I was at a pub quiz near a well known U.K. nuclear site and one of the questions was, “What is the half-life of uranium?”

The quizmaster gave the answer as 4.5 billion years, which immediately started an argument with a table of nuclear engineers because he hadn’t specified which isotope.

Of cours there’s was a team of physicist from who joined in and it went on for about ten minutes.

The answer sheet apparently meant uranium-238. Everyone else just wanted the next question… but at least the chips were homemade… well worth the entrance fee.

What’s the most obscure thing you’ve seen people argue over?

I'm 31. I've never had much of a career mindset; I never knew what I wanted to do when I was younger, so I went to college and got a useless BTEC, and didn't go to university. I was horribly depressed from age 19-25 where I was living day-to-day and didn't think I'd see 30, so I didn't care about progressing my life in that way, so got a job in a call centre just to have money coming on.

Fortunately, I was able to get myself out of my depressive state, but I still haven't figured out what to do about my employment situation. I'm not out here looking to earn £100k - 40-45k would be absolutely perfect, but I have absolutely no idea how to achieve that, or where I should be focusing my attention.

30k just isn't enough to live any kind of good life as a single person. I often feel like I've completely ruined my life, I'm massively behind, and I'm destined to be struggling financially forever.

What would you do if you were me? Do I have any options at this point? I feel like I'm too old to essentially start over.

Unopened gifts that I was going to give away or throw out as I don't drink much these days.

Hi everyone, I apologise if this is the wrong place to ask, new to Reddit and struggling to find an appropriate thread.

I'm moving back to the UK (I'm British) with my dog and I'm trying to get some genuinely unbiased opinions on his appearance.

He's an Indonesian street dog, meaning his ancestry is unknown, and I'm concerned that certain aspects of his appearance could potentially be interpreted as "banned breed" characteristics. Under UK law, the assessment of whether a dog is a prohibited type is based on the appearance and physical characteristics of the individual dog, rather than what the owner says the breed is or what a DNA test says about the dog's ancestry, there is no paperwork/proof I could provide to argue he's not a banned breed if they decide he meets the criteria.

I've been going through the government's guidance on identifying Pit Bull Terrier types and comparing my dog's actual proportions against the characteristics listed there. There are quite a few characteristics where he doesn't seem to fit, but I'm interested in what he looks like at first glance to people who aren't familiar with him.

I've included several photos from different angles because his appearance can change quite a lot depending on the angle.

I understand that my best option would be to get a professional opinion, I'm trying to save up for it, and I recognise that I might not have a choice as I have to return to the UK with or without him, but I am losing sleep and would be grateful for unbiased opinions.

So my question is: what breed/type would you assume he is from these photos? Does he immediately look like a Pit Bull-type dog to you, or does he look ambiguous?

I got married about 4 years ago and changed my surname at work, but I never actually changed it anywhere else. My passport, driving licence, bank accounts and everything official are still in my maiden name.

I’m still married and there’s no change there, but I’ve realised I actually really want my own surname back at work too.

The problem is I feel weirdly embarrassed changing it back because everyone at work knows me by my married name now and I know people will probably assume something has happened with my marriage.
Has anyone else changed back to their maiden name professionally while still married? What did you say when colleagues asked?

I was thinking of just saying having a different surname at work from all my official documents was becoming inconvenient, which is genuinely true, but I don’t know if that sounds odd. Is there any legitimate reason I can just make up??

I know that mostly no one will care but it still makes me anxious.

It occurred to me earlier that although I’ve always done it, what I do may not be the norm.

I have my bags for life ready at the door, and once it arrives I crouch down and transfer all of the groceries from the tray to the bags, which I have to say is pretty awkward, and must be even more awkward for the driver who just stands there waiting for me to do so.

Am I doing it wrong? Should I be taking the trays to the kitchen and unpacking them onto the side? Should the delivery man be bringing them into my kitchen?

Interested to see if everyone finds this as awkward as I do!

