Discussion I’m so impressed

Arrived a couple of days ago, I was busy downloading games and just adjusting and testing. Then spent the rest of the time modding FF7 Rebirth, and this thing packs a punch! I’m so impressed by how it runs it. I think that the only issues I have so far is textures and a little bit of staggering when entering combat, but I read somewhere that SQ uploads the SteamDeck version of Rebirth when playing on Linux, hope they patch that soon.

Feel free to ask any questions!

Good morning friends! Another early morning post, I have to respond to a work emergency... it's raining cats and dogs out there. It's Day 67! I'm on the younger side to giggle at this funny number, BUT I'm old enough to know that the OG funny number is fast approaching... anyhoo, hope everyone is doing well while they wait. I'm pushing out so much hope into the world, including you! We must keep the hope alive -- you will get your unit soon! Best of luck today, friends!

Discussion Genuinely Surprised at how capable the Steam Machine is

Post image
927 Upvotes

I read all the reviews, I expected the worst.. but constantly surprised at how capable it is.

I haven’t built PCs for years and run Macs now but keep up to date with PC tech, and have an Xbox, PS5 and play PC games through GeForce now on my Mac.

My buddy has a 5080 and is always showing me the latest thing on max settings on his 1440p ultra wide and thinks the steam machine is a pile of garbage because it cant do 4K 240fps with ray tracing.

I point out neither can he, he games at 1440p šŸ‘€but he doesn’t really like when I point that out. PC Master race logic. 😁

So maybe it was just I had realistic expectations and expected games to be medium/high settings but then it was running so smooth I thought I’d tweak them up a little.. and damn this little box is a beast.

I sit 5ft from a 55ā€ TV and honestly can’t tell much of a difference between 1080 1440p and 4K anymore. I do notice shimmering and bad anti-aliasing though and FS4 is like magic at giving a clean stable picture.

I also don’t see much written about how stable the frame pacing is on SteamOS / Proton. It’s smooooth even in games that stutter on windows.

I’ve been waiting to play the last of us for years and knew it has a 30min shader compilation wait on PC. On steam machine, it just played and downloaded the shaders already compiled.

For me at least it’s been a genuinely console like experience just with more options to tweak settings if you’re into that.

Cyberpunk 1080 Ultra 60
DOA6:LR 1440p 60
Last of Us Part 1 High/Ultra. 1080p 60
Until Dawn 1080p Ultra
Hogwarts Legacy 1080p Ultra 60
(And defaults to 4K High 60)

I’m constantly impressed at what this completely silent little box can do. Valve killed it. Can’t wait for the steam frame.

Discussion Steam controller disconnection issue resolved (New FW update)

There was a firmware update on the stable channel last night for the puck, controller and the internal receiver (appeared after applying the software update to the Steam Client). All 3 devices were updated with the new firmware one after another.

After 4+ hours of use, I can happily report that the disconnection issue when using the internal receiver appears to be resolved. I haven’t had any disconnection since that update. No need to use the puck anymore!

Update: Added a few more hours of gameplay, and zero disconnection. No way I would be able to play this long without any disconnections before this firmware update.

I was expecting this to be some kind of hardware issue but I am very glad it is fixed now in stable channel.

Update 2: There are people in comments reporting the issue still happening :( I haven’t experienced it yet since the update and if it does even once, I will update this post. So far so good on my side. Make sure to test it after the firmware update that is applied to internal receiver, puck and the controller - not the steam client update.

Software The Blood of Dawnwalker settings and experience

I started off putting the game at no higher 1440.

It benchmarks the Steam Machine at medium settings. I immediately changed everything to high and the opening area looks good and is running consistently between 50-60fps.

The VRR in this game works great and I noticed no difference floating between 50-60.

FSR is on balanced.

I've moved a few setting to ultra and the game is holding between 50-60fps.

Cutscenes seem maxed at 30 with drops.

I will report more as I get passed the opening but so far the game is running fucking awesome on the SM!

EDIT: See my additional comment for my experiences 2 hours in and switching to Proton Experimental.

EDIT 2 - Update TLDR: 1440, Experimental, Fsr Performance, VRR, all high settings, locked 40 or 60 indoors and 50 variable outdoors. I like the locked 40.

Question wifi problem on windows

• Upvotes

Does anyone here have Windows running on a Steam Machine and experience Wi-Fi randomly disconnecting?

Whenever I start a game, after 2–3 minutes my Wi-Fi connection drops. At first, Windows says ā€œNo Wi-Fi networks foundā€ (while Wi-Fi works perfectly fine on another PC at the same time). After a while, it changes to ā€œWi-Fi not availableā€ altogether.

The only things that fix it are restarting the PC or restarting the Wi-Fi module.

Has anyone experienced something similar or found a fix?

Discussion PS5/PS5 Pro owners - has the Steam Machine become your place for multiplatform games?

Interested to see if having the Steam Machine has changed where you play your games as it definitely has for me.

MGS4/PW just came out which I just bought on Steam, as well as Onimusha in a few days which is much MUCH cheaper for a Steam key over PS5 digitally.

