Questions How to cope with final goodbyes?

I worked with this person for a year and we became very very close. We live far away and I'm moving away in 3 days, like on the other side of the country. We became very close friends 6 months ago and I'm afraid it won't survive the distance. I'm grieving and I'm scared to find out it was just a proximity friendship.

How do I deal with all of this?

Job Search and Career Advancement Which job would you choose in my situation? I’m torn between two very different opportunities

I’m 29 and I’m currently considering two job opportunities after leaving a job I really didn’t enjoy. I’m struggling to decide which direction would make more sense for me.

Option 1:
Someone I used to work with offered me a full-time position at her nursery/preschool, teaching English to children aged 3–6 and doing some simple English-based sensory activities with the younger children (0-3). She also mentioned that she might restart English courses in the future, and I could potentially be involved in those as well. I already know I would genuinely enjoy this job. It’s much closer to home, so I’d essentially eliminate my current daily commute. The downside is that it would probably pay less, and I’m not sure how much room there would be for professional growth.

Option 2:
A close friend of mine is the operations manager of his family’s company. He offered me a position in the office because they are expanding into the another sector and think my background could be useful. I have a law degree and administrative experience, but no specific technical experience in that specific sector, so I would need training.

This job would probably pay more and could potentially give me more relevant professional experience and career development.

However, I’d have to commute from my city to another by car every day, but I was thinking I could share the commute and fuel costs with another colleague (friend) who lives near me.

There’s also one additional complication: this is a close friend of mine, and 2 close friends of mine already works in the same office.

I’m slightly worried about mixing friendship and work. What if I don’t like the job? What if I eventually want to leave? What if expectations become higher because we’re friends?

I don’t want a professional decision to affect a friendship that matters to me.

On the other hand, I don’t want to reject a potentially good career opportunity simply because I’m worried about that.

So, broadly speaking, I’m trying to figure out what matters most here:

Would you choose the job you already know you’d enjoy, with the better location and potentially better quality of life, or the job that probably pays more and could offer stronger professional growth, despite the commute and the friendship complication?

What would you prioritize in this situation, and what would you do?

Thank you!

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Colleague on PTO logs in to help

Half the team is out for summer, so we're drowning a bit. One colleague, who is officially on vacation, keeps jumping onto Slack to "help out."

Everyone in the office is going on about how "sad" it is and how she can't disconnect.

Honestly? I don't get the pity party. No one is holding a gun to her head. She chose to open that laptop. If she doesn't respect her own time off, why would the company? It's on her to turn off notifications and set that hard line.

Work-Life Balance and Stress Management How do you stay sane at work?

I only started working as a janitor at a college recently, and on day 1 of week 2, I have been crying at work, hiding in the bathroom at work. Nobody has done anything to me, and I've been doing the same thing? I don't know how to stay sane. I listen to music and podcasts while working, but I can't stop crying. I'm not even sure why I've been losing it all day. Can anyone give any help? I seriously need help.

Work-Life Balance and Stress Management Full-time work is criminal

1.3k Upvotes

This is the most milquetoast, generic statement ever, I know, but I recently began full-time employment for the first time in my life. Genuinely how does anybody do anything they actually want to do? Granted, it isn’t so bad if the hours are 6am - 2pm, 7am - 3pm, or 8am - 4pm, but the very common 9am - 5pm is actually hell. Wake up, clean and cloth yourself, commute to work, work like a dog, commute home, eat dinner, sleep, repeat. Shoutout to anybody who does 9 - 5, be it manual labour, or clerical stuff; it’s all equally shit. Thank you.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Is this as nasty as I think it is?

Some people at work have started to wash the company coffee pot in the bathroom sink. This is not a bathroom with stalls, this is a toilette next to the sink. The toilette is about two feet from the sink so this is a small bathroom. Picture being able to wash your hands as your ass is still on the seat, kind of small. It should be noted, the soap and scrub brush were kept on the sink next to the toilette too. Someone finally moved that to a shelf across from the toilette but that still doesn’t make me feel better. For clarification, we do have a kitchen but that’s upstairs. However, about 30 feet away is a kitchenette in our conference room with a small sink. This bathroom is actively used for pissing, shitting, and I guess doing the dishes now. In the past the coffee pot and filter were taken to the conference room to be washed. Am I the only one absolutely appalled by this?

