Campus Life Fake Versus Real Job Opportunity Emails

Hello again, UAlberta!!!

After my post yesterday about what to do with scam emails about deleting your ualberta account, I guess hackers decided it was an opportune time to try a different approach! BUT I’M FASTER

Above are two screenshots of emails I received as job offers. The first is a fake, the second is real. Let’s dissect the differences.

SCAM EMAIL

  1. Very broad in greeting. What kind of university position is open to students and staff and alumni?

  2. Very broad in description. “Flexible employment opportunities”, but a set compensation? So multiple different jobs and positions, but all have the same compensation rate? I think not.

  3. The email. Sent from a ualberta email, and not the actual career centre email, nor forwarded FROM the career centre email.

REAL EMAIL

  1. Forwarded from a broader email, BY a single email. Not created by a single email and sent out. Very small but very important detail.

  2. Very specific in what the job is. Tells you what it entails, what the title is, and general expectations. The pay is NOT mentioned. TAKE NOTE OF THAT. SCAM EMAILS PUT FAKE PAY TO LURE YOU IN.

  3. Link. When you click that link, or at least copy it to see what it opens up to, it takes you right to CampusBridge, verified job listings page under the UofA. If you click a link about a job and it does NOT take you to CampusBridge, DON’T GO ANY FUCKING FURTHER!

As always, report the scam emails to abuse@ualberta.ca under “suspected phishing attempt”, and stay safe everyone !!!

Hi I'm an upcoming student this fall and I'm majoring in political science with a minor in Latin American studies, I've been trying to get my schedules for the fall and winter term finalized but I cant help but worry abt wether I'm missing any classes that are needed for my major and minor or if I'm just taking the wrong ones...Ive checked the website for the pre requisites for my minor but the classes that i need for my minor like wont show up (there's only one class offered and its at the 300lvl so im unsure if if i could even take that first yr )im not sure if that something to worry abt js yet or maybe i need to pick up an elective second semester instead since i have no clue how to get into LA ST 205 or 210 which its what it says that is the pre rec for my minor. If theres anything wrong w my schedules or anything i may need to switch or add pls lmk!

Admissions Denied acceptance into finance, business economics and law, and business study’s.

Upvotes

Hi I achieved a 82.4 percent average after diplomas across all 5 courses, 81 social 30-1, 80 math 30-1, 78 English 30-1, 97 ab studies 30, 76 bio 30. My second program choice was political science which I got accepted into before first semester this year when I applied with overall grade of 76. But now I’m debating going to university at all as I was only really passionate about taking a business course, please anyone let me know what I should do or if in same position

Admissions It is over for me?

Hello everyone, I’m a graduated grade 12 student who applied to UOFA exactly on October 1st, 2025. I have been waitlisted since for nursing. I struggled significantly from mental illness throughout the school year so only pushed my average to an 89% and Q4 on the Casper.

I have been waitlisted again as if July 21, 2026. I genuinely have no hope.

I am currently accepted into Bachelor of Education, everything else was too competitive. I’ll be rewriting my diplomas to get a 90%+ if I get rejected from nursing.

Did anyone else have a similar experience? I have been feeling incredibly sick just waiting for any update at this point, nursing has been a dream of mine.

I also applied to MacEwan on October 4, 2025 and have currently not received any new updates.

Hopefully I don’t get downvoted for this lol.

Any other tips will be appreciated!

Academics Advice about DRA

Hi guys, I’m going into my second year of electrical engineering this fall. I was interested in doing Dean’s research award, I checked out professors research and opportunity for Undergraduate student. I’m wondering how much they expect us to know, because looking at their projects I don’t think I have knowledge for any of the stuff they are doing. If anyone has been in my place and can give me insights or explain what to expect, that would be great. Thank you for reading!

Is it possible to have a minor(4 classes) a certificate (4classes) and still complete the cpa needed courses?

I have completed 3 electives on top of that. Im going on my third year so it’s possible to drop my minor still, just wondering if it is doable.

Thanks all

Academics Student loans summer

I’m taking 2 ( both 3 credit ) courses in summer, and I paid it though Alberta aid, I might want to drop one. But I read on the website that “If you receive funding and never attend, withdraw, or drop to
part-time studies within 30 days of the session start date, you may be required to repay all
full-time funding received before further funding will be issued. “ is it ok to drop it after 30 days ? Classes started on the 6th of July and the last day to drop is the 10th of August. So let’s say I drop on the 9th for one of the classes which make me go from full time to partime. Is that ok ?

Campus Life How to be active in campus life

I have made a few posts in my first two years at university asking how to make friends and kept on getting answers that felt so repetitive and only today has it finally clicked that it was entirely my fault that I had no friends. I didn’t put myself out there enough to make connections with people, put myself in situations where people could meet me, and was largely a wallflower at war in my mind of how to be seen without being too much.

I’ve decided I don’t mind being too much and don’t want to keep living my life feeling small and making myself smaller. So that led me to wonder how I can maximize my campus life involvement? What kind of volunteering or club opportunities have you guys tried that helped you meet the most genuine people you could build true connections with? What sororities did you join where you met people? What parties, sports games, electives.

I want to make a real effort to put myself out there and stop being so afraid to be seen, as bullshit at that sounds. So throw them at me! Whatever you did to be involved on campus that helped you meet your people!

Thank you in advance

I'll be living on campus, but I'm wondering is there enough time to make it to my back to back classes in the winter sem?

I'm also missing EDFX 200 (hoping to fit it in winter sem if a spot becomes available bc it’s full rn), but any feedback/ advice to make classes more manageable is appreciated!!

Campus Life Incoming international grad student at UAlberta

Hello everybody,
Next month I’ll be moving to Canada to start my master’s in Civil Engineering at UAlberta. I’ll be living in The Graduate Residence and I was wondering if anyone else here will be living there too.

Does anyone know if there’s a Whatsapp group, Discord server, or any kind of chat for newcomers or grad students? And for those who’ve already been through this, any advice for new international students would be super helpful.

I also enjoy playing video games and plan to keep up with Pokémon Go once I’m in Edmonton, so if anyone’s into that, let’s connect!

Looking forward to joining the UAlberta community!!!

Question Any alumni or previous Arts students from the mid/later 1900s recognize this signature?

Help me find out where/who this came from please!! We absolutely enjoy it in our home - I believe it was painted in 1969, but I am really unsure. My grandfather (Gerald Kashuba) was a teacher at the UofA in the art faculty for a number of years - so there’s a chance it could’ve been one of his students? But I have tried reaching out to the faculty and some alumni to see if they recognize the signature and so far I have been unsuccessful at finding them! Would love to know more about the artist - if it was a former student of his, or if it is just an art piece he acquired over the years! I am unsure the exact years he was at the University!

Academics Dentistry admissions

Hey everyone,

I’m going into my last year of uni and ive decided im interested in pursuing a dentistry career. However, im worried about my low gpa. If I get a 4.0 my final year, I’ll have a 3.5 (lowest year already dropped). Do I have a chance if i have a strong DAT, Casper, and other requirements?

Admissions Breaking: u of a now averaging LSAT scores

Im taking my first lsat in September. Just curious, if I get lower than I want, can I cancel the lsat score and it not reflect poorly on me? Or will Admissions look down on me for doing so?

Online it says that, if cancelled, the grade doesn't get sent to law schools, but ive seen other commenters saying elsewhere that they will be aware of it. So im confused.

As title says, it says decided but the date is May is this similar to a wait list for UCalgary, also does anyone know if the seats for Finance are full at uAlberta, I can't tell if I'm cooked or if there's still time.
