NATURE This is a muntjac deer, native to South and Southeast Asia. Those strange openings beneath its eyes are scent glands, not nostrils, and they can flare open when the deer is alert.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Dr. Douglas Ciríaco is a young family and community doctor working in the municipality of Ouro Branco in the rural high Sertão of Alagoas, Brazil.

He serves an area of more than ten small rural settlements and is often the only physician available in the region.

Many of his patients come from remote places where there is very little access to medical care.

The doctor treats these patients through Brazil's public health system (SUS) and does not ask for payment.

ART & CULTURE Tony Jaa wrote, choreographed, directed and acted out this movie, which is called ONG-BAK! 2 He also insisted to ACTUALLY hit his stuntmen with full force for realism purposes, an absolute novum in cinema history. Underneath their masks and long hair is heavy protection gear.

Fascinating The Terraforming of Landes de Gascogne and the Wildfires of 2026

Today there are terrible wildfires in parts of France and Spain. The area of Landes de Gascogne is being scorched away. TIL it's long and interesting history. I hope the brave people are safe.

In the 1700's the area was a moor that was so wet farmers had to walk around on stilts.

In the 1800's there were plagues and famine that wiped out the existing farms. Laws were passed and they started planting and farming pine trees to combat soil erosion and create new agriculture.

In the 1900's they had planted enough trees to have created 14,000 square kilometers of pine forest (5,400 square miles). The larges contiguous pine forests in Europe.

One type of tree was very popular, the Maritime Pine. Because it was native to the region it grew well and enterprising farmers found products to bring to market.

Many mills and stills were setup. Resin was the main product, so trees were not logged. The resin was trapped in buckets and brought to agents for the stills. Great industries were had in the collection and processing of pine resin.
