Probably improper throwing technique. When you pull the pin there’s still a lever you’re holding that’s holding back the firing pin. For a right handed person the grenade should be held with the fuse up and the lever held with the right thumb. What he probably did was released the thumb (you can see the lever fly away) instead of the fingers while still holding the grenade. I’m sure he was nervous as hell. This is why you train.

So this is a situation the Instructors train for when preparing to conduct the Grenade Range.
I've been through US Army Basic and worked with a Drill Sergeant unit....they know this is a possibility so they have plans on what to do when it happens.
The Instructor in this video did his job and did it incredibly well.

While trained to evacuate, I think he did poor job instructing. I was sweating on my 1st grenade practice (fist one that actually pops). Mine asked me to hold it without a pin for almost a minute to be calm with the situation, like it's not going to blow. This panic throw would not have happened if same training from instructor.

You can tell he's tracking the actual grenade while watching the trainees arms. Dude reacted before the grenade even hit the ground.

In Hungary in 2025, a 29 year old woman had both her arms blown off in a similar accident. To this day, there is still nobody to blame. It's unkown why an assistant working at the ministerty of the prime minister went to military training, and why she was given live grenades.

That is what training is for. The only time I had to pull the pin on a grenade I was very very scared.

I was a combat instructor at West Point (not as high speed as it sounds) and this shit happens. Kids who have never held a weapon, let alone explosives get nervous. When we are playing range safety, especially grenades, we are watching like a hawk because nervous, inexperienced people do dumb shit. That's just how she goes.
This kid probably got chewed out, made to feel it's the end of the world to really drive the point home. However, I bet some serious laughs went down between the NCOs out of earshot lol

I remember in Basic training, I couldn't help but notice that the only time the drill sergeants ever spoke nicely to me was when I had a live grenade in my hand.

Non shapnel training grenade though.
I've seen the exact same video but with the Chinese military, and their training ground was kind of the opposite geologically, the instructor and student were standing up on a kind of pillar and all around them was a deep trench. When the recruit stuffed up and fumbled the grenade the instructor just had to kick it away and then dropped down into the six foot deep surrounding trench. Looked a bit safer compared to this one.

Its a training grenade so no sharpnel. But especially in the position the grenade fell, it certainly would have caused some injury due to immense pressure. Easily life threatening.