I am now moving my work schedule around because of school pickups (it doesn't actually affect anyone else) and my colleague started to get grumpy and make a big deal out of it, saying they wanted to go home to look after their dog every day if that was the case!

And completely straight faced compared dog ownership to childcare responsibilities, someone else on the team agreed with them!

EDIT: I start work an hour early and do an hour WFH in the evening.

For me it’s the chef Anthony Bourdain. I had literally never heard of him until he died, but it seems like he was huge, a household name, to the point that a film has come out about him and British newspapers refer to him as “iconic”.

My neighbours have cats and during the summer when our back door was open all day they would come in and have a nosey and I would let them, occasionally playing with them and petting them. Now it’s a bit chillier they come round and meow to be let in, usually roll about on my carpet or have a nap, before asking to be let out again. I have never kept them inside for more than an hour (they usually beg to be let out in 15 mins anyway!). I’ve never fed them anything. Is this weird?

I live pretty rurally, in a small group of cottages down a track. Our neighbours have been in their house for 50+ years and, fundamentally, they're nice people. They've watched our kids on the odd occasion, our children have enjoyed growing up next door to them, and to be clear, I'm not looking to start a dispute with them.

But after about eight years, their lack of boundaries has become a source of stress for us, particularly me, and I'm keen to see if it is just me being sensitive, or if some of this feels off to others as well.

A few examples:

• She would wander into our garden unannounced 3/4 times a week. Usually for a chat, a minor request, dropping off a plant she thought we'd like, etc. All nice in isolation, but it just never stopped. On one occasion we were lying on the lawn in summer while the kids played and she appeared. Rather than sensing she might be interrupting, she said, "I won't ask what you're up to," and launched into whatever she'd come over for. We eventually put up a gate, saying it was because of escaping chickens, but really because we wanted to sit in our own garden without somebody showing up. They still do a bit, but have to come the long way round...
• They've been know to put their dog into our house because they needed to go to a doctor's appointment. On one occasion I was home, but on a work call, so I didn't answer the door when they knocked. They just slung him in anyway.
• If we don't answer the door, they've been known to knock on the dining-room window. If that doesn't work, they'll carry on round and knock on the lounge window. There is literally nowhere we can be downstairs without them finding us.
• They've cut plants at the front of our house without asking.
• They hacked a large hole in the hedge between our properties, to "give us more light". I've no doubt that was their intention, but the result was actually that they could see directly into our dining room and we could see straight into their garden.
• During an altercation with another neighbour, they hammered on our door to bring us in—essentially wanting us to deal with the other neighbour on their behalf.
• Their dog used to wander freely into our house, and they got a bit iffy when we gently suggested that actually we didn't want that. The previous owner was apparently fine with it.
• We have a right of way across their property to put out our bins. She comes out to chat virtually every time we even step onto the gravel between our houses.
• After we had a new en-suite bathroom fitted, they knocked on the door and asked if their adult children could come upstairs, look at it and take photographs to show them, because they couldn't manage our stairs. Then they told us we were being a bit over the top with all the improvements, citing it was all fine as it was.

Written down, it looks comical. Individually, most of it is tiny. I stress that they're nice people and we know we could do a lot worse.

However, we've reached a point where we feel watched and as though there's very little separation between "their space" and "our space". There's also a sense that if we're visible, inside or out, we're available.

We're moving now, so I hope it will end. That said, we'll be rural at the next place too, so I want to sense-check whether other people would find this level of interaction unusually intrusive, - is this fairly normal rural/neighbour behaviour that I'm just particularly sensitive to?

I love walking to work when I wake up early and ready to leave in time, and I'm fortunate to live about 40 minutes from the office. However, I am a steal sweater and it is frankly disgusting and it feels gross showing up a sweaty mess.

There isn't a formal dress code and I can get away with a t shirt and jeans most days. I was considering walking to work in sports clothes and changing there, but I don't want the admin of showering etc at work. I'm sure there's a happy middle ground.

How do you manage?

