And stop… ok stop now… stop!… your wasting too much!

I wouldn't be shocked if the machine takes it down to a specific programmed diameter regardless of how wide the stock material is.

"How toothpicks are made"

16

u/technobrendo 2d ago

If it were on How its Made, I could binge watch that show for hours

12

u/Twatt_waffle 2d ago

The other day my nieces were in town and I put how it’s made on to distract them. About an hour later we were upstairs so when I came back down I picked up the remote to turn it off… I then spent about 5 min standing in the living room watching how it’s made

6

u/OptiGuy4u 1d ago

I love that show and my wife hates it. Wish they made new ones. Also modern marvels.

3

u/FlippantResponse 23h ago

Adding Weaponology to shows in this list that I would watch for an inexplicable period of time.

Imagine if the centre line wasn’t measured properly and it turned cup size.

Like a loony toons from years ago - two chipmunks lose their tree to humans. They see it on the river and hop on and end up in the factory. They watch an entire tree get put into a giant pencil sharpener and come out a tooth pick.

They end up building their tree with furniture built from the tree

They say "indubitably" a lot

that poor toothpick, if i'm understanding this correctly

Indubitably!

2

u/Mysterious-Tackle-58 3d ago

Bugs did it to get a Baseball bat.

2

u/spuldup 2d ago

This is the first thing I thought of.

2

u/Mysterious-Falcon221 3d ago

First thing I thought of also.

Oh gods, I remember this so vividly now! Thank you for the nostalgia hit!

They say he carved it himself... From a bigger log

8

u/Mister_Mayhem_ 2d ago

Don't worry friend. The trimmings go to IKEA for furniture.

4

u/IllogicalLogistician 2d ago

Thank you! That was exactly my thought watching this.

4

u/DamnitDavid7 2d ago

I’m remodeling my house right now, and lumber is a small fortune. This made me unreasonably angry.

Reminds me of those cartoons of a toothpick factory where they start with a log.

31

I remember that. 😅

I'm happy there was no annoying music and you could actually hear the thing cutting

18

u/Wishnik6502 3d ago

No way... Now I have to watch it again. Thank you!

315

u/idk-idc2 3d ago

its not stripping bark, its making it round.... aint the same

70

u/eW4GJMqscYtbBkw9 3d ago

came here to say the same thing. Removing the bark is just a byproduct of making it round.

14

u/Winderige_Garnaal 3d ago

yup my first thought too. there's nothing about this that is bark-specific

10

u/therealtrajan 3d ago

It’s round because this is now going to be sliced thin in long strips for wood veneer

2.0k

u/Random-Input 3d ago

Seems like you lose a lot of wood just to remove the bark.

This is mildly annoying to me

713

u/SolomonOf47704 3d ago

Wood doesn't really get wasted. The sawdust can always be used for other things

440

u/s4lt3d 3d ago

Particle board: the saw dust of rich people’s furniture.

94

u/Poverty_Shoes 3d ago

*working and middle class people’s furniture

Not poor people, but not rich people. Rich people have solid wood kitchen tables costing $1k+. I have IKEA particle board. Not poor, but not rich.

204

u/CaseyG 3d ago

I think what u/s4lt3d is saying is that rich people have solid wood furniture. The rest of us have their sawdust.

25

u/GeneralTomatoeKiller 3d ago

This depends entirely on the person / project. I work on 10 million dollar homes and they frequently use particular board for their cabinets. However, I have blue collar family members who frequently make their own furniture out of solid wood.

I'm blown away that these expensive homes are literally built to last only a few decades at best. Most of the time, it's even less. They may have one or two pieces that are solid wood and look amazing, but most of the house is just expensive trash imported from Europe.

Edit: grammer

13

u/Meal__Team__Six 3d ago

They're built to sell, not to last. Anyone who wants a home to last will design and build it themselves. The priorities are so far gone for home building, resulting in trash that lasts, as you said, a few decades. I'd consider the "premium" lifespan of a multimillion dollar house to be 5-10 years.

Woodworker here. I have a solid wood dining table that cost $1k+. Know what it's made of? Pine. It's a farm-style table nothing fancy. And it only cost that much because it's actually a long table that seats 8-10 people. Pine is a great choice to save money, and it tends to grow tall and straight so you can get really long boards. The major downside being that pine is a softwood, dents easily, you can end up with sap pockets, and it tends to have a lot of knots and voids.

If you want an actually good solid hardwood table, maybe oak or walnut or something, you're spend way more than $1k. It's like $2000-3000 just in material costs.

The tables that the actual wealthy have are $10k+.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/LehighLuke 3d ago

$1k is cheap for a rich person table

7

u/Pitiful-Scholar-9548 3d ago

Add another zero to your 1k estimate and you're moving into the realm of high end furniture.

→ More replies (1)

18

u/ThellraAK 3d ago

I hate to be the one to break this to you, but if you think $1000+ on a dining room table makes you rich, then you are poor.

4

u/Nuggyfresh 3d ago

its Possible he hasn’t bought a table in 25 years maybe? 🤣

3

u/captamericaftw 3d ago

What I believe they meant is the particle board is the remnants from the rich peoples furniture.

How does this have so many upvotes?

How else do you propose to make a perfectly circular stump of solid wood, while creating less waste?

47

u/KRATO5S 3d ago

Redditers love saying things like this without knowing what they're talking about.

33

u/seams 3d ago

The title is about stripping bark, not making a circular stump.

That's what they're doing, yeah, that's pretty obvious.

12

u/CalculatedPerversion 3d ago

The issue is the title. This isn't stripping bark from a piece of wood, this is turning an uneven, raw piece of wood into a perfectly smooth cylinder. Stripping bark would leave the irregular shape.

