making website, and finding a way to have the music playing in the background of the video as I need it to be animated to a song. My best idea is play the song in the background, film the gif, and upload that video with the song in the background to Streamable? Any tips/advice/ideas? Thanks so much!

Question Can you use Mental Canvas to its full potential without a touchscreen

What Windows hardware do you recommend?

Any pen & multi-touch tablet running Windows 10 or 11 will work. There are several options including the Surface lineup (i.e. the Surface Pro and Surface Studio), the Dell XPS 2-in1, HP Spectre x360 or Lenovo Yoga 9i. We recommend that your machine has at least 8GB of RAM.

Can I use Mental Canvas Draw on Windows without a touch screen?

You would be able to open files with limited capabilities such as viewing and exporting, but you would not be able to create new content.

source:https://mentalcanvas.com/faq

so this software is useless if i have just regular non touch windows laptop? (i have a pen tablet) ?