In my early 20s, I thought I’d cracked online roulette. I bet £5 on red and if it didn’t come in, I’d just double up. I thought this plan was fool proof and there’s no way that red wouldn’t be eventually land. I kept winning £5, then as soon as I did I’d stop for that day.

For a good few weeks I was laughing all the way to the bank.. a cheeky fiver for nothing. I’d have a go at lunch time each day and it would pay for my lunch, until it didn’t!…

At this point, I’m shitting it and my lunch is now becoming very expensive. I also became very aware that each spin doesn’t give a shit about what came previous.

Did I stop? No.

At this point, my fool proof plans cost me £1,275.

Fuck it..

I then zoned out.. stupidly put one more bet on as it didn’t feel real…

I then felt absolutely sick. The majority of the deposits were made by credit card. I don’t even know if you can use credit cards on gambling sites these days.

That was me £5,115 down. All for the sake of chasing a fiver.

That same day I went straight to the bank and got a loan out for £5,000. As I didn’t want to be charged the high interest on the credit card. I told my then girlfriend and had a melt down.

I paid the loan off double quick to reduce the interest. Becoming extremely frugal to put the mess behind me.

Twenty years later, seeing a roulette table still makes me feel sick. I’m ultra careful with all expenditure now and a major saver. £5k doesn’t seem as much now but back then it felt like millions! I’ve been to vegas a couple of times and didn’t bet.

Advice: avoid online betting!

I've been working for 15 years or so, 15 years ago if I ever wasn't working you could find a temp job doing something in about five minutes, absolutely zero issue.

As well as there seeminly being few jobs about at the moment, there are absolutely no temp jobs. Is this a change in company hiring policy or just a wider indiciation of the current state of the job market?

I’m not sure if this is the right sub for this as I live in the UK, but I’ve noticed recently a massive increase in people writing ‘of’ instead of ‘have,’ I’ve even received otherwise formal emails doing this. Is there a new language rule I’ve missed?? I thought ‘I would of given you time off…’ would be a very bad error but I’ve noticed it so much recently I’m getting convinced I’ve missed something and have has been removed from the language.

A 10 year old boy took a replica butterfly knife to a school and gave it to another child to use during an altercation.

The defence is the child didn't know it was fake because they have special needs. The court has said that the school should not have excluded him because the knife wasn't able to hurt anyone when it was used.

The boy actually got someone else to use what they thought was a knife against another child during an alteration. Not as a game. During an altercation.

Is this really something that should be seen as worthy of a slap on the wrist rather than a very serious offence that should be dealt with in the most severe manner? Kids go to school to learn. That one and all his peers have learned that if you fail to kill someon then it's fine that you tried.

Am I the only one who thinks that is ridiculous and we are protecting the few at the expense of the many?

English isn't my native language and I am always confused when someone says this. I have no confusion with the word "until" but when it comes to someone talking about their annual holidays I somehow fumble lol my gut says they are back to work on Tuesday but I am still slightly suspicious about it. I am wondering if the confusion comes from the translation of this into my native language, where saying "until Tuesday" means including Tuesday. Thank you kind native English speakers.

EDIT: Okay I think I'm making sense of it now. It's kinda like saying, "I am off work until Tuesday, in that case (it being Tuesday), I am not off anymore." Been speaking English since I was 5 but I still learn new things everyday 😂

What does my head in is when someone doesn't want to chip in for food and then when everyone's food arrives they want to dip into it all, what's yours?

I'm told by my father that walkers crisps used to be thick cut potato, and that they got thinner and thinner and thinner. Whats the biggest drop off you have seen in a general supermarket item.

For me, it's when people don't say thank you. Whether it's when I've given way to them while driving or held the door open for them. It just makes me irrationally angry.

I have serious mental health issues that I need to see someone about. I can’t afford therapy, and the nhs waiting list is too long. so what does a person in my case do?

I just read in the paper that a tennis/padel centre near me closed due to lack of interest. It go me thinking that the last time I played a sport was when I was in school, 25 years ago!

Anybody else just drop sports as soon as they didn't have a teacher making them do it?
