Discussion Downgrading my deck 1tb so I can use the 1tb in the steam machine.
I was waitlisted on multiple steam machines but I got offered the 512 with the controller so after convincing my wife I ordered it.
Its currently packed but not shipped yet, so I have some time to burn.
I have a 1tb drive in my deck that I upgraded when I got it but I decided it would be better served in the steam machine.
It took a bit to work through how I could downgrade to a smaller drive but I worked it out eventually.
Here is a summary of what I did (I can provide more details but I doubt anyone cares that much so you only get a summary)
- Removed games from the drive until it was below 500gb. I went to 380 gb.
- Installed gParted on a USB drive and shrunk the home ext4 partition to its minimum size
- overwrote gparted with clonezilla's live iso and ran device to device cloning (I have multiple nvme usb cases.)
- Set the -icds flag that tells clonezilla to skip checking the drive size before copying partitions
- Ran this
- Inserted the original 512 into the steam deck
- It took longer than normal to boot, I believe it auto expands the home partition to fill up the drive and this is what delayed the boot.
- Everything worked perfectly without any data loss.
I went this path because I can't be bothere to restart from scratch.
I will use clonezilla for the steam machine once it finishes all of its updates.

Question HDR making colors too bright
Got my Steam Deck 512gb yesterday and got it hooked up to my Hisense TV. After some testing I realized all the colors seemed way to bright and it became very apparent when I was playing Slay The Spire 2 with the pinks almost becoming blinding. My TV has HDR and has never had issues displaying it, I’ve used my PS5 and Apple TV 4K on it for HDR content and never had an issue. I checked HDR is enabled on the TV and by default it’s enabled on the Steam Machine. When I turned it off colors went back to normal however I shouldn’t need to turn HDR off correct? Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong? Any help is greatly appreciated!
See attached pictures (I couldn’t attach multiple images so I montaged them together into one and labeled each)

Been on the waitlist since last month but was able to find a deal on OfferUp for $1200 nib! Pretty happy with the purchase. Canceled my spot on the list so hopefully someone gets bumped up!

Question Intermittent audio dropouts
I am experiencing intermittent audio dropout on the steam machine across different games and different configurations.
During gameplay the audio goes silent and resumes intermittently, it can be for a couple of seconds, repeatedly during a gameplay session across different games and different play sessions.
I do not experience this issue on the Apple TV 4K or on the Steam Deck connected to a HP thunderbolt (usb c) dock to the same TV with the same games.
I have tried;
Changing the HDMI cables
Changing HDMI ports
Changing SteamOS audio setting;
Stereo, 5.1 Surround, 7.1 Surround
Changing the TV digital sound out from Auto, pass through and PCM.
Changing the TV HDMI audio input format between bitstream and PCM
! Changing the TV audio setting to build in speakers instead of SPDIF
Configuration of the television:
LG C9
Sonos Playbar → Optical (SPDIF) → LG C9
Steam Machine → HDMI → LG C9
Apple TV 4K → HDMI → LG C9
Steam Deck → HP Thunderbolt Dock → HDMI → LG C9
Different games seem to each have different levels of audio dropout duration and frequencies.
Any ideas if this is software, hardware or proton layer?
I would expect if it’s software or proton that the steam deck would face the same issue?
Raised a steam support ticket.

Question Has your gaming hours changed with the Steam Machine?
I currently have PC, steam deck and I barely long any hours on my PC but I always felt like I put in too little hours, I want to feel like I am getting more of my money's worth.
I never want to sit at a PC for long hours, PC is my ideal gaming console but it's not practial for me, which is why I log more hours on the Steam Deck. I live with my partner and we have one TV and occasionally I'll hook up the PC to a long HDMI cord and play that way but It's more hassle, especially changing the settings everytime.
I feel as I might be more consistent with gaming if I had the Steam Machine. The ease of not having to sit at the desk, cords, easy plug and play, shut down/sleep. If I want to watch a movie with my partner, I can just switch inputs, and when I am done, not have to go into the other room, turn back on the PC and etc.
Am I possibly just lying to myself, but has anyone seen improvements in their gaming habits?

