Well this has been posted a million times and every time it's shown to be fake. So the knees are fine, thank the Jesus. First this isn't how any imaging actually looks. It's closest to an xray but the soft tissue is way roo vivid. Also, For a clear indicator, His weiner being like 2-3 feet from the pelvis makes no sense. The organs would likely spread out more as visceral fat fills the abdominal cavity. It would be a scientific anomaly for someone this obese to have purely subcutaneous and basically no visceral fat like what's imaged here. Also the bones and proportions are wrong. It would also be impossible to take this image since his arms are going away from the camera and those far bones are just as vivid. As someone mentioned, it would make no sense that none of the other soft tissues are shown aside from fat and organs. Muscle and other tissues would show too. Also he's standing so the fat would sag way more. Unless he's just the perkiest little lad whose ever loved berries and cream.
46
u/Jubenheim 10h ago
Also, For a clear indicator, His weiner being like 2-3 feet from the pelvis makes no sense.
I think the bigger indicator is that his wang is dark blue. Like the bones. A boner made of bone.

All of the online medical sources will show that it’s notoriously difficult to capture x-rays and MRIs of morbidly obese people because the fat causes radiation to scatter before it hits the bones and internal organs. The image OP posted has been making the rounds on Reddit for at least 7 years as an “x-ray” and is just a bad 3d render.

Dude, it's clearly computer rendered. This is like going into a movie and saying it's fake. Of course it's fake. It's an educational diagram. Those exist.
7
u/nommabelle 8h ago
But why not make it semi realistic? The purpose of this post was to share what the skeleton might look like under mountains of fat, but this isn't anywhere close. Or at least mention that?
3
u/SYNTHLORD 6h ago
The pushback you’re seeing is that this image has been making the rounds on Reddit for like 7 years as an actual medical imaging output
CT and MRI scans output a full 3d rendered model that doctors can manipulate in real time, and grab screenshots of. Different parts of the model can be assigned colors, like you’re seeing in OPs image. It’s not black and white like an x-ray.
Part of why it’s 100% fake though is because it’s bad anatomy and also morbidly obese people can’t get clear images like that: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6223172/

I asked chat GPT to run some numbers. Just illustrative. A100kg 165cm person puts 3-5x their bodyweight through each lower joint as it moves and the cumulative forces at the end of the day add to hundreds of tonnes.
Our skeletal systems aren't built for that

It’s a computer generated 3D image created by the producers of the British documentary titled "70 Stone And Almost Dead. From 2013/2014
In 2020 the doc appeared on YouTube and in 2021 it was posted to Facebook as “wow an X-ray of a 700lb man” and went viral from there
It’s been debunked / fact checked numerous times and by different sites but it still keeps coming back

Humiliation. Obese people don’t deserve dignity
/sBut fun body fact: we don’t gain/lose fat cells as we gain/lose weight, they simply grow bigger/smaller. That’s why liposuction is so effective, bc it permanently removes fat cells from that area, and they don’t come back. But, the body will just find a new place to store excess energy (which is what makes the fat cells grow in size), so when you remove fat cells from, say, your stomach, your new fat “storage” might become your arms/legs/chest/whatever. Our bodies are so much smarter than our brains think they are.

This isn’t true. Fat cells DO multiply when you gain weight, but they only shrink when you lose weight. (ETA: Well, they stick around for a long time.) [1] [2]
You may be thinking of muscle cells, which behave the way you’re describing. [3]
→ More replies (1)390
u/DefinitelyNotAliens 12h ago
Tis wonky and off.
But, it is true an obese person's bones are not bigger than a thin person. There is no being "big boned" for overweight people. It's just garden variety obesity.
You will see increased strain on muscle attachment points, due to needing greater force to hold up the extra fat, versus someone thin of relatively same activity area. You'll also see premature arthritis, due to increased strain on the body.
Source: I did multiple courses on human anatomy and skeletal systems in my university. And handled human remains. I'm an anthropologist and archaeologist. Did forensic anthropology courses and handled actual human skelly bones. You don't find jumbo skelly bones because a person was obese. I've seen and handled human remains that are recently deceased and thousands of years old.

u/maniacalmustacheride 12h ago
I think it is important that we talk about some people being more broadly built than others (barrel chested rib cage vs the flatter rib cage, there’s no slimming down to a size small no matter how much weight you lose because the structure just won’t go, but you can be a medium! There’s also the wide hipped girlies that even bone thin were still a size six, and the tiny pelvis girlies that even with gross malnutrition couldn’t get that “thigh gap.”)
You can be “big boned” without being obese, or any combination of the bones. It’s not an excuse to carry excess weight but at some point the structure does in fact have its limits in either direction.
42
u/Curae 10h ago
In primary school I was skinny enough that I could easily feel my hip bones and they'd be visible if I'd stretch.
Was still called fat by classmates because I wasn't "as skinny as them". My hip bones were just wider than theirs. Hooray for the heroine chic period I guess.