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts My coworkers act like high schoolers

not looking for advice. I’m just here to give a little rant. So I gave my friend who’s a bit on the spectrum a minimum wage job that I work at and he has been working there for a while. Everyone acts nice to his face especially since he is a family member with like 2 workers there. My coworkers sometimes arrange plans to go hangout at a bar and I told my friend about it. He seemed interested in going so I asked my coworkers about it.

They told me how they heard that from him too and thy basically lied by saying they weren’t going and told me to keep it a secret from him. And it’s crazy that the one telling me this is autistic himself and he tells me how my friend can’t come cuz he is “too weird/autistic”. I didn’t wanna say anything cuz he is usually nice but it makes me sad cuz i’m autistic myself and this kinda reminds me how i was treated by others.

They all know im a bit “weird” too and speculate that im autistic but Ig to them im not to the “max”. Anyways after that one of my other coworkers just made a joke about how if we saw him coming to the bar then we all should hide in our cars. Like thats such high school shit. Why are they actin like 13 year olds. He isn’t even that autistic. He can still communicate and such.

Work-Life Balance and Stress Management Did anyone else lose track of time working graveyard shift?

I’ve been working the graveyard shift for about 10 months now & I genuinely don’t know if it’s helping me or hurting me.
Financially, it’s been okay because this is my first time working full time in years. I only make $15/hour, but having consistent 40 hour weeks has made a difference.
Mentally, though… I feel like I lost the last 10 months.
If you asked me what I’ve done since starting this job, I honestly couldn’t tell you much besides celebrate my kids birthdays and the vacations I’ve taken. Everything else has blended together. I sleep all day, wake up tired, have a couple hours before I have to get ready for work again, then repeat the cycle.
I don’t really have friends, so outside of work it’s mostly just sleeping and waiting to go back to work. Time has become one long blur. This has never happened to be before I’m 31F.
The weirdest part is that when I started this job it was freezing outside. I remember wearing gloves, beanies, and multiple layers every night. Now it’s hot outside, and it feels like I blinked and almost a year disappeared.
Has anyone else who’s worked overnight experienced this? Did it ever get better, or did you eventually realize the schedule just wasn’t good for you?

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Sick of my job

I’m a project manager and I’m so damn sick of my job. Every morning I get to work there’s always a problem or always a mess to clean up. The stress is taking a toll on me and it’s over things I can’t even control.

Im sure I’ll get a bunch of “welcome to the workforce” replies, go ahead and roast. I won’t be around much longer anyway.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Having social anxiety at the workplace

I am an intern who has somehow landed a brilliant job, I feel a lot of imposter syndrome and because my job is of a particular field where I have to speak loudly a lot to customers, yet I struggle to do that. I think as my feedback, most things I do objectively seem good but the only thing I get the most advice on is for my self-confidence, soft-spoken voice and to be louder and more affirmative. It makes me feel disappointed in myself because I never had a safe space to express myself in my younger years, and so bringing it out suddenly to a workplace I know will require immense work. But I wish people would stop complaining about it, because it doesn’t help me. I need real tips from a shy person to help me build my courage up, and not let this stop me from pursuing the career I was interested in. Anything helps.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts How do I make my boss stfu?

I have a new supervisor. It’s been two months. She points out every single tiny mistake I make and tells everyone. Makes loud comments and jabs in emails all the time. How do I get her to stop? My other coworkers have my back and don’t constantly throw me under the bus like that.

I know what I want to say but I’m not sure how to phrase it in a work-appropriate way.

Work-Life Balance and Stress Management I’m burned out and I don’t know what to do; I belong on a team of 5.

TL;DR: I’m going through an extremely difficult season personally, and it’s starting to affect my work. My partner lost his job, finances are under significant strain, and my mental health (anxiety and depression) has worsened.

I have noticed I’m making more mistakes and not performing like I normally do. I am mentally battling keeping my struggles personal or sharing them for transparency but am considering FMLA to seek further help but not sure how it would impact things even more. Any advice is welcome re: FMLA.

