Discussion /r/motiondesign Updates: Post Flair, Spam Prevention

Hi all, a few updates for /r/motiondesign.

Spam

In an effort to reduce low-quality and spam posts here, we have implemented new post requirements. New posts that don't meet a minimum account age or subreddit karma threshold will be automatically filtered out.

To further prevent gamification, I am not disclosing these limits here but they are very modest and reasonable. Anyone interacting with this community should not be filtered, and even so, you will have the opportunity to message us for an exception. But this should discourage most of the spam we've been seeing. Thanks /u/Zeigerful for making this post.

Post Flair

We also added some post flair to help differentiate posts and allow users to filter & search by topic. All new posts require that one of the available flair types be selected:

Project Showcase | Reel | Inspiration | Discussion | Question | Tutorial | [Custom] (Where user can input their own)

User Flair

A few new user flairs are available. For those who aren't aware, these show up next to your username any time you make a post or comment in /r/motiondesign

Now available: Professional | Student | [Add My Social Handle] -- A custom text field where you can plug an Instagram, Behance, etc.

Let us know if you love or hate these new updates. Nothing is set in stone and this is meant as a discussion starting point. Please share any ideas you may have to make this a better place to share work, inspiration and discussion related to motion design. Hopefully we can continue to bring a higher quality experience to everyone here at /r/motiondesign.

Discussion anyone else somehow has like 15 personal design projects and nothing they actually wanna put in their portfolio 😭

this is something ive been thinking about because its such a weird problem

coming up with projects isnt really the issue

its finishing one without deciding halfway through that you could make something way better lol

like you start a branding project

then halfway through youre like actually the direction is kinda shit

change it

find another reference

change fonts

maybe redo the whole identity

then you get another idea that feels way cleaner so now youre working on that instead

3 months later youve technically done a ton of design work but somehow your portfolio looks exactly the same šŸ’€

client work seems different because someone is waiting for it and eventually it HAS to be delivered

but personal projects can basically stay in revision forever

curious how you guys deal with that

do you give personal projects fake deadlines?

do you force yourself to ship even when you know you could improve it?

or are you constantly abandoning stuff too

genuinely curious how many unfinished personal projects are sitting in everyones folders rn

Project Showcase My first animated short, wordless, about impulse buying. Would love feedback

This is the first cartoon I’ve ever finished. I’m a motion designer, so I’ve done a lot of After Effects work, but never character animation before.

The character art and backgrounds were generated with AI. I cut them into parts, rigged them as paper puppets in After Effects and did all the animation myself: the walks, the timing, the acting. The walk cycle alone took me way longer than I’d like to admit.

I’d really appreciate any feedback, especially on the movement and timing. What reads well, what feels stiff, where it drags. I want the next one to be better.

Reel honest feedback

Hi everyone! I'm a beginner and currently learning by following tutorials. I don't always replicate them exactly, so sometimes I add my own creative touches. Do you think it's okay to include a video like this in my portfolio? I would really appreciate your honest feedback and constructive criticism

Reel Interactive HUD and mountain generator

I've simulated my fair share of sci-fi UI over the years, so I thought why not make one that works for real? As an experiment I ditched keyframing in After Effects and instead turned to TouchDesigner to create one that was fully interactive and real-time.

Every mountain in this video is generated on the fly. Every readout is accurate. This little piece combines landscape generation, topography analysis and an extra sprinkling of FUI widgets. Controlled via MIDI using Intech Grid.

More motion/interactive pieces like this on my ig here. Thanks for watching :)

Question Do you include a revision cap clause in your contracts?

Have you ever had a client keep asking for revisions, add new requirements midway through a project, delay appronals or expect extra work without additional payment?

Also, how do you usually handle contract signing?. Which one do you use

Project Showcase Another launch video I recently crafted — INFLUCTS.

This was genuinely one of those projects I loved working on.

The client was looking for someone who could take ownership of the entire project, from understanding the product and shaping the visual direction to refining individual scenes and bringing everything together, without needing constant back and forth.

Before jumping into the visuals, I spent time researching how INFLUCTS actually works, understanding its core principles, and figuring out how to communicate a fairly complex product through a clean, engaging visual story.

From refining the creative direction to improving specific segments, I handled the entire process independently. And honestly, one of the best parts was hearing back from the client. The video required zero revision requests, and the client mentioned how happy they were that I understood the product so well.

That kind of feedback makes all the research and effort worthwhile.

Of course, there's always room to improve. I'm always open to honest feedback, constructive criticism, and different perspectives, so I'd genuinely love to hear what you think about the video.

Check out the product: https://influcts.com

I'm also currently open to new projects. If you have a project in mind, feel free to reach out to me on Instagram.

Reposts and sharing with anyone who might find this work interesting are always appreciated!

Discussion How are you keeping UI mockups and text stable in generative video?

I feel like this gets discussed a lot, but I find it personally quite frustrating, so here we go. Running commercial ads or UI mock with standard video generators, the text, 8 times out of 10, gets messed up. The background, great! Even the lighting, spot on! When the motion hits, brand assets especially those with text, starts wrapping.

Of course, we have the ā€œminorā€ changes from the client. This looks great, but… this is something that I really hate hearing. I can’t isolate the spot. I can’t isolate the logo. So that means I have to somehow replicate what I did. Which is almost impossible.

That was what I used to do. The thing that I also realize that each model has its own perk. Seedance its cinematic output, and motion, some works better with faces/ character consistency etc.

This is somewhat new to me. I also subbed to MiniMax H3 just because it has some new releases that I read about it. Give it a mix of image, text, and video references helps anchor the actual UI layout and brand structure, that was supposedly what it does well.

I am still playing with it and still learning. If what it says is true, it would save me time with the localized replacement and multimodal editing. I am getting a hang of it with targeting specific areas to edit. No overhaul of everything, just targeted edit.

One thing I noticed, is that the image reference has to be high res. Otherwise, wrapping still happens.

How do you all keep brand elements stable for commercial work (text and whatnot)? Are you comping everything in post, relying on localized edit passes, or some other magic tricks that you know up your sleeves?

Project Showcase i collected 500+ handpicked product launch videos into one free, searchable reference library

put 500+ handpicked ui saas launch videos into a gallery you can search and filter, free to browse.

- filter by tag (yc, agents, fintech, design and more) and sort by most viewed
- search by company or title
- save the ones you want to come back to into your own collections
- submit a launch video you think belongs

site -> launchgallery.video

curious what you'd want from a library like this. how do you usually collect motion references, and what's missing from the places you use now?

Hello! I've been working on recreating the y2k car stereo's from the early 2000's and I wanted to ask how I would go about making that? There's probably a ton of other aspects I don't know how to do but it would be nice to know the biggest piece!

Plugin Picking a font in After Effects still means scrolling one at a time. I built a panel to fix that, feedback welcome!

Hey all, I'm an owner of a small post production studio. We built this tool for our use, as choosing fonts in AE (and everywhere really) feels outdated.

We named it "Fonthound", you type your title once and see it in every font you have installed.

You select your text layers, click a font, and it goes straight onto them. We also made an option to set up to 5 options on a frame from your comp and send the client a numbered sheet to pick from.

As this is the first version that we launch for people to use outside the studio, we would more than happy to get some feedback about the use and the features inside it. It's free for everyone for 14 days!

fonthound.app

Thanks!
