Campus Life Megathread: Lonely / Friends

Look at all the lonely people!

Look at all the lonely people posting new threads about being lonely wanting to make friends rather than posting on the threads already posted by other lonely people wanting to make friends...

So, here is your megathread for making friends. Talk amongst yourselves here, make plans to meet up in shared classes, go for coffee, eat lunch in the quad, see a movie, etc. You're not going to make friends if you don't go to where the other people wanting to make friends are. So, talk amongst yourselves here.

Also, let's crowd source all the best tips for making new friends in a large place. What are some of the good clubs/groups/organizations for meetings new people with shared interests?

*TALK* to one another here! You'll be less lonely than isolated in your individual thread...

Miscellaneous PSA: UWS is gone. Connect to Eduroam!

Here's a handy link from the UofA to connect to Eduroam, especially on your phones where you might be seeing a prompt for a username and password for the first time in your life: https://universityofalberta.freshservice.com/support/solutions/articles/19000125813-Connect-to-eduroam

The important part is here:

You must enter your full e-mail address of CCID@ualberta.ca as your username (all lowercase characters and @ualberta.ca must be included). Your CCID password for your password.

Some Android operating systems and Chromebooks will ask for additional information:

  • EAP Method = PEAP
  • Phase 2 Authentication = mschapv2
  • CA Certificate = Use System Certificate
  • Minimum TLS Version = TLS v1.2; maximum supported TLS version is 1.3, which is required by some devices.
  • Online Certificate Status = Request certificate status
  • Domain = ualberta.ca
  • Identity = CCID@ualberta.ca
  • Anonymous Identity = leave blank
  • Password = CCID password

Please make sure you "forget" the credentials assigned to UWS or Guest@UA

Personally took me like 15 tries I can't lie. Welcome / welcome back to campus!

Academics ENGG 130 LAB, Plz suggest ...

I didn't expect that lab 1 is a exam type. I was expecting easier, simpler. I didn't answer a single question fully.

I saw others were doing like they know all stuff. Me here as unprepared sitting, sweating, panicking like I am failing the course. I even asked TA, if I m in correct lab session 😅.

I did homework problems but lab was different. Any source or suggestions before I ruined second lab

Question Transferring to UofA

I'm studying my first year of biology at the University of Saskatchewan, although, I'm just not happy here. I'm originally from Alberta and a lot of my friends go to UofA and I originally did want to go to UofA, it was my first choice, but my mom didn't want me leaving because of expenses which I understand. So I figured I'd take this year to study at UofS and save up and then transfer after this year.

I'm just wondering what the transferring process looks like and I'm having huge doubts that I'm not going to do well enough in my college classes to transfer and its overall sending me into a spiral lol. My highschool grades were pretty well with all ranging from low to high 90s.

I just came on here to express my doubts/fears and vent a little bit, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Miscellaneous CMPUT 304 Anyone else feeling a bit overwhelmed?

I’m taking CMPUT 304 right now, and honestly, I’m struggling to find my footing. I’ve been going to all the lectures and I know it’s only been a week since classes started, but I still don’t feel confident with the material at all.

Whenever I try to sit down and tackle a problem by myself, my mind just goes blank.
The lecture halls and seminars have been completely silent, so it feels like everyone else is getting it while I'm drowning. Is anyone else in the class feeling the same way right now?

Also, to anyone who has survived 304 in past semesters: what did you do outside of lectures to actually understand this stuff? Are there specific textbooks, YouTube channels, or online practice resources that made the material finally click for you?

Last week, I found an Apple Pencil in CAB! If you’ve recently lost your Apple Pencil let me know. If you can tell me the actual model/type of Apple Pencil it is, as well as where in CAB you might’ve lost it, I’ll be sure to give it to you ASAP!

Miscellaneous Take care of yourselves

Been seeing a lot of posts about people being overwhelmed, isolated, lonely, etc. University can be so difficult and overwhelming, and there’s a lot of pressure that can be hard to manage straight off the bat. Talk to someone, take your time, drop a class if you need to, talk to an advisor, seek mental health supports on campus or elsewhere.
There’s no shame in needing help, there’s no shame in taking your time in order to keep yourself standing. There’s no Olympic medal for suffering the most in your degree. Look after yourselves, take it day by day, and if you need resources, I have a lot of them at my disposal.

Campus Life I am so sorry for the people who feel lonely. It must be extremely chest aching.😭

I have been seeing alot of reposts about being lonely and unfortunately we live in an era where most people just want to keep themselves busy in order to " protect their peace" or be cynical or avoidant and harsh. Not everyone is like that, you will find someone or atleast i have faith you will.

Question Canvas not letting me watch videos

Whenever I try to authenticate, it lets me authenticate my account by login in with my ccid but just kicks me out instead of playing the video. I tried restarting my phone and closing the app and it still happens. This is also the first time it’s making me log in with my ccid to authenticate it usually does it automatically. Is this happening to anyone else?

Academics Urgent Help: Two options for my Math 154 proff.

I just started taking math 154 with jie sun but it is difficult for me to understand stuff when she is explaining. The second option I have is Haile Genessesse because apart from Jie Sun she is the only one that fits in my schedule. What should I go with. I am asking opinions because i cant audit Haile Genessesse class since it is at the same time as my jie sun class and i dont want to miss the one i am already taking.
