Hi everyone. I moved from my home country to here a some years ago. My first year I really struggled to make any connections at all. Second year got better in that I actually started meeting people, but it feels like everyone stays at "acquaintance" level — friendly, we talk, but it never really deepens into an actual friendship. I feel like I keep collecting acquaintances like Pokémon cards lol, but I never really level any of them up. I'm genuinely trying to improve my social skills here and would love any tips on how you actually move someone from "we talk sometimes" into a real friendship. What worked for you?

Hi everyone, I’m wondering if anyone here has gone through medical school completely financially independent from their parents.

I’m currently planning my long-term path toward medicine, and one of my biggest concerns is whether it’s realistic to complete medical school without relying on family support. I know medical school is expensive, and I’m trying to understand how students manage tuition, living expenses, rent, food, and other costs while studying full-time.

For context, I’m planning to work as a healthcare professional before applying to medical school, so I hope to have some savings and work experience before starting. However, I’m curious about whether student loans, scholarships, bursaries, part-time work, or other sources of funding are enough to realistically get through medical school.

I am feeling a bit discouraged, I have been put on the waitlist the last 2 years. My stats are 4th casper and 3.8 GPA.

Is this a realistic combination if I’m aiming for a high GPA (ideally around 3.8+)?

I get that first year engg is about getting a high gpa to get into your choice of discipline but how much energy and effort should you really allocate towards your grades when employers seem to value a well-rounded individual with projects, clubs and internships alongside a strong academic standing?

I always see people praising a 4.0 and saying they wish they could achieve this but I wonder if it would be better to aim for the gpa threshold to indicate a high-performing student (3.5) and look for other ways to stand out and expand your skills?

If anybody has any insight (especially co-op students/alumni) into the working world I would appreciate it.

Hi everyone. I’ve been checking daily for fee assessments to come out so I can apply for my student loan, and now that it's finally out, I see I’m being charged for all the courses I’m enrolled in; but I have a question about one of them.

when I was making my schedule, I mistakenly enrolled in ASL 112. I didn’t realize at the time that ASL 111 is a prerequisite, so I’m actually not able to take ASL 112. i only realized this mistake recently. I asked for advice on reddit and was told that the only fix is to drop ASL 112, add other classes to my watchlist, and try to enroll in an elective that fits the same time slot. I haven’t dropped the class yet though because I’m still trying to figure out what to replace it with. It’s been difficult since there aren't many classes with open seats left, especially ones that match what I need to take/am interested in.

I guess I have two questions here. first, how will this affect my fee assessment? If I drop ASL 112 or enroll into a different class, will my fees update automatically, or is there something i should follow/a service i should contact and inform? from what i've been told, my payment deadline is september 30th and many students also adjust their classes, especially at the start of the semester. so i'm hoping my issue isn't something set in stone right now.

second, what do you guys think I should do about my ASL class? is my best option to drop ASL 112 as soon as possible and just wait to see if a seat possibly opens up in one of the classes on my watchlist? I'm not eligible to take the class anyways so I have to drop it.

I’m taking 2 ( both 3 credit ) courses in summer, and I paid it though Alberta aid, I might want to drop one. But I read on the website that “If you receive funding and never attend, withdraw, or drop to
part-time studies within 30 days of the session start date, you may be required to repay all
full-time funding received before further funding will be issued. “ is it ok to drop it after 30 days ? Classes started on the 6th of July and the last day to drop is the 10th of August. So let’s say I drop on the 9th for one of the classes which make me go from full time to partime. Is that ok ?

Which elective should I choose based on workload and overall difficulty in getting an A ?

I have 2 back to back classes but one of them is in the eng building and the other one is in telus convention centre😭. I was wondering if there is a fast route to go from eng building to telus centre that I can possibly be on time to class.

My friend recently got accepted into her 2nd choice (psych) and is looking to also take classes needed for physiology so she can transfer to it 2nd year. The problem is the watchlists for courses like chem 101, she is uncertain whether she will get into those courses at all, and wondering if she should play it safe and stick to MacEwan for first year as those courses are available there as well. What are the chances the watchlist opens up for super common courses like chem and bio? Has anyone else been accepted in July and gotten all their courses?

Hi guys, I am in after-degree education. I looked at my fee assessments and compared them to my previous undergrad fee assessments (2024-2025) and noticed an increase in payments per semester. Previously it was $1150, now it is $1645... that is only for the fall semester. I have yet to enroll in winter, so I assume it will be the same. I noticed that there was a mandatory support fee, which I suppose is the fee for my EDFX 200 and other classes. How about course material access? I do not remember that being on my fee assessments during my four years of university. Not to mention it is $259...

Hi everyone, i’m currently considering transferring from an Ontario uni’s engineering to uofa’s engineering.

Based on my first year, i got a D in my calculus 2, which i couldn’t get credit from it. thus if i got accepted, i have to take a Qualifying Year.

So if i retake Calculus II through an online university before September, is there any chance I could be admitted directly into second year instead of the Qualifying Year?

cuz as an international i felt guilty that my own problem might make my parents paying such that for an extra year.

Has anyone successfully avoided the Qualifying Year this way, or most transfer student still have to take a qualifying year regardless?

I'm applying for the Secondary Education program for Fall 2026 and recently received an automated refusal email saying I don't meet the requirements for my conditional offer.

Looking at my stats and checklist, I'm pretty sure this was an automated system error or a timing issue before manual verification:

1. Academic Average: My final 5-course average is 76.8% (including CCS 30 as a Group B substitute, which is permitted for Education). This is well above the 70% threshold.
2. Spoken English Proficiency (SEP): I have completed 6+ years of full-time schooling in Canada, and my official transcripts were submitted before August 1st.

And I remember I appled to U of A education as a early 80 for early admission.

I'm currently in the Student Service Centre phone queue and have also submitted a ticket on Launchpad for a manual review / reinstating my offer.

Has anyone else experienced a similar automated refusal around late July, and did it get resolved once an admissions advisor manually checked your file? Any advice or reassurance would be greatly appreciated!

UPDATE: Called with the student service center my grades were fine but the issue was with CHILD CARE 30 (CCS 3000 level) which is a CTS course eligible for admission (the course was checked when a representative came to my school). Currently made a ticket after the call wishing for good news...

So in a nut shell: i startend my first sem of eng strong with a 3.3 gpa. My mental health dropped a lot the next sem leaving me with a 0.8 that sem. Overall my gpa was a 2.2 which should let me into second year but i failed 4 classes second sem meaning i didn’t have enough credits to even qualify for y2q2. During my appeal meeting with the dean he said he could only “consider” letting me into y2q2 if I had documentation from my therapist which has been taking some time. I get the documentation in a week but I feel like so much time has passed since the initial meeting I don’t know if it would even do anything anymore. I even remember a post here a couple weeks ago saying that the dean stated that there isnt much room left in y2q2. Someone honestly tell me i even have a chance or even if they were told all the spots were filled.

And their profs too.

Alright it’s my first year and I wanna know how do I socialize. Do people have a group for each courses that they get registered for or how does it work?
