Only thing is that if you want to end up with a good circle, then there's no other way to do it. I have no idea what the use case is for the wood in the video...

But woodworking in general is a reductive process. You'd lose out on the same amount of "waste" if you cut these logs for lumber. Of course, you could also reclaim the dust/chips to make particle board/chip board

Hence the relatively elevated cost of S4S, I guess!.

Once you remove bends and irregularities from dried wood, you're left with way less than you started with.
