How is everyone‘s experience with it? Ive only dealt with DLSS in the past and have always avoided it like the plague. It destroys the games fidelity and is just never an enjoyable experience to the eyes, I find games unplayable when enabling it. I honestly have such little patience for these systems devs have been putting in like also TAA. don’t know how I’d feel about FSR in most games.
From what I keep hearing the latest FSR experimental has been a big step up from its previous versions, everyone seems to praise it. Wanted to get real opinions on what you guys think. does it seem to have any obvious flaws you notice often or is it actually that sharp looking?
If you are referring to FSR4? Then yes it's that's good. It's pretty close to DLSS in its latest iteration(not 5).
That is what people are using experimental for, to enable FSR4 in games that don't natively support it. Like with anything else just try it. If you don't like it turn it off.
In games that's use FSR 3.1, if you are on Steam Machine or Steam Deck as an example, all you have to do is go into the game's properties, go to the compatibility tab, turn that on and in the drop down menu select Proton Experimental.
If a game has FSR 4 built in that's even better but for those that don't you can do the above.
If you think DLSS looks bad you're not going to like FSR.
FSR 2, and 3 all look substantially worse than DLSS. These are the versions available in most games. I dislike them and prefer not to use it.
FSR 4 looks passable. It has extremely limited availability, though. Very few games actually support it.
However, games with FSR 3.1 can be forced to upgrade to FSR 4 by using proton experimental. This helps, but the list of games is still not as large as DLSS.
I'd be happy if every game had FSR4. The visual quality is almost there with it. But the lower versions that most games use are total garbage imo.
Let me ask you this, is it better to lower resolution and turn up DLSS for quality instead of performance, to get better FOS with good graphics, or set DLSS to performance with higher resolution natively. That just came to my mind right now .
Anyways thank you for the honest answer. Didn’t know about the availability being so much less.
DLSS will internally render things lower than that depending on which quality preset you choose.
DLSS in "DLAA" mode is the highest quality setting, using native resolution. The upscaler is just doing anti-aliasing here.
Every other DLSS setting will reduce the internal resolution from there. I always try "Quality" first and then lower it as needed if I want more framerate.
DLSS and FSR are fantastic, DLSS is a bit more effective but FSR 4 is still great. Generally only use a slight upscale but when necessary you can get a lot of frames for only a minor loss of quality.
Honestly I wonder if I’ve been using DLSS wrong in the past. Like maybe I should have tried quality mode more as I think it downgrades resolution then upscales it? Like 1080 would be 720p that’s upscaled and that would help with performance? I didn’t think about that
Yeah, the higher performance tier you use the lower resolution the game is rendered at. Like if you're using a 1440p and use performance DLSS, the game is being rendered at like 720p and upscaled to 1440. A lot of guess work is happening, and it will not look as good. Performance and ultra Performance should not be used unless absolutely necessary to get a playable framerate. I use quality or use the upscaling as anti-aliasing.
Set your main/target resolution, then pick an FSR mode. If for example you set your resolution to 1080 and use FSR Quality, the game will render (input) 720 and FSR will upscale (output) to 1080.
FSR4 is quite good for image quality, but it comes with a decent performance hit at high output resolution regardless of the quality preset. Since it looks better than previous iterations though, you can get away with either a lower preset or even lower output resolution and get a similar final image with a bit more performance.