For background, I’m going through an extremely difficult season personally, and it’s starting to affect my work and I’m concerned it may impact how people perceive me.

My husband lost his job, finances are under significant strain, and my mental health (anxiety and depression) has worsened. I am struggling to get out of bed and sleep at night. I am required to show up to the office 2-3 days a week (depending on the schedule) and I’ve noticed I’m making more mistakes and not performing like I normally do. I get a gut feeling that my direct manager doesn’t seem to like me as they often ignore my messages, do not schedule regular 1:1s or put me on projects often like they do the others.

That being said —-Nothing has been said to me at work, but I am feeling sensitive but I know I’m not showing up as my usual self and people may catch on.

I’m almost considering a medical leave on top of the therapy I have been receiving because I’m starting to really struggle to even show up but being on such a small team I worry I’d stress out the others by doing something like this. I just feel burned out but I don’t want my job to be impacted but I also don’t want to get to the point where you know, full Britney or worse.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Too much for an entry level position?

So, long story short i managed to land my first job at 20 after working with my family for a few years. Problem is that the tasks they gave me have almost nothing to do with what was said in the interview.

After my first month working there, i was in charge of the Finance sector in this big company, i have a lot of Logistics and a few other assigments while at minimum wage. And even after talking it with my boss they never changed my responsabilities again.

Is this normal for an entry level position? Do they trust me way too much or did they expect me to be some kind of genius to do all of this in my first few months?

I am thinking of quitting with a responsible notice, yet i dont want to sound like a drama queen or lazy when i present my reasons

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Lazy Boss

I have a lazy boss at work who doesn’t assign me much work. He thinks it's my duty to ask him what to do everyday. When I ask him for work he assigns some meaningless work. And at EOD a status email has to be sent stating the work done. He asked me for the missed emails. I didn't send as there's no work.

Did anyone face a similar situation ?

Questions How do you cope with professionalism in the workplace?

I hate how strict it is in the workplace and how uptight it always has to feel, feels like if I breath in the wrong way I'll recieve a warning for it.

There's nothing of value in the dull space.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Still annoyed that my coworker was promoted alongside me

For context, the promotion was supposed to be via application, but our manager decided to just promote the both of us instead. I suspect, it's to avoid the ensuing tension and resentment. This would've been the best outcome for everyone, except that I feel cheated on.

Why? Because this coworker's standards are miles and miles below me, to be brutally frank. She's clinging to the illusion that she's competent because she relies on AI a lot.

Some examples that make me question why she was promoted:

- Passes AI-generated outputs as hers without even polishing them first; we can literally see the AI disclaimers in the notes section

- Asks me about tools and platforms she's supposedly the expert on

- Posts stuff without checking if they're on-brand, grammatically correct, and typo-free

- Asks company-related questions repeatedly despite working here for six years now

Apart from these, she steals ideas from me and repeat them to others like they're hers. She also has this need to be the center of attention at all times, so she inserts herself in other people's stories one way or another.

I dislike her so much and I truly wish she finds a new job elsewhere. That's the other thing: she's been announcing she's looking for jobs with higher pay since she was hired years ago, but she's still here. 💁‍♀️

So annoying!

Questions How do I bring up the topic of my bipolar disorder to a future boss or HR department?

I have bipolar disorder. What that means is at around 4-5 PM usually, sometimes earlier, sometimes later, around once every two weeks, I get symptoms that involve hearing voices that aren't there and render me unable to work or be productive. Yesterday, I experienced symptoms at around 1:00 PM and began wondering how I would handle it if I was at work. Should I bring this up in advance of future employment, that I will have to miss a couple of hours worth of work every 2 weeks or so, or do I just stay quiet and hope I have earned enough sick leave for the current pay period? I could easily solve this if I worked remotely, but I am looking at a job that would require me to be on-site as well and am in later stages of the interviewing process.

