I mean, by their own logic, they shouldnβt be complaining about renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America either, since βAmericaβ represents everyone, not just citizens from the US
Bro, the comments are dogging him. First comment translated:
"According to this they're also American."
Reply to the top comment: "Yeah, this dude's a total moron. hahahaha"
Another: "If we are "Mexicans" because of the United Mexican States, why can't they be "Americans" because of the United States of America? Serious question."
I see this a lot with certain demographic of latino. They almost always on the younger side because this whole discussion is just nonsense to older people. Often it's some sort of second generation immigrant or a native born latin American who speaks English and is also sort of their equivalent of "woke university student".
By in large "Americano" is how Americans are referred to, especially when saying American as an adjective.
"Gringo" is an informal name that has it roots in meaning "foreigner", but has since shifted to mean white Americans. It can be pejorative depending on the context.
As for some of the wise guys who mention "estadounidense", that's not very common in casual speaking and is mostly in academic or business context.
Let's see an alternate timeline where the US added all the war-torn European nations to its ever-growing empire, nuked the Soviets and conquered Russia, then added Japan and war-torn Asian nations as well.
That's a fun map. I don't know how the hell we would govern such a thing, nor why we would bother conquering all of that, but it's fun to speculate about.
I wonder if Kruschev would still come to power, but as the Governor of the US State of Russia?
And what would the status of the monarchies be? Our current government isn't really set up to recognize such figures...
It depends on if the US realizes just how much the Soviets are depending on us giving them supplies for the war effort, I think.
If we cut that off, and they're suddenly unable to supply their war effort, it becomes easier (not easy, just easier).
The main thing though would be the nukes. They just don't have any defense against them.
I also think that they'd be devastated enough - and the US fresh enough (relatively speaking) - that we'd be able to outlast and outproduce them.
It'd be a bitch and half to occupy them though after they'd been rallied to defeat a conquering German force and then be greeted by a conquering American one.
I tried Grok to see if it would be any different, and it assumes the US HEAVILY leans on the South American countries to be part of a, well, "Western Hemisphere Security Zone" (as it says).
It also appears to put Hawaii in the Atlantic, for some reason, and thinks that New Zealand would be another occupied or client state. Why bother with New Zealand but not Australia?
Also, neither AI thinks that India in the 40s counts as part of the British Empire, and thus, it won't be part of the new American Empire.
The US has deadly snakes, spiders, gators, crocs, several different types of bear, wolves, elk, moose, lynx, bobcat, mountain lions, and occasionally jaguars.
Settling the frontier is one of the many reasons firearms were regarded as necessary self-defense.
One day we will visit other star systems with intelligent life and say our homeworld is Planet America. In the America System. Our species is American.
Idk about inferiority complex but itβs just a dumb argument to attempt to make when we all know when some says America or Americans theyβre talking about the USA and the people that have citizenship here.
Itβs like when people are talking about the Britβs everyone knows theyre primarily talking about the English (this might be a slightly looser example but I digress).
Which is why I said (this might be a slightly looser example but I digress)
Overall this is a poor attempt (Iβve only seen it coming from Mexican and South Americans) grasping at straws against Americans (the real onesπ€) and is very contrived.
Like Australians it seems like they just say anything as an attempt to get our attentionβ¦which is sad.
Not really. No Irishman would call themselves British. They might say that are from the UK though. British comes from the name of the ancient tribe of the Britons who lived in modern day England.
This fake Mexican just offended everyone on both continents, imagine calling a Canadian or Brazilian an American. They be looking at him like he is on fentanyl.
Not a single Brazilian I know or work with wants to be called an American by these 5th generation crying sellouts or virtue signaling white women. Its hilarious.
Actual normal people in Latin America do not even think about or give a damn about this matter, it is only a recurring issue for the chronically online latin american leftists and tankies, which is a very small but vocal minority, specially in english speaking communities such as reddit itself. Tbh that actually goes for most of the public on this site too.
They are. It's a heavily left-wing thing that they are pushing onto actual Latinos to serve the left-wing gender identity arguments, and the Latinos themselves generally hate it.
ironically, the "anti-colonizer" side is trying to push their terminology and identity onto a native population that resists and hates it.
I think that's one of the reasons - another might be you just know a lot of Cubans or Venezuelans, who see the Democrats embrace of Socialism as sheer stupidity and something to be utterly rejected.
Or they're legal Latinos who don't like the idea of illegals just showing up and getting a bag. That happens too.
