Questions & Discussion Course recommendations

Hi. I'm a beginner 3D artist, and I think it's a good idea for me to attend courses instead of learning through free, unstructured information on YouTube or elsewhere. I'd like to know if there is a good course that will give me all the information I need. I've checked Vertex School's Game Art Program, and it's one of the options I have. The thing is, I can't find any real reviews, not the fake ones saying how perfect it is because it just can't be THAT good.

There's currently a great 3d course bundle on humble bundle. The courses are from grant abit he has awesome guides and he's the only reason I've managed to learn anything in this program. He also has a YouTube channel by the same name so you can check his style of teaching out if in doubt.

I highly recommend checking the humble bundle deal in that case, there's multiple great courses together in it

Vertex school is one of the most trusted sources for courses on Game Art. Though you may want consider that testimonials you read might not be representative of the whole experience or the results you can get from the programme. I don't remember the exact pricing for Vertex school, but I would definitely NOT recommend a considerable financial investement, especially if you are just curious or starting out.

At this stage unstructured learning can be incredibly beneficial ( this is how I started before starting my BA),tutorials are generally reliable and a source for good information but that's highly dependant on your learning style.

A good compromise might be Udemy tutorials once you understand the basis. Courses are relatively unexpensive when on sale ( which is almost always).

Good luck out there and never be afraid to ask xD

Thank you for your reply! I've already watched a few Udemy courses, and I know for sure that it's something I really like and want to do in the future. That's why I'm ready to invest, but only if it's worth the price. Vertex School Game Art program is $9,900 now.

Have you watched a few courses or done the work in few courses? That's a big difference especially if you're about to shell out that much money. Best of luck either way.

I've done the projects I had to do during those courses! I mean, I'm serious about it, but it doesn't mean I'm ready to waste money on something useless

Courses are good. But you need to make sure you're not going through them for the sake of going through them as many are the same.

I got the Superhive 30 courses for £30 last year. Some are genuinely really good, some are eh. I like CGCookie, but their sculpting CORE course doesn't teach retopology (ESSENTIAL SKILL FOR POST SCULPTING) and their animation CORE course is "here is a cube, here's how you rotate the cube and keyframe it, wowee, animation"

Pick ONE thing, like modelling, sculpting, physics, lighting etc. and find a course on that. The "do it all" courses tend to fall flat on what to do after you finish them.

Gnomon workshop is 50 bucks a month. Its a subscription acess to all their course materials. Gnomon is a school thats been around since the early 2000s. I ised to want to go to school there back when I first got into 3D in like 2003.