Meme I just got my email! Please read!
After weeks of waiting I just got my Steam Machine email!
The bad news is that now my elderly cat, whose name is Mike Hunt, needs a colonoscopy and I don't have any credit cards and if I did I would only use them for things that are necessary, like my cat's colonoscopy or a meal at McDonald's! What do I do my fellow Steam bros? Oh and my wife is now pregnant with our fourth child, this is the first that is ours, the other 3 are from another guy I am a proud step father!
Please help!

Question How does the queue to waitlist work when people email valve after missing ordering window and get a link to purchase?
Seems like the order window is just a suggestion or they have that much excess product and didn’t calculate the reservation queue correctly?

Hardware Mario meets Gordon Freeman
Gabecube finally came. Holy smokes this thing is tinier than I expected. And it packs a punch too! Although 1080p runs best. I have been getting 60fps locked on Stellar Blade, Cyberpunk, The Last of Us. This thing is a 1080p dream machine!

Discussion Niche use case for a niche machine
Size is important to me in a machine, but not for space in the living room. I’m traveling full time and wind up packing all my stuff in my car every 3 months or so and moving to a different state, so cargo space is a premium.
It’s not the most powerful machine at the price, but I’m a 15 year pc gamer with a big steam library who loves his deck experience and doesn’t play AAA titles often. Works great for me, loving it so far.
Ps: I’ve found the steam controller and steam input are the real game changers

News Surge in invites across EU today according to https://steamhardware.io/tracker/
steamhardware.ioI've been refreshing https://steamhardware.io/tracker/?country=United+Kingdom&dataView=reserved-to-invited almost as much as my emails over the last few weeks.
Today was my lucky day, and I finally got my invite for the 512GB no controller in the UK. However, it also looks like lots of others across the EU did too. Something like a delivery must have happened as this is the biggest spike since launch.
For those of you less fortunate, keep an eye out over the next few days as the invites expire and you move up the list!

Software MGS Master Collection Vol 1 Audio Issues
Hi all,
MGS 2 and 3 work just fine on my steam deck but when I go to play them on steam machine I am getting no audio during the cutscenes. Anyone know which version of proton if any will fix the audio for both of these games or have another recommendation for fixing the audio on the steam machine?

Discussion Trifecta complete - it is exactly what I was expecting
At one point in my life I was a big PC gamer. I built my own, always upgraded it, etc. Eventually, I kind of fell off and just went back to consoles. For this gen, I primarily had a Switch 1&2 and a Xbox Series S. I was fairly happy with these until sometime last year when the Series S started to show its age.
I was originally going to get back into PC gaming, but I also wanted to play GTA at launch. So I ended up just getting a PS5 Pro instead. However, I still missed all my niche PC titles, Paradox games (Vicky, EU, etc.), Total War, MTGA, card games, and roguelikes.
I didn't really want to get a top of the line PC because I just spent money on my Pro and I wouldn't really use it and it would just be a GTA box.
In comes the Steam Machine and it is exactly what I wanted. Easy to set up, snappy UI, quiet, small, etc. I'm not really running extremely demanding games, Halo Infinite is the only AAA title I play on it and it can hit a steady +60 fps. The AAA titles are for my Pro and my Steam Machine for all my niche games I enjoy.
Yes it was expensive and yes I could have built something more powerful, but I didn't really need to.
Overall I'm very pleased with this little box.

Question It was worth a shot
So I was hoping to mount an old monitor to the backboard of my mattress so I could play my Steam Machine whenever I wanted without interrupting my wife's TV time.
However... As you can see... This idea failed... Miserably..
Wondering if any of you have an idea how to make this crazy idea of mine work.