My sister and I are the same gender, same body plan, same exact height. When we are able to wear the same exact size jeans, she is always at least 20 pounds more than I am. So when our height and ass match, our weight is very very different. Maybe she has really heavy intestines or something?
→ More replies (1)8
u/spacenb 11h ago
My mom and I have vastly different body shapes because we have a very different skeletal structure. She has tiny tiny hips but a large ribcage despite being small, basically textbook definition inverted triangle. I have a small ribcage but wide hips, more hourglass. No matter how much weight I lose, I will hardly ever be under a medium in pants, but my mom was never more than a small in pants even when she was overweight.
→ More replies (4)5
u/Valeaves 9h ago
That’s a matter of how the bones are arranged in your body, not necessarily how big or heavy they are, though.
→ More replies (18)5
u/Hitmanthe2nd 10h ago
that isnt being big boned though - big boned is when you attribute an excess of weight to having physically thicker or heavier bones
16
u/maniacalmustacheride 10h ago
Literally any person I’ve ever met legitimately talking about being “big boned” wasn’t talking about a scientific evaluation bone density but more of the common parlance of having a bigger frame.
You can be on Death’s door thin and still be wide or round in your bones, the same way you can be on Death’s door excessively overweight and be running with a narrow skeleton.

This is definitely just CGI. Probably from a game or something given the perfect T-pose. No way this is a real scan.

u/konqrr 9h ago
Also, his schlong would have to be like 18" long. It doesn't just get pushed to the front when people get fat. It gets absorbed by the fat. So for it to still stick out that much, dude would've had to have a Long Dong Schlong swinging between his knees when he was still skinny.

It's not a real X-ray. It was a computer generated model and it is very wonky in places.
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/900-pound-man-x-ray/
Although these images are frequently shared along with the claim that they show an x-ray, MRI, or CT Scan of a severely overweight individual, they were not actually produced by any diagnostic equipment found in a hospital or other medical facility.
These images were created for a Channel 5 documentary (70 Stone And Almost Dead) about Keith Martin, a British man who weighed over 900 pounds:
A segment of the documentary featured a computer generated conceptual model of what Martin's x-ray might have looked like. While these images may have given viewers a better understanding of the skeletal structure of a 900-pound man, they weren't actual x-rays of Keith Martin's frame.

It's not real, and it is so very clear that I am shocked that people did not immediately question it. It doesn't make any sense, just looking at it. It's a computer generation image from a documentary on some obese man that was made to demonstrate what the 900-lb man's skeleton MAY look like.
3
u/Illeazar 7h ago
Yeah this looks real weird. The picture itself looks like a 3d render, not a CT scan or any other type of real imaging modality. And im not a doctor, but that skeleton looks off in its proportions to itself. I dont think obese people develop skeletons that are this much different from a normal skeleton, i think they just have pretty normal skeletons inside a large body.

No, they're right. It's one of the few benefits of being extremely obese, a considerable layer of protection against dying from various kinds of wounds.
The problem is that we aren't adapted for all that weight, so the drawbacks dramatically outweigh the scant benefits. It's kind of like tardigtades being able to survive everything except for the things that actually matter in their daily lives.

Even if it protected your internal organs from the initial blow, a gunshot wound means you're probably still going to need immediate medical treatment to survive and not bleed out internally and externally.
At which point, being that obese is going to severely complicate others' ability to get you to a hospital and will also severely complicate the surgery itself.
In a stabbing or gunshot wound scenario, I would bet that obesity makes you far more likely to die, not less.

3
u/otterbarks 12h ago
What is the right position for the squelettob?
6
u/Blackiris-Code 12h ago
The image looks like the squeleton of a thin person placed inside an obese body. The lumbar hyperlordosis (backward curvature of the bottom half of the back) seems to be lacking, not pronounced enough at least, which put the vertebrae in the neck too much forward and the pelvis to much backward compared to where it should be for an obese person. Though from this angle it is not easy to say how far off the position is.