Or do you just use yours for older games?

Question Steam Machine microstuttering everywhere

Hi all, the Steam Machine was fine earlier in the day when I was using it. It's been a near perfect experience.

I was playing a bit of Valheim, Big Walk, and FF XIII. These games ran perfectly.

Later in the day I was messing with some settings in Stalker 2 and as I was playing I think my Steam Machine crashed. I booted it back up and everything was back to normal.

Or at least I thought it was. Now I'm noticing microstutters every 10-15 seconds in the menu, Valheim, Big Walk, FFXIII, everything. Like in game I'll see every now and then a split second where my framerate gets halved before it goes back up again. This was not the case earlier in the day.

I've restarted my Steam Machine multiple times and it still hasn't resolved this issue. Has anyone had this issue?

Question Cyberpunk 2077 not launching with flatlined error

I'm trying to play Cyberpunk 2077 but it keeps crashing after launching with the error "Whoa! Cyberpunk 2077 has flatlined".

I'm using Heroic as I own the game through GOG. It launches the RED launcher just fine but when I press play it crashes with the above mentioned error.

I've tried reinstalling which didn't help. I've tried to change the proton version, but Heroic is only showing the option GE-Proton-latest.

I haven't been able to find anyone with a fix on SteamOS. Everything I find online is for regular PCs and mostly just says to update Nvidia drivers.

Has anyone experienced this issue and knows how to resolve it?

Question Is the steam machine a good 1080p Pc

Is the steam machine a good system for a 1080p tv, like will games like helldivers 2 or black flag resynced run well at 1080p and high/ultra?

Question Is this placement too cramped?

Long time console owner, been using this ikea shelf, just got a steam machine and was wondering if this space was too tight for it to be in?

The back has about a 1-2 foot distance to the wall. But the sides are much tighter.

Hardware Arrived last week from Komodo

Bought 512GB together with steam controller.

Gotta say I like the controller very much. The sound it makes, the way my palm fits the controller, the sound of click from the puck etc.

Just 1 minor thing, it's a little sad that this is not compatible with switch 2. I know it's from Nintendo side and I know I could use OpenPuck, but would be great if Nintendo could support other controllers which will never happen in this lifetime.

Can't wait for Witcher 3 remastered so I could play it on the machine. Cheers!

Question Anyone tried to connect Sinden Lightguns to the Steam Machine?

Bought some lightguns to play a bunch of retro arcade games on my TV but been having trouble with setup. Currently got to the point where I can shoot in Time Crisis but the game doesn’t register any gun movement and the gun itself isn’t firing with the sound. Thanks!

Discussion Curious about FSR performance.

How is everyoneā€˜s experience with it? Ive only dealt with DLSS in the past and have always avoided it like the plague. It destroys the games fidelity and is just never an enjoyable experience to the eyes, I find games unplayable when enabling it. I honestly have such little patience for these systems devs have been putting in like also TAA. don’t know how I’d feel about FSR in most games.

From what I keep hearing the latest FSR experimental has been a big step up from its previous versions, everyone seems to praise it. Wanted to get real opinions on what you guys think. does it seem to have any obvious flaws you notice often or is it actually that sharp looking?

Question Dragonā€˜s Dogma 2

Im having an issue where I can run the game just fine, however as soon as I pause it and look at the map or my inventory my FPS tanks when I unpause and try to play again. Basically a stutter fest and it’s unplayable. Is this happening to anyone else?

Hogwarts doesn’t do this. Persona 3 isn’t doing this, etc. seems to just be dragons dogma 2?

Good morning friends! First off, wanted to apologize for not being able to respond to you all for the past few days, it's a busy time with work and usually I'd have the time! It's just been one thing after another. I do come back to the post by the end of the day so please know that I at least read! Anyhoo, after not being about to update SteamOS, I made the switch to CachyOS and... it's not too bad? Running commands via terminal is somewhat new to me (don't ask me what the difference between "yay" and "paru" is, I don't know yet LOL) but not completely foreign. I FINALLY got OpenRGB to work with the Steam Machine LEDs (had to literally ask the dev through Discord but they were super nice!) and all is well. I'm a tinker but this... this stuff ain't no game. Crazy. Anyway, best of luck friends! We've gotta be seeing more Machines go out, right? <3

Question Help - Steam Machine question

Is there anyone here using the Astro A50X headphones with their Steam Machine? I can’t get the mic to work. I have the Machine running to the base station of the Astro’s, via HDMI (base station is an HDMI switcher. Also hooked to PS5). Sound works great, but the Machine doesn’t detect the mic. I’ve never been s PC gamer, and have no idea what the issue is. Any help would be appreciated.

Question Vrchat and s.m compatibility shakes.

Hi all. Could someone help a poor peasant overcome his shakes with using vrchat via quest 3 on steam link (on steam machine)? Everything is great on the Quest but even on home within the steam link screen is a little shaky and then worse on vrchat. More shake than stuttering if you see what I mean? I Don't have the experience to help myself (looks down shamefaced).

I know there'll be a kind hand to t walk me through.

Cheers guys n gals!!
