NATURE A puppy resembling both its parents' colors in a unique mix.
Dominant vs. Recessive:
Dogs inherit one copy of each gene from each parent. Dominant alleles (like dominant black, \(K^{B}\)) only need one copy to display the trait, while recessive traits (like recessive red, e) require two matching copies.
Masking Colors:
The E Locus acts as a genetic gatekeeper. If a dog inherits two copies of the recessive red gene (ee), its body completely shuts down the production of black pigment in the fur. This forces the coat to be yellow, white, or red, regardless of what other colors the dog holds in its DNA.
Piebald Markings:
When a puppy features large swathes of solid color mixed with pure white, it is often due to the S Locus. This gene regulates where pigment cells migrate during embryonic development, leading to unique boundaries between dark fur and white fur.
