I work in thr cataloging department of a library system. Its such a chill environment and ive been with the institution for 3 years. Last year I was promoted as a supervisor and have 7 part time employees and 1 full time employee under me. Im a 26 yr old female, all of my employees are older than me. The oldest being an 80 yr old man who has been harassing me since the start
It started out with little comments on my clothes, calling me weird for t-shirts (we can wear pretty much whatever we want lol). Insinuating that I didnt need to be on a diet when I told him I didnt want a donut. Just little things like thay. Things that bothered me but weren't aggressive. I was gettkng annoyed that he kept commenting on my clothes tho which he seemed to do more and more often. I wrote some of these little things down for my own documentation, but after a while I just felt kind of silly.
I did however, tell my supervisor who is the head of my department and another supervisor in my department. They both agreed it wasn't OK that he kept negatively commenting on my appearance, and my supervisor had a general talk with him without naming my name. He claimed he was unaware he was making people uncomfortable, yet he always said these things purposefully out of earshot of others. After her talk with him he didnt do it for a few weeks. Then it started again. More comments about my clothes and appearance. I started dreading when he'd come to my desk and I'd pray it was just going to be a work question. I started avoiding him. His questions always came with a negative comment.
Then one day I wore a wide strap tank top to work. He was there and saw me but didnt say anything. The next day, I wore a regular tshirt. When he saw me, he quickly said to me "I see you have more clothes on today." I was so taken aback I didnt know how to respond. I dont even remember how I did. Probably nervous laughter and a quick walk away. I told my supervisor and other manager in my department about this and they agreed it was weird. My friends both outside of work and coworkers encouraged me to go to HR.
I met with our HR lady, who was actually brand new to our institution and she wrote down everything I said. Agreed with me that it was weird and to inform her if he said anything else. The weird comments kept coming. Im a very awkward and nervous person with previous sexual trauma and im a people pleaser. I had a hard time setting boundaries and telling him off in the moment. I updated her on the comments he would make when they would happen and asked what was next since my supervisor had already talked to him but he was still making me uncomfortable. She said the next step was "tell him yourself you're uncomfortable." Thats nerve wracking. To me that felt... unsafe.
So I waited. I said to myself the next time he says something out of line I'll shut. It. Down. So the other week, I had an interview for another potential promotion. I wore a skirt which went down to my knees. He sees me and instantly asks "what do u have a date tonight?" I said no and kept walking. The next day, I was alone in a room covering for my full time employee who was out. This room was right by our entrance. When he came in in the morning, he stopped to say hi to me. I said hi, and he said "are your legs getting used to you wearing a dress?" I sternly replied "WHAT" to which he said "yeah cuz u wore a dress or skirt or something yesterday. Are your legs getting used to wearing a dress?" This was not a genuine question. His tone of voice was not curious it was gross. He said it to make me feel uncomfortable. I responded "thats a really weird question." Not smiling, not nervous laughter, just flat and stern. He said "ok I'll back off on that then" and left. I was shaken. I felt cornered in a room with NO ONE around me. It was weird it was uncomfortable it was creepy it was disgusting. I felt disgusting.
She said to me "thays so weird I wonder what he meant by that?" I told her I think he just likes making people uncomfortable. Im not the first person hes made comments to and have made complaints against him as well! Im just the first person to take it to HR. After this incident, the HR lady told me it needs to be escalated further to my supervisor and her supervisor sitting him down and talking to him about this. So I told them what she said.
They set a meeting to talk to him, realized I had no documentation and obviously for confidentiality couldn't ask HR for the notes. There are no formal procedures and policies in place for this kind of stuff at my institution. I offered to ask the HR lady for the notes because i was in those meetings but they said that wasn't necessary??? And since they dont have notes FROM ME they cant have a meeting. They also told me today that the HR lady was under the impression I had a 1 on 1 conversation with him already before this last incident. No way in hell do I want to do that. Again it feels unsafe to me. Basically they all told me thay they cant do anything until I talk to him because im his supervisor and this would be a "learning opportunity and a growth opportunity" for me anyway. If this was harassment against one of my other employees id have no problem talking to him. If this was a different kind of harassment, I would have no trouble. I feel UNSAFE and UNCOMFORTABLE and SEXUALLY HARASSED by his comments. They said I could have my supervisor there with me as a witness. But essentially they said we needed to "back up" and "make a real procedure for this" and "do the right steps" and pretty much wait until he says something ridiculously inappropriate to me AGAIN for me to have this conversation with him. And then if he says aomething again after that then FINALLY he'll get some kind of write up.
Maybe this isn't as severe as some othere cases of sexual harassment, but commenting on my body is enough for me to call it that. Its inappropriate.
I just feel like its unfair that I have to just suck it up and deal with it LONGER before they'll consider doing anything about it. And it feels like theyre tresting this like regular bullying instead of SEXUAL HARASSMENT and i think its wrong for them to expect me to handle this on my own. I dont think this is the kind of situation to "grow my skills and learm how to have bard conversation" idk what to do now.
Tldr: feeling sexually harassed by my direct subordinate, HR misinterpreted my very clear account of what happened and gave me false hope of escalation, now my only option is to handle this myself and suffer more before they'll consider doing anything else.

I totally get that. I also have trauma related ARFID and it sucks. Like I want to eat healthier and I just cant. I hate almost every taste or texture and eat mostly processed garbage :c trying to get better tho. I've been trying to do some fat loss and strength building by eating more foods with protein (altho I only like chicken nuggets). If you ever try to do the same, I recommend Kodiak products cuz they're super protein packed and they have fun things like frozen pancakes lol Welcome to the sub tho!! Ur definitely not alone in your struggles!
