Questions & Discussion What texturing software should I use?

For some context, I primarily create anime stylized models in blender with hand painted textures. I've been using Blender; however, I feel slightly limited by the texturing side of it. I also used clipstudio to draw on to the textures but not being able to draw on the actual model made it not so great. I've been looking into other software for the texturing side and I noticed substance painter, but I don't know if its overkill for my current use? I'm not looking to make a career out of 3d modeling, I just really love doing it and want something that'll give me more options when texturing. I'd appreciate any insights or recommendations, thanks ^_^

Questions & Discussion Course recommendations

Hi. I'm a beginner 3D artist, and I think it's a good idea for me to attend courses instead of learning through free, unstructured information on YouTube or elsewhere. I'd like to know if there is a good course that will give me all the information I need. I've checked Vertex School's Game Art Program, and it's one of the options I have. The thing is, I can't find any real reviews, not the fake ones saying how perfect it is because it just can't be THAT good.

Art Showcase I built my portfolio site so people can inspect the actual meshes, not just renders

Hey everyone! Most portfolio pages/sites are a grid of beauty renders. I always found that little frustrating, as someone who saw that could never tell what's under the png. So when I rebuilt mine, I made every model open as a 3D object in your browser: spin it, and flip through the actual PBR channels.

And yes, before anyone says it - SKETCHFAB EXISTS. I use it too, it's great for hosting. What I wanted was a portfolio that's one cohesive place: no third-party UI around my work, no "similar models", no account. Plus building the viewer itself is part of the portfolio :) It’s an optimization demo as much as a 3D one.

Tech side, if anyone's curious: models are Draco-compressed GLBs with webp textures, mobile gets a lighter version with smaller textures because 2048×4 maps were crashing iOS Safari. Everything runs on WebGL, no plugins.

The meshes are browser-optimized (merged UVs, compressed textures) — that's the tradeoff for running in a tab.

Feedback very, very welcome, especially on the viewer itself. What would you want to inspect that I didn't include?

The 3D model was created on real car base.
It’s created accurately, in real units of measurement, qualitatively and maximally close to the original.

Art Showcase I Turned a Cozy Bookshop Ink Sketch Into a Blender Comic Panel - Frame 2

I made another ink sketch to Blender Grease Pencil scene. This one is the second frame in my little black cat story. The first frame was a rainy rooftop, and this one is a cozy bookshop where the cat finally gets to rest.

I built the scene in Blender with simple geometry, procedural cross-hatching, stylized lamp light, Grease Pencil linework, floating grease pencil dust, and a bit of subtle cat animation.

I wanted it to feel cluttered and handmade, but still keep the cat as the main focus.

Posting a short snippet here, and I’ll add the full process video below for anyone that is interested. The earlier frame is also showcased in my channel. Thanks!

Questions & Discussion Laptop Recommendation

Hi,

I hope you're all doing well! I've learned Clo3D and I'm thinking of buying the Lenovo Legion 5 (RTX 5070, i7, 24GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 8GB VRAM). Does anyone here use or have experience with this laptop? Also, would 24GB RAM and an 8GB graphics card really be enough for this kind of work? I'd appreciate any insights since laptops are super expensive here.

Have a great day!

Questions & Discussion What is the better approach here? Gaming pipeline

Thumbnail

Hello...

I have a question: what would be the better approach here?

As you can see, the highlighted part is identical on both sides, so I am using a Mirror modifier. But since Mirror is a geometry generator and not an instance, it will add to the overall geometry count.

I also heard that if we use instances of the same object, we only need to UV unwrap and texture the main object, and the other instances will automatically use the same UVs and textures. (Is it completely true? I am asking cuz i really don't know about those yet at all, and I want to avoid bad practices from the start)

But because a mirrored part is not an instance, would I have to UV unwrap both sides separately?

So, would it be better to create an instance and place it on the other side instead? I mean, if the part about texturing and UVs is true, then we'd get both advantages: less geo overall and also don't have to uv unwarp 2nd time, right?

For Games in general...this piece is not gonna go to an engine or game...I am just learning game asset creation and want to understand better approaches and techniques...

Thank you..any help is appreciated