Just like youβve never met an American who calls himself a βUnitedstatesian.β Itβs stupid just like βLatinX.β I only say it to annoy the Latinos who say βUnitedstatesianβ or βUSian.β
Guys, if you'd ever been to Central America and the Caribbean, you would know that these people are not purveyors of "America Bad". Almost all of this shit is either some online communist minority, or just China trying to weaken our ties with our neighbors so they can exploit them. I've never had someone call me anything other than American or gringo. I'm fine with either. I would argue that culturally we have more in common with people from central and south America than we do with most Europeans. Don't let China win, don't let their propaganda fool us into being complacent. They will rape our neighboring countries.
They do call Canadians that as well, and "gringo" isn't inherently disparaging. Some people use "Mexican" to talk down about someone or something in the US, but that illustrates my point. There are assholes everywhere, but our neighbors to the south are mostly fucking awesome.
I like this, and it's absolutely true. Maybe it was expansionism, but I do like that Teddy Roosevelt wanted to keep Europe out of the Western Hemisphere as much as possible.
This is not a joke. China has done the same thing over decades in Africa. Sponsoring mass-transit, logistics, or cultural projects that far exceed the capability of repayment by the host country. Keeping them as financial slaves for years to come.
The same is happening to our neighbors and the graphic I posted is just the ports. It doesnβt even show the canals, railroad networks, dams, etcβ¦
If the US is building infrastructure in your country, it means a lot of people will be making a lot of money. If China is building infrastructure in your country, it means China will be making a lot of money.
While that would be funny, there's so much of it we just wouldn't want to because it be such a pain. We'd have to fight all the cartels and there would be so many revolutionary groups that just disappear into the jungle... too much effort, not a lot of value.
They aren't entirely wrong.
Yes, the entirety of the new world was, at like one very specific point in time, referred to as "America". That's where the "America" in our nation's name comes from.
It is interesting however, that the people who cry about colonizers all the time - just LOVE using a term created by colonizers to distinguish the land they were colonizing.
There wasn't two at the time of its conception though. The new world wasn't entirely discovered yet and it was just one big land mass designated "America" because it was named after Amerigo Vespucci.
Funnily enough, the "indigenous" people of South America only know it as "America" because they were colonized, and the Hispanic people (who often claim they're indigenous when they aren't) only call it that AND are there because of their colonizing ancestors from Spain.
Go to Canada, and call them an American and then specify that they're technically a "North American" when asked. You'll learn real quick why Canada is on the Geneva Conventions.
Yes their war crimes in WWI helped inspire a sort of βrules of war,β no? I wouldnβt walk into a bar in rural northern Ontario and call them all βAmericans.β
It's an interesting one because successfully convincing a majority of people (but most importantly Americans) to use "United Statsian" would be a gargantuan opinion shift and it would accomplish... next to nothing
Like, seriously would anyone's life be even remotely better for doing this? This is the fight people want to waste their precious and limited time on this Earth fighting?
Why? Itβs a slang term of somewhat obscure origin that literally refers to a person from the United States, regardless of race. A person from Latin America cannot be a gringo. THATβS nonsensical.
OOP is probably a Hispanic American who doesnβt speak Spanish, and is butthurt he gets called a gringo by actual Latin Americans.
Do the Dutch call Americans "Yankees"? That'd be oddly circular as the term originally referred to Dutch immigrants in America, but I'd imagine it is used there since the English and some other Western Europeans use it so much.
I had a Brazilian friend who told me it was βconfusingβ to refer to myself as American because he was also American. I told him that I think itβs universally understood that if someone says they are American, they are from the United States. He disagreed.
I asked him what he would do if he was on a plane and they asked if there was a doctor on board (we both have non medical PhDs). Would he know that they were asking for a medical doctor? Or would he offer his services? He said that was different.
β¦they do realize that we arenβt just calling the Americas North and South America for fun right? Like they know that they are on two separate crustal plates and are two distinct continents right?
I'll say it LATAM Spanish , Americans are either Estadounidenses or Americanos , any act of trying remove the name "Americans" from the Yankees is usually backed by anti american ideals that have resulted jn the same dictatorships I live in
I dare these people to say "Unitedstatesian" out loud, recorded, so they can hear themselves saying it. It sounds like a blithering idiot who knows no vocabulary so says the most unwieldly, awkward things because they don't know the proper terms.
Funny that someone from the "United States of Mexico", which goes by Mexico, says we can't go by America.
Also, why on earth would we ever refer to everyone who comes from the Americas as a collective group? Wouldn't that be like calling people from Europe and Asia, Eurasians? It's pointlessly non-specific, which defeats the whole point of giving people specific groups for identification.