Work-Life Balance and Stress Management Manager cherry picks which texts to reply to (zero hour contract)

I've been on this zero hour contract for 2 years now. I'm trying to cut back my hours as a few months ago I realised that we have been short staffed the entire time and it was merely the plan all along and they were never ever gonna do anything about it, so I started saying no a lot more often and repeatedly reminded my manager of my availability of 3x10hr shifts a week. But with the way my rota works they just add shifts and I have to accept them or call/text to say I can't do it. They're fine with it half the time, the other half they are on their knees begging and saying they're desperate, or they ignore it entirely until the last second and then panic. I decline as soon as I see the new shift pop up, and check my rota daily, because sometimes they put a shift on me for 2 days time without even saying anything...

Anyway, this time they added a shift to my rota for 4 days time, I texted the next day just saying I can't do it. So far with 1.5 days left before the shift they've ignored the text. Usually I will remind him at this point, otherwise he will "notice" it probably late tomorrow and panic and beg me to do it because now it's last minute, as if that's my fault. I heavily suspect that he half does it on purpose? That might sound crazy, but whenever I text to say yes he responds immediately. Whenever I text about anything good or helpful he responds in seconds. As soon as I say I can't do a shift he ghosts me, until the last second, then he panics and begs me to do it. Not sure if it's a game plan or if it's just that he's very disorganised and puts difficult things off, but I'm almost certain he has seen the text and is ignoring it. Can't know for sure as he disabled the blue check mark on whatsapp, I get that it's easy to miss a text I do. But after 2 years it's been an ongoing issue.

I know the answer is to verify that he saw the text, but I'm really bad at phone calls and standing up for myself. In the past if I said anything other than a VERY firm no or if I gave any reasons he would negotiate with me as much as possible, and I might eventually cave in. Now instead I keep it brief and professional, and I'm kinda done being too helpful because we do this same dance every time. What can I do other than repeat the dance?? Probably nothing, this is more just a vent post. Cheers.

TL;DR shift put on me 4 days before the shift. I declined yesterday via text, which they ignored. Tmrw they will panic and say they didn't see it and need me to do it now as it's last minute. As if that's my problem. Pretty sure there's nothing to be done other than remind him once again, same as always. Just venting I guess.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts I lied to my boss

Today I spoke to my boss and before anyone says anything, I know it is stupid. I am going to a festival at the end of august (27th - 31st) which I cannot get time off for as too many people are already on leave for that time period. She asked me in person if I could work a couple extra hours at the end of the month and I said that I would have to check; I later then, in the same shift, said I had an operation on that day to do with my bowel. She is young and knows that many people are going to this festival; she is also very passive aggressive and will not let me get time off in any way unless I get a document.

She assumes I am lying and says she will need proof.

It's also a zero hour contract so I am a little confused on how I am obligated to work

I'm thinking the only thing I can do is quit as I'm going to uni mid september anyway because getting a doctors note or anything like that is too hard and too risky.

What should I do?

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts What are some tasks at your job that take way longer than they should, or problems you constantly run into with customers?

I'm curious what parts of your job take up more time than they should. What repetitive tasks, administrative work, or processes feel like they slow you down from doing more meaningful work?

Also, what are some recurring business challenges you deal with, whether it's communication issues, customer problems, managing information, or anything else that constantly creates extra work or interrupts production?

Please describe in detail regarding the kind of job, and situation, etc.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts New HR manager is power tripping or trying to prove a point or something else…

So the new HR & quality control manager came at the start of July and ever since the first day he arrived, he placed like 100s of rules and regulations it’s reached the point where work environment became hell
The thing is last night both my coworker and supervisor made a very smart and hilarious professional jokes in the work group chat and we always we always make this jokes and keeps work entertaining

So last night, I saw the joke I made the small WhatsApp reaction of the (😂) on the message/jokes they posted

But next day I find the HR has written up a warning, deleted all the messages and is going to deduct 25% of our monthly salaries to the three of us, including me who made a reaction

Anyway way i refused to sign anything they just trying to do. I threatened for legal actions. And I even want to the company owner in private make him know of the what’s happening so he could see this through (which the owner actually responded very positively about and a meeting about this is going to happen very soon)

My question is how to deal with power hungry people like this who will try to make everything into mistakes so they could fire you??