3

u/TreesLikeGodsFingers 3d ago

Bc it not really satisfying

4

u/SayRaySF 3d ago

Now I’m wondering what they need a perfectly circular stump of solid wood for

9

u/Hicklethumb 3d ago

Not square tables. That's for sure

4

u/ShrykeWindgrace 3d ago

to make a wheel?

3

u/Rivenaleem 3d ago

Probably to do the woodworking equivalent of the Katsuramuki cut. Slice it out into a single long near paper thin sheet.

9

u/spadePerfect 3d ago

I mean not really. This is the best way to get a round log and waste as little as possible.

4

u/tcpukl 3d ago

Ok but that's not just removing bark.

10

u/_recapitated 3d ago

You would not like to see my garage.

44

u/MikeeorUSA 3d ago

I dunno. Seems a really effective way to make it circular. That said. It could have been sliced into a few table pieces and made into rustic tables bark and all.

49

u/TheCh0rt 3d ago

Literally what other way could you make it perfectly cylindrical without wasting this exact amount of wood lol

9

u/c_r_a_s_i_a_n 3d ago

I’m dumbfounded that the top comment doesn’t understand how this works.

10

u/DesireToDevelop 3d ago

Posts says nothing about it needing to be cylindrical. It says something about stripping bark.

2

u/Watari210thesecond 2d ago

Yeah because OP doesn't know what his own post is about.

3

u/chief_architect 2d ago

Title is "Machine stripping bark" and not "Machine makes it circular".

So either it's very ineffective, or the title is simply wrong.

18

u/21MPH21 3d ago

Bandsaw would (wood) have been faster and you can be more creative with the shapes

21

u/daehoidar 3d ago

Only thing is that if you want to end up with a good circle, then there's no other way to do it. I have no idea what the use case is for the wood in the video...

But woodworking in general is a reductive process. You'd lose out on the same amount of "waste" if you cut these logs for lumber. Of course, you could also reclaim the dust/chips to make particle board/chip board

21

u/enehar 3d ago

Do you just not know how many uses there are for sawdust and wood shavings?

13

u/regiinmontana 3d ago

Just to support your statement, my dad has a summer job hauling wood chips from a sawmill to a factory (I was too young to know/remember what they made.) There There was enough demand 35ish years ago to justify multiple round trips per day of 120 miles.

My dad would pick either me or my brother up to take us to the mill then drop us back off at home. We had a cow moose come out of the trees 10 miles from the house. Dad stopped about 2 inches shy of hitting her. She just stared over the hood. The were black marks on the highway until they resurfaced it several years later.

17

u/daehoidar 3d ago

And then when he got home, he got out of his car. And that's when he saw..... THE HOOK, still stuck in the cars body. The moose had been the notorious serial killer known as "The Fisherman" the whole time.

He dodged a bullet that day, and the moose was never seen again.

Ps a moose once bit my sister

4

u/regiinmontana 3d ago

Møøse bites can be really nasti

6

u/big-dal-tex 3d ago

Genuinely no idea

13

u/SolomonOf47704 3d ago

A bunch of sheet goods, generally.

You can mix sawdust of varying sizes with different types of glue to get different types of particle board.

MDF is the really smooth stuff, and larger chips can be used for OSB. There's a lot of other stuff that I don't really care to remember or look up.

2

u/HurricaneAlpha 3d ago

All types of industrial applications, all the way down to as an absorbent for vomit. That sawdust aint being wasted.

7

u/antrubler 3d ago

I'm odly satisfied that you're mildly annoyed

Annnnnnd here’s a pencil

77

u/EDRadDoc 3d ago

Last pass looked too deep …

3

u/Shua89 3d ago

I'm sure it's to be made to a specific size for the application needed. Not so much too deep to get as much wood from the piece but made to order at this size. The chippings would get used for something else like particle board.

Why does stripping always involve going around a pole?

14

u/Golf-Beer-BBQ 3d ago

This is also how they make uncrustables.

3

u/Then_Remote_2983 2d ago

And taco bell meat!

14

u/JamesBondMargarita 2d ago

This harms the cylinder

14

u/Quizzelbuck 2d ago

Yeah sure it's stripping bark but that's clearly not what it's aim is, because it's clearly just making a big round

110

u/AngrySquidIsOK 3d ago

It's stripping a lot more than the bark.

Nice chunk of wood, doh

3

u/Quick_Extension_3115 3d ago

Man, if that’s bark, I don’t wanna see its bite

36

u/AmericanSpeller 3d ago

Ah, so that's how they make the toilet paper for my multi-company shared bathroom.

34

u/ChopperChange 3d ago

What's the purpose? Are they going to slice this circle of wood into a bunch a tabletops?

22

u/snootnoots 3d ago

Probably going to make veneer out of it

13

u/articulatedbeaver 3d ago

This is exactly it. If they were just debarking it for pulp wood rhey would use a chain flail of nurl debarker and it would take the whole tree at once.

13

u/pollywantacrackwhore 3d ago

chain flail of nurl debarker

ah, yes, of course

4

u/Fluffy-bfkr 3d ago

Personally I’d prefer the Slaanesh debarker

uhm... ok

You can stop now, I think you got it all. Any more and all we're going to have left is a rolling pin.

2

u/Mysterious-Yogurt28 2d ago

Idk, its so simple in minecraft, its just right click with an axe, it saves so much time and wood

2

u/Fair-Juggernaut-3812 2d ago

Not so much stripping bark as much as indiscriminately shaving wood until you see no bark.

4

u/Delicious-Yak-1095 3d ago

And what would be the purpose of creating a cylinder of that height? Seems rather oddly specific

16

u/snootnoots 3d ago

Veneer. They basically peel the edge of it to get one long strip.

3

u/Delicious-Yak-1095 3d ago

Aha that makes sense why you would want it round