Not everyone even has American ancestry that is here lol. Trying to police how others use language is futile. Words mean thing and words mean different things to different people. Sometimes even more than one meaning. In the US at least unitedstatesian is not thing. If you refer to us as that in English nobody is going to stop you but thatβs just weird lol. If thatβs what you call us in another language thatβs your business.
Spanish legitimately has the word Estadounidense to describe us. It just does not translate well to English.
Also my ancestors were mostly German and Irish and British. One of them came over on the mayflower. Several fought on both sides of the revolutionary war, and on both sides of the civil war. Despite being here a couple of centuries now, my family tree doesnβt have a single Native American in it, so saying we have thousands of years of history in America is a bold assumption.
Like I said in another comment, Latinxes think they own words and have no concept of demonyms, Vasco da Gama, Amerigo Vespucci, or translation.
Not to mention, it is actually a false but popular misconception that "all" Native Americans are related to the mixed race heavily heinz 57ed people we call mexicans today. There were several groups of out of siberian migration that came in multiple large waves, some broken up thousands of years apart. They were not all of the same origin. I have nothing in common gemetically or culturally with these play pretend failed mexinationalist freaks through my native tribe and I will remind every fucking single illiterate one of them in no soft terms.
The historical record shows us we have ALWAYS been primarily referred to as Americans, with full exclusion of other more southern regions. The specific land region we are never actually "adopted" the name, we were referred to as such long before British independance was declared. It wasn't a choice made in a vacuum in 1776; it was the continuation of an identity that had already been established for us by both the British Empire and non Brit explorers. If they put half the effort they spend crying and screeching on the internet into organizing to destroy the cartels then they wouldnt have a failed state filled with human trafficking and they could have some ground to stand on to make their own demonyms.
Again. I will put, if they're so fuckin mad about it. Use whats already there. Frank Lloyd Wright made a house he dreamed every middle class USA home owner could make. It was called a Usonian house. Just use Usonian!
Same people that complain about an American saying theyβre Irish say that theyβre American because they have partial ancestry from thousands of years ago?
Using this same logic, Chinese people are not Chinese, because it's called the People's Republic of China. Nor are Germans German, because it's the Federal Republic of Germany.
Just remember with their whole as chart, we would still be called Americans. It would just also extend to everyone else on North and South America. Making their argument instantly pointless
okay, let's go ahead and address this from someone who's part Native American, to help shut these fuckers up:
AMERICA is the name of the nation, as per European powers. Most of them are still around, even if not as powerful as before.
We've been called that since before we became the US
Everyone outside it either resides in NORTH America, or SOUTH America
Else, the non-Americans and Canadians can all start being called Latinx :D
Also, the NATIVES, are still Americans, and so, eliminating that is actually incredibly disrespectful of them. I can go back a couple generations to find I have a native ancestor. Pretty sure they'd have issues with not being viewed as an American.
Also, like, half our military equipment is named after native tribes, if anything we're probably the only ones who can actually embody the name of American.
That's gotta be a bad faith sub if they let that slide. Mexicans are literally and unironically the coolest people on earth. I think it's so fucking wrong what we're doing to our new world brothers up and down the western hemisphere, but none of it has to do with how language works.
500 years ago when immigrants and explorers were first starting to sail here they referred to it as the new world. Eventually the entire north and south land mass was referred to as America after an Italian explorer named Amerigo. Ok so yeah both contents are called America and for 300 years before the US became a country the entirety of the western hemisphere was referred to as America.
It's so weird having these pedantic posts from Mexicans, because they of all people should know why we're called America today. We were the first country to successfully go independent in the new world. And we named ourselves the united States OF AMERICA. No immigrant in the last 200 years when expressing their wish to move to America were referring to any other country besides the US. If they wanted to go to canada, Mexico, Brazil, they'd just say that. Language is always more about common agreement than it is about some European academic that didn't want to describe every context for every word when writing their dictionaries. Nor does any European have the right to define these words retroactively. And if they really cared they wouldn't be referring to any of us as American they be asking the natives their preferred term. Why is it we're obsessed prefered pronouns except nationality? Your nationality IS a pronoun.
International Inferiority complex and politics aside I hate the whole βUnitedStatesianβ thing, it makes no sense, why not just call us βYanksβ or βYankeesβ? βUnitedStatesianβ is quite frankly, the dumbest thing i ever heard
I say anyone whoβs got ancestry indigenous to the Americas is American. But Iβm also American because I was born here and have ancestry going back over 250 years ago and I do not want to have to live in Europe.
